Authorities have vowed to start immediately working to rebuild trust with communities aected by Octobers devastating Lanceeld- Cobaw bushre but the initial reaction from residents is that its going to take time.
Some people rolled their eyes and others mouthed blah-blah-blah as ndings of the independent investigation into the escaped planned burn were released to the public during a lengthy meeting on ursday morning.
About 200 people packed Lanceelds Mechanics Institute, and while there was little of the anger that characterised previous gatherings, there was a denite sense of scepticism.
e state government has promised to implement all 22 of the inquirys recommendations, including improving previously passive communication processes in the lead-up to all planned burns.
Many residents were pleased when Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning secretary Adam Fennessy apologised for the handling of the 266-hectare Cobaw Ranges planned burn ignited on September 30.
e burn broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October 6. Close to 3000 hectares was eventually burnt. Four houses, 25 sheds and thousands of kilometres of fencing was destroyed.

My job is to minimise the threat of bushre to your community. e Lanceeld-Cobaw burn was meant to do that, but what it did was put you, your properties, at risk.
e investigation, led by Western Australian re and land management expert Murray Carter and involving community representatives, found the planned burn had been inadequately resourced from the start, and risk assessment was poor.
But the report said stang had not been aected by the AFL grand nal or the public holiday that accompanied it this year.
Environment Minister Lisa Neville conrmed that the approvals process that led to ignition on September 30 basically involved one person.
We should not have a system that allows for that in the rst place, she said.
Residents welcomed the governments acceptance of the inquirys recommendations.
Fire anger simmers
But they continued to apportion some of the blame to Macedon Ranges council, saying that bans on roadside wood collection made the severity of the blaze much worse.
Frosts Road resident Jason Schmidt fears a re that destroyed his house on November 13 may have been a result of embers le by the blaze.
e bylaws are killing us, he said. Until that changes, until they are properly responsible
with the management of roads, it wont change. If people were allowed to go get wood like they used to be, half of the fuel for this re would have been gone already. It would cost the council nothing.
Jimmy Dargan, who lost a cottage and sheds on Burke and Wills Track, agreed.
Talk is ne, but we want action, Mr Dargan said. e roadsides are ridiculous.
East ward councillor Henry McLaughlin said
the council was doing everything it could to improve how roadsides were managed.
Managing roadsides is a complex issue and, as it currently stands, council must follow processes dictated by the government, he said.
We support the governments commitment to working with VicRoads and local governments to improve how roadside vegetation is managed.

A long-time Sunbury cyclist says lives could be saved by the simple extension of a path beside Vineyard Road.
e shared pathway currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the Calder Freeway overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road.
With vehicles trying to enter the freeway
or continue to the overpass, Sunbury Bicycle Users Group member Hector Bugeja said it was a nasty mix.
Youve got trac going onto the freeway, youve got trac behind you, youve got others trying to get in the right lane to go over the bridge, he said. ere is a path on one side, but theres nothing connecting it. Its such a dangerous situation.
Mr Bugeja said there had been many near- misses involving cars, pedestrians or cyclists
It can easily be xed by them connecting that bit of path.
Mr Bugeja has written to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Sunbury MP Josh Bull calling for urgent action.
A spokesman for Mr Bull said the local parliamentarian had inspected the site and shared Mr Bugejas concerns.
He said Mr Bull had spoken with Mr Donnellan and was waiting on a formal response.
Call to extend Sunbury bike path
A group of students from Candlebark School near Romsey were in an area of Paris that was bombed about an hour before the November 13 terror attacks.
e nine year 10s, who were wrapping up a six-week trip to France, returned home safely early last week, having own out of Paris in the hours aer the attacks that killed more than 130 people.
Candlebark principal John Marsden said that, while a little shaken, the teenagers were no worse for wear.
eyd been in one of the areas that was bombed about an hour before the bomb went o, he said. Fortunately, theyd returned to their accommodation before it all happened.
Mr Marsden said it had been a disturbing way to end the tour. ere were sirens going all night and, when they went to the airport the next morning, they said it felt like a city that had been completely traumatised, he said.
Heightened security and detours made the trip to the airport a little harder, but Mr Marsden said the thoughts of the students were with the people they had spent so long interacting with and learning about.
ey were obviously concerned for the people theyd met over there.
And, of course, they really identify with the French way of life and that society.
Mr Marsden said the alternative education school sent at least one group a year o on an overseas trip, with students having previously travelled to China.
Getting to know other cultures is so important, he said. It makes it less and less likely that well have to have global wars while people are communicating with each other face to face.

Encores start with two tracks written by the bands late drummer Steve Prestwich, When e War Is Over and When e War Is Over and When e War Is Over Forever Now, new stickman Charley Drayton sporting a raglan T-shirt emblazoned with his predecessors name. e band rounds out the night with the reggae grooves of Breakfast At Sweethearts and, ttingly, Goodbye (Astrid Goodbye).

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to keep working with police and community services in changing attitudes about domestic violence.
Speaking ahead of White Ribbon Day (November 25), Hume crime prevention ocer Jacqui Newman said the number of people subjected to violence in their own homes remained too high.
Latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows Hume recorded a 3.7 per cent increase in family incidents in the year to July 30, from 2906 to 3014. Macedon Ranges recorded a 6.9 per cent reduction in oences, continuing a recent trend.
We are certainly working very hard with organisations like Sunbury Community Health and there is a great support system in place, Senior Constable Newman said.
e way we deal with it, for both the victim and alleged perpetrator, has certainly changed for the better in the past four or ve years.
Cobaw Community Health sta will hit the streets of the Macedon Ranges on Wednesday, distributing posters and urging business owners and shoppers to take an oath to stand up, speak out and act to prevent violence against women.
People can also decorate a canvas in front of Macedon Ranges Health Centre in Neal Street, Gisborne. e artwork will signify people putting their hands together to say no to family violence.
Tables and individual seats for a White Ribbon charity fundraiser are still available. e event, including a two-course meal and performance by comedian Jean Kittson, will be held at Sunbury Bowling Club from 6.30pm on Friday. Tickets: $55. Details: 0419 101 906

A rousing anthem from Les Miserables will serve as the rallying cry for a peoples climate-change march through the streets of Kyneton this Sunday.
A climate choir has been rehearsing songs, including Do You Hear e People Sing?, as the Macedon Ranges Green Sing?, as the Macedon Ranges Green Sing?Energy Coalition continues its call on the council to commit to becoming carbon- neutral by 2020.
e coalition is also pushing for solar panels to go on all council buildings at an estimated cost of $1 million, and it wants a stand-alone climate change policy for the municipality.
More than 700 people took part in a similar rally last year.
Co-ordinator Rob Bakes is expecting another large crowd for this years rally, which will begin with a picnic at Quarry Reserve at noon before the march at 2pm.
Our happy throng of climate warriors will then make their way up the Piper Street footpath to the Mechanics Reserve, where the main event will be held, Mr Bakes said.
Speakers at the rally will include Environment Victorias Jane Stabb, Mary Crooks from the Victorian Womens Trust, and Victorian Local Government Association president Sebastian Klein.
Hundreds of people will be invited to join in the singing. [e songs] have been rewritten with words that highlight the plight of our planet, Mr Bakes says.

Community groups have welcomed the state governments decision to appoint an independent committee to advise on planning protections for the Macedon Ranges.
e expert panel, announced by Planning Minister Richard Wynne at Gisborne on Wednesday, will give residents, businesses, councils and landholders the chance to have input to proposed changes, and raise concerns.
Mr Wynnes announcement, which fulls an election promise, was greeted by loud applause.
It came aer he referred to the Macedon
welcomed news that the committee will be operating by the end of this year.
Consultation hearings are likely to be held around the end of January, with Mr Wynne saying it was not a matter of whether the government protects the Macedon Ranges but how that protection is shaped.
Action group spokesman Luke Spielvogel said the challenge was to honour the legacy of Statement of Planning Policy 8, a state government planning statement formulated specically for the Ranges, which dened the town and country principles that have shaped the areas character since the 1970s.
Ranges as gods own country and said it was worthy of protection as the states population continues to grow.
Mr Wynne said there had to be a balance between the growth of towns and the need to protect the areas environmental attributes and existing character.
We need to make sure planning controls stay up to date with how Victoria is changing, he said.
We also need planning controls to reect each regions individual needs.

ere has been much talk of the growth challenges we face on the fringes of Melbourne, but it [growth] also presents great opportunities for business, agriculture and employment.
Macedon MP Mary-Anne omas said the committee would help ensure the area was protected from growth and change. I want to reassure our community we will work with them to protect what we love about the region while supporting growth and jobs, she said.
New body upholds gods own
Central Victorias reputation as a premier food, wine and tourism destination has been boosted, with Sunbury and Macedon Ranges operators picking up a swag of trophies at last weeks RACV Victorian Tourism Awards.
Gisborne Peak Winerys eco-cottages secured the silver award for unique accommodation; Isabella at Kyneton took out silver for self-contained accommodation; and Piper Street Food Company won the silver prize for new tourism business.
Sunbury Visitor Information Centre (silver for visitor information services) and Melbourne Airport (gold for outstanding contribution by volunteers) were also recognised.
Piper Street Food Cos Damian Sandercock said the Kyneton business, which late last year opened a cooking school, cafe and bakery as part of a major expansion, is just a part of
the story that central Victoria has to tell. e judges were really impressed with our cooking school and the way were able to talk about the region, Mr Sandercock said.
We operate regular classes that give people genuine knowledge and skills, but we also teach them about local and seasonal produce.
Mr Sandercock said Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourisms ongoing support was crucial to the businesss success.
Tourism is not just about having a big waterslide; its about being able to tell stories about the area.
Whats important to us is that the whole region benets. If its just us, we wont survive.

A shock result in the Macedon Ranges mayoral election has put councillor Graham Hackett in the top role.
Councillors spurned last-term candidate John Letchford, electing Cr Hackett by a vote of 5-4 last Wednesday night.
Cr John Connor, who was later elected deputy, nominated Cr Hackett for the mayoralty, and was supported by Cr Russell
the community and councillors and will take pride in helping council to achieve its vision of a region that has a strong sense of place and community, Cr Hackett said.
Im passionate about achieving great things for the Macedon Ranges; its where I live and work, and I want to enrich and protect that for future generations.
Cr Hackett was deputy mayor in 2013-14. He will be supported by two-time mayor John Connor, who is entering his nal year as
Mowatt, outgoing mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson and Cr Sally Piper.
Cr Letchford, who was expected to be the only candidate for the role, was backed by councillors Roger Jukes, Henry McLaughlin and Ian Ellis.
e selection of Cr Hackett, who was elected in east ward in 2012, means that every mayor during the current council has been a rst-term councillor.
Im looking forward to working closely with
a councillor. Cr Connor said he was excited about the year ahead.
Im looking forward to working with the mayor and my colleagues to achieve a number of important projects and plans during the nal year of our four-year term, he said.
Cr Hackett said Cr Connor had been a monument for him as he learnt the ropes on council. Cr Piper was among those who praised outgoing mayor Cr Anderson for her work during a tough year.
Mayoral choice surprises pundits
Past and present parishioners are being invited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of a Trentham church that is a focal point of the small community. Uniting Church moderator Dan Wootton will attend a service at St Andrews from 2pm this Sunday. Highlands cluster Reverend Jenny Hayes (pictured) says the congregation, started by Presbyterians in 1865, still meets on the second and fourth Sunday of every month. The church remains an important asset for a town like Trentham, she says. The hall is used, not just by the church, but by many other community groups as theres not a lot of public spaces. An ambitious state renewable energy target of 30 per cent by 2020 will help tackle climate change, unleash investment and create jobs in areas like the Macedon Ranges, environment group Friends of the Earth (FoE) has said.
Speaking aer meeting Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne omas and Gisborne-based energy company WestWind last week, FoE spokesman Leigh Ewbank said the Labor government had shown leadership by repealing the worst parts of the former Liberal governments wind farm bans.
e government can build on the positive rst step by setting ambitious targets for 2020 and 2025, he said.
WestWind managing director Tobi Geiger said the company, which came to Gisborne in 2008, employs ve sta, but wants to expand.
It was the original Victorian renewable energy target established by the Bracks government that drew us to Victoria, and we enjoy working in a regional area like the Macedon Ranges, he said. A robust plan to grow Victorias renewable energy sector is something all parties can support.
Ms omas said the government, which has released an energy roadmap ahead of a broader renewables plan expected early next year, wanted to help companies like WestWind get more projects under way.
Renewable energy means jobs, she said.e roadmap includes four priority areas:
establishing renewable energy targets for 2020 and 2025, using the governments electricity purchasing power to help create hundreds of renewable energy jobs, ending discrimination and improving access to the grid for solar customers, and supporting clean energy jobs through a $20 million new energy jobs fund.

A man found guilty of an aggravated burglary in Sunbury involving his estranged wife has had his sentence extended in the Supreme Court of Appeal.
e Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) appealed the six-year sentence handed down to Trevor Barnes, 39, in the County Court, describing it as manifestly inadequate.
e appeal came aer Barnes pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.
Barnes was charged aer entering the unlocked door of a farmhouse at 5am on May 25, 2013 and hitting a man, who he found in the shower with his wife, several times to the head with a jemmy bar.
Barnes also struck his wife on the back, head and legs and kicked her in the face and the chest.
Barnes younger brother Glenn, who was present during the oending, was sentenced to three and a half years aer being found guilty despite not participating in the assaults.
A DPP appeal against the sentence given to Glenn Barnes was dismissed.
Justice Michael Croucher found that the injuries caused to Trevor Barnes estranged wife and her partner were severe.
Barnes was resentenced to eight years with a non-parole period of ve years.

A group of volunteers from Sunbury churches are working together to give anyone whos lonely a little bit of heaven on earth this Christmas. Christmas Day lunch at Sunbury Baptist Church is prepping up to feed 120 people this year. Spokesman Pete Dove says the event, now in its sixth year, attracts a range of people. We have a complete mix we have some families, we have people who have recently lost someone, he says. We also get people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Its not just for people who cant afford Christmas dinner. Mr Dove says the festive season can be one of the hardest times for people whove experienced job or relationship problems, or the death of a loved one. What led to you pursuing a teaching career? One of my year 12 history teachers inspired me. e idea of helping others develop a passion for learning, which Mr Dunne did for me, is something that has stayed with me throughout my career.
Where did you begin your career? I started at a school called Noble Park Secondary College, which became Carwatha College in North Dandenong.
What were your thoughts about Sunbury College when you arrived in 2010?Growing up in Carisbrook, outside of Maryborough, I wanted to be a principal of a school that, while not small, epitomised the things that were good about growing up in a country environment. Sunbury has that feel, even though it is relatively close to the city, and I have not been disappointed. It is a great community and we have great kids here.
What are some of the schools strengths? Its people. Students oen answer the teachers when asked this question. Our major strength is knowing our students, their strengths and areas for improvement, working to provide them with the skills to enter the workforce or further education. We have a culture of high expectations and continual improvement, along with building resilience when things dont go the way you want.
What are some of the challenges?Being a young person today is, I think, incredibly challenging. e rise of social media and the constant desire to belong is creating a
