PARISH and COMMUNITY EVENTS From the Pastor’s Desk

Greetings,

As I wrote previously, for three weeks I will offer you Pope Francis’ Homily excerpts from the Opening of the Synodal Path.

The following is the third installment... “Finally, discern. Encounter and listening are not ends in themselves, leaving everything just as it was be-fore. On the contrary, whenever we enter into dia-logue, we allow ourselves to be challenged, to advance on a journey. And in the end, we are no longer the same; we are changed. We see this in today’s Gos-pel. Jesus senses that the person before him is a good and religious man, obedient to the command-ments, but he wants to lead him beyond the mere ob-servance of precepts. Through dialogue, he helps him to discern. Jesus encourages that man to look within, in the light of the love that the Lord himself had shown by his gaze (cf. v. 21), and to discern in that light what his heart truly treasures. And in this way to discover that he cannot attain happiness by filling his life with more religious observances, but by emptying himself, selling whatever takes up space in his heart, in order to make room for God.

Here is a valuable lesson also for us. The Synod is a process of spiritual discernment, of ecclesial discern-ment, that unfolds in adoration, in prayer and in dia-logue with the word of God. Today’s second reading tells us that God’s word is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12). That word summons us to discernment and it brings light to that process. It guides the Synod, preventing it from becoming a Church convention, a study group or a political gathering, a parliament, but rather a grace-filled event, a process of healing guided by the Spir-it. In these days, Jesus calls us, as he did the rich man in the Gospel, to empty ourselves, to free ourselves from all that is worldly, including our inward-looking and outworn pastoral models; and to ask ourselves what it is that God wants to say to us in this time. And the direction in which he wants to lead us.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us have a good journey together! May we be pilgrims in love with the Gospel and open to the surprises of the Holy Spirit. Let us not miss out on the grace-filled opportunities born of en-counter, listening and discernment. In the joyful con-viction that, even as we seek the Lord, he always comes with his love to meet us first. “

PRAYER OF THE WEEK The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Reflection question: How can I imitate the Holy Family this week? Collect text from the English translation of The Roman Missal, © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company, Inc.

Family Life Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, the “en-flesh-ment” of God as a human person. In Jesus, God is bodi-ly present in the human story. Today we honor the Holy Family, helping us to see that God is active in daily fami-ly life. God is near at hand, amidst the tensions, joys, and uncertainties of family life. As our Gospel passage describes, even with family miscommunications and with limited understanding of Jesus’ mission, the Holy Family persevered in their life together. Like many fami-ly conflicts, there was no immediate or clear resolution of the issues raised by Jesus and by Mary. God’s inten-tions for the family, and for Jesus, were still unfolding. They continued to stay connected with each other and with God. Within the turbulence of family life, they trust-ed God to actively sustain and guide them into an un-certain future. We are invited to follow their example. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

STEWARDSHIP: TIME, TALENT and TREASURE Stewardship “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 John 3:1)

During this season of giving, let us remember a beauti-ful gift that we have received – being children of God! As God’s children, it’s in our DNA that we share and express our love for others as well. Tell your spouse, children, other family members and friends that you love them, every day! Also, pray for those people that are different than you, those that you may not like or those that go out of their way to annoy you. Your prayers may be the start of a new friend-ship. Thank You To all the wonderful and generous people here at St Alban Roe Parish and School... We at the Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all you do in our charity fundraisers. We recently distribut-ed 400 Coats for Kids to St Anthony and Whole Kids Outreach in Reynolds County. These coats were well received and will help to keep these people a bit warmer this winter. Christmas 2021 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I send my warmest and most sincere greetings at this holy time of the year to all of you, and to all your fami-lies and loved ones!

This past year has been a challenging time for every-one. It has also been a year of great grace. We have witnessed the love and concern of people for one an-other. So many have been willing to make tremendous sacrifices to keep people safe, and try and curb this global health crisis. We have much to be grateful for as we move a step closer to the end of the pandemic. Now is the time for Catholics to step forward, giving generously to help those in need.

Each year, the people of the archdiocese are asked to make a special gift on Christmas Day to support our seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. These men are responding to Christ's call to follow Him as they discern a vocation to the holy priesthood, and have dedicated themselves to living, growing, and serving in His love as they prepare for a life of parish ministry. God-willing, these men will bring the faith giv-en to us by Christ 2,000 years ago to future genera-tions.

This Christmas, I ask you to pray for vocations and for all our priests and seminarians. I also ask you to be generous in your donation to the Christmas collection at your parish, which helps ensure that our seminari-ans receive the education and formation they need to grow closer to Christ each day. Your support is a source of inspiration for the seminarians and helps to build up the Church in St. Louis. Together, we can en-courage our future priests to walk the path of holiness as they seek to configure their hearts to the Heart of Jesus Christ.

I look forward to celebrating the joy of the Christmas season with all of the faithful of the Archdiocese. How wonderful it is to have the faithful back in church to celebrate Christ's birth. Please be assured of my pray-ers for you during the season of Christmas. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski Archbishop of St. Louis
