The Spirit moves as the Spirit so desires. Giving a cup of cold water

is a simple gesture,

perhaps a response to the Spirit.

Jesus recognizes

the value of such an act

in regard to the least

of his brothers and sisters

as done to himself.

James calls us to reach out

in justice to those

regarded as important

by the Lord of Hosts. What about those

who do good for justice

or in charity

but do not claim to belong to Christ?

We best leave them to God’s judgment

while not restraining them

from their good works.

We will find companions on our journey

who identify with sources of inspiration

different from ours.

We are not to hesitate

to collaborate with them,

whether they be Muslim, Hindu

or even agnostic or atheist.

Figuring out who gets credit for justice

or charity is not in the disciple’ job description.

According to St. Paul

Christ, because of his death

and victory over death,

is found in all things.

As we stand around the Eucharistic table

we present ourselves

to be offered

to the work of the Spirit

in the Paschal Mystery.

In our daily existence

we can share the Spirit with anyone

as the Spirit wishes.

BUILDING & GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

October Work Day Last March, 70 parishioners helped make St. Patrick church a warmer and more comfortable home for all by painting, scrubbing, fixing, digging and so much more on our first parishioner all day work day.

October 20th, 2018 Two Shifts:

8-12 and 1 – 4:30 Brats and Beverages

served at noon for both shifts On Saturday October 20th, we will have our second all parishioner work day, by engag-ing two shifts of workers, with the first starting at 8 AM and going until noon. We will feed both shifts from 12 - 1, and the second crew will work from 1-4:30 or so. Projects will include power washing the front of the church, repairing concrete steps, landscap-ing projects, inside painting in the upstairs level of the church and about 50 more pro-jects. What would normally cost us tens of thousands of dollars to have repaired, will only cost us about $2K in supplies. We would love to see you helping out!

Organ Update We are about 90% finished.

As we mentioned last week, we are very grateful for the parishioners, and Dr. Kelly Kramer, who have volunteered many hours in the “bucket bri-gade” duties … carefully handing pipes out of the organ, setting them on tables, cleaning them, then carefully handing them back in, while Tom places them in order. In addition to the cleaning, each of the pipes had to be repaired, then tuned and regulated (making sure each pipe plays at the proper volume) by Tom. The SWELL Divi-sion, worked on during this visit from Tom, is enclosed in a large mahogany cabinet well be-hind the pipes you can see at the front of the or-gan, and behind the pipes of the Great Division. It is such a privilege to watch Tom work, and to be able to include so many parishioners in the pro-cess. It gives such a greater understanding of what’s involved in both the playing, and the res-toration, of the organ.

The Blessing of the Animals Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

Church Park Our pets are a blessing to us, and now it is time that we bless our pets! In remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, we wel-come you to join us for our Blessing of the Animals ceremo-ny at 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 4. This brief blessing ceremony will be held at Robert R. Church Park at the corner of Doctor MLK Jr. Ave and 4th Ave across the street from FedEx Forum. Msgr. Val Handwerker and Deacon Eugene Champion from St. Patrick Catho-lic Church will conduct the blessing on all of our pets! The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Share your love, and bring your lovely companion for their special blessing! Limited St. Francis medals and prayer cards will be given out to the animal’s owners.

years working in this min-istry. For background on Sr. Luisa and her years of service in this ministry, see the link below. She is too fragile to travel now but she has kindly accepted our request to speak via Skype. This is going to be a

special night and if you know anyone who may benefit from learning more about transgender persons and especially hearing from Sr. Luisa and the personal reflections of a young transgender Catholic who grew up in our Memphis Diocese, please be sure to invite them. This will be an op-portunity for anyone working with teens and young adults, parents, family members and any-one wanting to better understand transgender is-sues; especially from a Catholic perspective.

Dorothy Day House Christmas Fundraiser

The Dorothy Day House (DDH) provides temporary housing and support services for homeless families in Memphis, Tennessee. Working with other local agencies, staff members and volunteers provide fami-lies in need with a safe environment and the means to re-establish their independence.

Since the DDH opened in May 2006, we have had 60 resident families. In addition, we have helped nu-merous homeless families for whom we have not had space at the DDH with emergency needs, food, furniture, clothing, household supplies, etc. Most families have become homeless because of trauma (e.g., fire, violence, death of a wage earner) or unemployment/under-employment. Some come from families who have lived in poverty for many generations.

In the spirit of Dorothy Day, the House relies on a people-helping-people model to provide transitional housing for ordinary families who have simply hit a rough spot in life. We help them over that rough spot by utilizing the talents of hundreds of volunteers to serve them in whatever way we can. Our phi-losophy is based on Dorothy Day’s dictum, “The mystery of the poor is this: They are Jesus and what you do for them you do for Him.”

The Dorothy Day House depends primarily on monetary and in-kind donations from private donors and organizations. While we are not officially associated with any church or denomination, we are root-ed in the Christian Gospels, just as Dorothy Day was.

After all Masses October 14, the Dorothy Day House will be taking pre-orders for Christmas wreaths and garlands as a fund-raiser for their ministry to home-less families. They will have multiple options available. You will be able to or-der items for yourself or order gifts with the direct delivery op-tion, which is a wonderful way to buy wreaths for family members or friends, especially those who do not live in the Memphis area.
