THE THEME Figuring out how to live in faith can sometimes create a confusion of copi-ous rules, regulations, practices and

prohibitions. The reality, however, is a rather simple “heart and soul” thing. Loving and re-sponding to God cannot happen apart from loving one’s neighbor with deep compassion. Today’s Gospel reminds us that the neighbor might not be the one we would choose to love. The good Sa-maritan story is a cautionary tale that catches our attention for good reason.

THE READINGS DEUTERONOMY 30:10-14: Moses’ instruc-tion to fully live God’s commandments. COLOSSIANS 1:15-20: A hymn extolling faith rooted in Christ. LUKE 10:25-37: The greatest commandment of all is compassionate love of neighbor.

From Fr. Peter’s Desk 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: As we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, we hear in our First Reading, from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses addressing the peo-ple and letting them know that the Lord’s com-mandments, written in the book of the law, are not far from the people. They are neither abstract statutes nor mysterious decrees that the people would need to search out in the sky or the sea. Their challenge at this moment is to live the word in their daily lives. A challenge we also face. Our Second Reading, from the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians, tells us, in the beautiful, poetic language of the verses from the letter’s opening chapter, that Jesus is the head of the body, the Church. Paul also intimates a comparison be-tween Jesus and Wisdom in the Old Testament. Both were present at creation and all things were created through them. In St. Luke’s Gospel, we hear what has been re-ferred to as the parable of the Good Samaritan. This parable is meant to teach us to equitably ex-tend God’s boundless mercy to everyone. The parable is more than a good thought it is about good actions and should cause us to reflect on how or if we reach out to others in the larger com-munity in our lives. My brothers and sisters in Christ, Jesus’ words call us to extend charity to those we fear but also to understand that they have gifts to offer. In our wounded world, it is imperative that we come to know our neighbors, no matter how distant they are from us. Bless You All, Fr. Peter

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the par-able of the Good Samaritan. The par-

able of the Good Samaritan is used by Jesus to an-swer the question posed by a scholar, “who is my neighbor?” The scholar previously stated that we are to love God with all of our being and love our neighbor as ourselves. Living Stewardship This parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that everyone we come across is our neighbor to serve. This week, help those in need of your help. We may not find a man beaten on the side of the road like the Samaritan did, but we can help a family by donating food or a gift card to your parish out-reach.
