WELCOME TO WORSHIP We hope your time here will be a blessing for you. We would like to give you information about the various ministries of the Parish: please ask one of the Welcomers or Sidespersons for a Parish Information Pack. SUNDAYS FOLLOWING PENTECOST We are now in the part of the church’s year known as ‘Ordinary time’, that is time outside of the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. The term comes from the Latin Tempus Per Annum ("time throughout the year"). ‘Ordinary’ doesn’t mean unexceptional or uninteresting, but customary, regular or orderly. Through the season we celebrate the mystery of Christ in all its aspects, and the liturgical colour of green points to our Christian hope and life.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Everliving God, increase in us your gift of faith, that, forsaking sin and all that hinders us, we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    FIRST READING Jeremiah 23: 23-29

A reading from the book of Jeremiah 23 Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off? 24 Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord . 25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ 26 How long? Will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back—those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? 27 They plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for Baal. 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the Lord. 29 Is not my word like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

For the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

PSALM 82 Response: Arise, O God, and judge the earth. 1 God has taken his stand in the council of heaven; in the midst of the gods he gives judgement: 2 ‘How long will you judge unjustly and show such favour to the wicked?

  • 3

3 ‘You were to judge the weak and the orphan; defend the right of the humble and needy; 4 ‘Rescue the weak and the poor; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. ..……………………..Response 5 ‘They have no knowledge or wisdom; they walk on still in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 ‘Therefore I say that though you are gods and all of you children of the Most High, 7 ‘Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals and fall like one of their princes.’ 8 Arise, O God and judge the earth, for it is you that shall take all nations for your possession. ..……………………..Response SECOND READING Hebrews 11: 29– 12: 2

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews

11 29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted to do so they were drowned.30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had received the spies in peace. 32 And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. 35 Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. 36 Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they were killed by the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented—38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. 39 Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better so that they would not, without us, be made perfect. 12 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

For the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

    GOSPEL Luke 12: 49-59

The Lord be with you And also with you

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, chapter 12, beginning at the 49th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 49 ‘I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism with which to be baptised, and what stress I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 52 From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; 53 they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’ 54 He also said to the crowds, ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, “It is going to rain”; and so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, “There will be scorching heat”; and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 ‘And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. 59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Charity of the Month - School Chaplaincy

School chaplains support young people in one of today’s most high pressure environments – the schoolyard. SU QLD chaplains provide a safe, positive influence for our children. SU QLD chaplains, or ‘chappies’, are trusted, trained individuals who work in school communities to provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to

students, parents/carers and staff. More than 67% of Queensland state schools have a school chaplain, providing support to more than 400,000 students across the state. School chaplains work in the prevention and support space, helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression and anxiety. They provide a listening ear for children and young people in crisis, and also those who just need a friend. They also run many of programs, activities, and events to foster inclusivity and a positive culture in school communities. In Caloundra, Paul Murray is chaplain at the Caloundra State High School, and Emily Smith is chaplain at the Caloundra State Primary School.

In the Glasshouse area, Mike Turner is the chaplain of Beerwah High & Beerwah Primary Schools. He works full time across the two schools providing emotional and spiritual support to students, staff and families. He will be joining us for the 9am service at Mary MacKillop on Sunday 25 August.

SU QLD support the chaplains by providing training, and some partial funding is provided by the Federally-funded National School Chaplaincy Program. But to keep chappies in the schools providing their essential work in bringing hope to a young generation, local support is needed. Please be part of this by supporting our charity of the month.

More information about SU QLD chaplaincy can be found at: https://www.suqld.org.au/services/chaplaincy/snapshot-2019/

    Pastorally Caring in Your Community

This short course, Pastorally Caring in Your Community (PCiYC), aims to build a foundation to grow churches as supportive communities that will encourage others to join. The course of 4 sessions, each of 3-4 hours, builds participants’ understanding and skills gradually, providing an opportunity for them to use what they have learned in their daily interactions, whether at home, work, school, in the community, at church or at social and sports clubs: everywhere, in fact. This course guides participants in ways of being an open, generously hospitable community where members and visitors are accepted and respected and made most welcome. This course is provided at a minimal cost of $20 to Anglicans.

The first 20 people from our parish who register will receive a subsidized place from fundraising at the recent bring-and-buy at St Andrew’s.

Those who complete the course will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. The Facilitator, Ann Shepperson, was the Pastoral Care Coordinator for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. If you would like to know more about this course, both Rosie Day and June Nicholson have completed it, so please talk to them. The course will run on Wednesdays 4, 11, 25 September and 2 October, 1.30pm-5pm (including tea break) at St Andrew’s. To register, please complete a form available at the back of church and return it to the office.

    Thought for the day

I have just returned from the Northern Region Clergy Conference in Noosa. It was good to have a few days with the other clergy in our region, and June and I were very grateful for the support of the parish that enabled us to both attend. The theme of the conference was ‘Speaking in the Marketplace’, and the speakers encouraged us to explore how to model ‘good conversation’; something that is increasingly hard to find in today’s world. Interestingly, Sam Wells (a vicar from central London) and Scott Stephens (the editor of the ABC’s religion and ethics website) structured their conversation around the different parts of the Eucharist; how we do liturgy together defines who we are as a people. Through sharing Holy Communion we are reminded that God gives us all that we need: St Peter tells us that “His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (1 Peter 2:3) Bishop Jo Wells (Sam’s wife) led us in a series of bible studies on the book of Ruth. For her, the key message is that of ‘hesed’, a Hebrew word meaning loyal love. This describes how God relates to God’s people and how, in turn, Ruth acted towards her mother-in-law Naomi, bringing about transformation for the whole nation. As our final act together, the Archbishop preached at a Eucharist for Mary Mother of our Lord, whose feast-day was today (Thursday 15th August). He shared with us this Orthodox icon of Mary and Jesus. Mary has been described as a type for the church, so here she is shown looking outwards, pointing to her son, not holding him to herself as a more typical mother and child picture would have it. Jesus in turn has his hand raised in blessing. Archbishop Phillip commented that this was a message for us all, to look outwards, into the ‘marketplace’, and point to Jesus.

Rest in Peace ... Margaret (Peggy) Saunders

Peggy Saunders, a former parishioner, passed away peacefully on Monday 5 August. Peggy worshipped at St Andrew’s until about 3-4 years ago. Her funeral was held on Tuesday 13 August at St Mark’s

Clayfield, and her ashes are to be scattered in our Memorial Garden at St Andrew’s at some time in the future.
