Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 20th Sunday In Ordinary Time: In today’s second reading, St. Paul encourages us not to grow weary or lose heart,

but to persevere in following Jesus. Our willingness to give of ourselves, even in the face of conflict and division, is one way to measure our discipleship.

Reflection on Today’s Readings: FOCUS: The cost of discipleship is exacting and steep, but the benefits are everlasting. How many of us live day-to-day not being aware of what we do or perhaps even who we are. Living a conscious, purposeful life takes a lot of energy and commitment. Jesus came into the world to teach us how to live such a life. He reached out to everyone, even those who were considered outside of the acceptable community life.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today’s reading point to the hazards of being called by God. Jeremiah is thrown into a cistern because he challenged the way of life of the princess of Israel. Paul reminds us that Jesus gave his life in order to fulfill the Father’s will. In the Gospel, Jesus warns us that the way of discipleship is not without cost.

FROM A PARTNER Pax Christi

USA: Reflection on Global Warming - Covenant partner Pax Christi USA recently published Global warming – we better take it seriously by Tony Magliano. Magliano comments that [w]e remain indifferent to the poor relationship we have with creation at our own peril – and of the peril of our children and future generations yet to be born, and notes that of all the serious human caused threats to the natural world, none is more serious, or more urgent than climate change – especially global warming. In view of the climate crisis, Magliano argues that [c]limate change and global warming must be treated as an unfolding emergency. What is needed is bold, comprehensive and quick action from U.S. and world political officials. He concludes by saying that [b]efore it’s too late, let’s begin to follow [God’s] master climate plan, and be responsible stewards of his good creation – for our sake, and the sake of those yet to come. Please visit http://catholicclimatecovenanat.org/ for more info.

“He came to what was His own, and His own people did not accept Him. But to all who received Him, who believed in His name, He gave power to become children of God.” - Jn 1:11-12

AN AMAZING JOURNEY OF FAITH- FOR YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Are you thinking about becoming a Catholic? Do you know someone who might be thinking about becoming a Catholic? Here is the chance to invite that special someone to an informal gathering to share and question whether or not the time is right for them to pursue becoming a Catholic. The process is called RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This is the process through which adults are fully initiated into the Catholic faith community. We become a member of the Catholic faith by truly experiencing the life, the self-understanding, and the activities of the community itself. Please consider experiencing this process or inviting someone to join us for this amazing jour-ney of faith. We begin with an informal gathering on Thurs., Sept. 5th at 7:30 PM. Call Jonette @310-670-2243 or [email protected]

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are His judgments and how unsearchable His ways!

- Romans 11:33

When Love is Shared When love is shared, it multiples

Like violets in Spring And suddenly the world becomes

A many splendored thing. Love always makes us young at heart,

The best that we can be, When we reach out to others

In love and charity. Love comforts and consoles us When sorrows come our way;

Renews our strength and fosters hope When we take time to pray.

When love is shared, we too receive the blessings it affords,

For it plays upon our heartstrings The happiest of chords.

The greatest love the world has known Was shown at Calvary

When God so loved lost sinners that Christ died for you and me!

When love is shared, it changes things And honors God above,

For the greatest gift He gave us Was His redeeming love!

Ministry in Community …

Always keep an-up-to-date photo of your child - One of the most important tools for law enforcement to use in the case of a missing child is an up-to-date, good-quality

photograph. The photograph should be a recent, head-and-shoulders color photograph of the child in which the face is clearly seen. It should be of “school-portrait” quality, and the background should be plain or solid so it does not distract from the subject. When possible, the photograph should be in a digitized form, and available on a compact disk (CD), as opposed to just a hard copy. This minimizes the time necessary to scan, resize, and make color corrects before disseminating it to law enforcement. The photograph should be updated at least every six months for children 6 years of age or younger and then once a year, or when a child's appearance changes. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Fact of Life Catholic Priest Arrested In China

In the early morning of August 7, Fr. Song Wanum, 39, was arrested by 10 police officers in Hebei, China. His diocese is one of the strongholds of Catholic China. For several years the government has launched a campaign to force Hebei priests and bishops to officially register as members of the Patriotic Association, controlled by the Communist Party. Over the past twenty years, at least 20 Catholic priests have been tortured and suffered tremendously. Two underground priests from the Hebei province were arrested several years ago; their fate and the where-abouts of Fr. Wanum remain unknown. AsiaNews.it August 10, 2013

Living Faith for Kids:

“Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin

that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the

leader and perfecter of faith.” - Hebrews 12;1-2 That passage from the Letter of the

Hebrews sounds like a perfect description of the Christian life. The Saints are a cloud of witnesses to how we can be shaped by God’s love if we accept it. We can only throw off the burdens of sin by keeping

our eyes on Jesus. If we let Him, He will make our faith perfect, just like He did for the saints.

Lord Jesus, make me a saint so that I can be a witness of your love to the world.
