Veteran Macedon Ranges councillors John Letchford and John Connor appear set to take the reins of the municipality in whats expected to be their last year in local government.

Sources indicate that Cr Letchford is likely to be the only candidate for the top job when this years mayoral election is held on Wednesday evening.

Cr Letchford, who served a term as mayor in 2008-09, said that, if successful, he would push for two-time mayor Cr Connor as his deputy.

We have a number of strategies and plans to get down quickly, in a very tight budget

Top posts for old handsand facing challenges with changes to the Local Government Act and rate capping, Cr Letchford said.

e state government calls it fair. Were calling it idiotic, stupid and ridiculous.

Someone of my ilk and nature has to stand up and be seen to be leading that charge against what is a lack of voice and leadership.

Cr Letchford, who is entering his 17th year on council, said he wanted to lead a team that worked together.

You dont want this continual division creeping into the council chamber, he said.

Cr Letchford said he was also keen to bring community groups around the table with the

council, as long as theyre prepared to meet us halfway.

Outgoing mayor Jennifer Anderson conrmed she had no plans to seek re-election.

Its been a great year, but its time for somebody else to have a go, she said.

Current deputy mayor Russell Mowatt, who hasnt entirely ruled out standing, said it appeared Cr Letchford had the numbers.

I think Jennifers done a fantastic job. Shes very articulate and done very well indeed.

Former mayor Roger Jukes said it would be tting for Cr Letchford to sit in the chair at the end of a pretty impressive local government career.

Hes very much by the book and runs a very good meeting. His knowledge aer 17 years in local government is quite deep. If council gives him the opportunity, its a great way to go out.

Cr Connor, who will have been on council for 10 years at the end of the current term, said he was keen to serve as deputy mayor.

Were going to have to tighten our belt but make sure we get the important stu done, he said.

I think thats where experience will come into play.

Wednesdays special meeting of council will be held at the Gisborne administration centre, starting at 5.30pm.

Mountain group CFA spokesman Mike Dornau welcomed the councils tough stance.

ere are a lot of people who do the right thing, but there are a lot of people who dont, Mr Dornau said. Weve all got to do our bit and keep things clear.

Having attended a presentation made to CFA personnel last ursday night, Mr Dornau said the councils re management team was doing really excellent work.

Hundreds of repeat oenders are among people already put on notice as part of Macedon Ranges councils annual sweep of re-prone areas.

e council is about halfway through inspections of private land and has issued more than 470 re prevention notices. A total of 750 notices were handed out last year.

Council community safety manager Anne- Louise Lindner told Star Weekly close to half of those already warned had received clean-up notices in previous years.

Quite a lot of them appear to be absentee landowners, she said.

Notices are issued for properties deemed to be re hazards. If the notice is not complied with in the specied timeframe, the council will carry out the works and bill the landowner, on top of issuing a $1517 ne.

Ms Lindner urged owners who had received a notice to act quickly.

Preventing res is everyones responsibility and a well maintained property will help reduce the risk of re to our community, including you and your neighbours, she said.

eyve been allocating specic areas to get property owners to cut re breaks so that they become part of the defence system on particular roads. I think thats a great move.

About 1000 kilometres of council-managed roads are due to be slashed over coming weeks as the council steps up its own program.

Mr Dornau said recent cool weather was no reason to be complacent.

It can be hard for people living near the townships to comprehend, but we were out near Ashbourne the other day and up at Mount Macedon on Wednesday you get into the bush and its crackling under your feet.

    Many slack with re preparation

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has been urged to clarify her plans for access to V/Line services in Sunbury.

Speaking in state Parliament last Tuesday, Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said it was time for Ms Allan to conrm or deny that Sunbury commuters caught using country services would be ned $435 from January 1.

Mr Finn said comments made by Ms Allan at a public meeting in Sunbury last month had given some people hope that the mooted train service changes might not occur in their entirety.

I would hate to think that the minister had instilled them with false hope, he said. It is absolutely incumbent on the minister to come clean and tell the people of Sunbury what she has in mind.

As reported by Star Weekly, Star Weekly, Star Weeklyrestrictions barring Sunbury commuters from V/Line trains will not be enforced until next January but passengers are being actively discouraged from getting on board in the meantime.

e changes, prompted by the completion of the Regional Rail Link, aim to reduce overcrowding on Bendigo-bound trains.

e government recently added 10 extra peak-time Metro services a week with the promise of more to come.

But critics say the changes, with access to more than 200 services to be removed, are unfair to Sunbury passengers.

A government spokesman did not respond by deadline.

A small Macedon Ranges vineyard is the toast of the wine world aer winning two trophies at a major international competition.

Tylden-based Pegeric Wines was selected ahead of some of the worlds biggest names in blind tests at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition.

e competition distinguishes itself from many others by judging wines when matched with food.

A dozen classic dishes are nominated from national cuisines, with winemakers entering wines to suit.

With its 2007 pinot noir, Pegeric was recognised for having the worlds best wine with sweet and sour pork, and it had the best wine with steamed garoupa sh (2009 pinot noir).

e winery, which makes only 100 to 200 cases a year, also claimed two second-place nishes, as well medals four gold, four silver and three bronze in the regular competition.

Winemaker Chris Cormack said he was elated with the success of his wines, grown on a single two-hectare vineyard planted in 1991.

My wine just seems to go well with wine and food categories, he said. Ive been told that the judges are generally used to trying French burgundy a lot, so maybe my wines are emulating that more than a lot of other typical Australian wines.

Mr Cormack, who is exploring export opportunities in Asia as a result of the wins, said the high acidity of Macedon Ranges wines meant those with a bit of bottle age tended to fare well.

e regions wines really start to shine when theyre ve to six years old.

Hume council has defended its decision to throw out brightly painted concrete bollards as part of major upgrades to Sunburys OShanassy Street.

A number of people were angered last week when the remains of some of the street art items, painted by residents and community groups in 2014, were spotted in landll.

Some of the colourful bollards depicted key moments in the areas history, including the Sunbury pop festivals of the 1970s.

    Council acting city infrastructure director

bollards could have been saved. She said some residents had rescued bollards from the tip and placed them in their backyards.

ey could have been given to community groups or even sold, she said. Some of them arent badly damaged.

She said the situation should have been handled better.

John Monaghan said the art was completed on the understanding that the bollards would remain in place until the streetscape was upgraded.

e paint on the bollards had worn and it was not possible to excavate the bollards without damaging the artwork, he said.

While we would have liked to relocate the bollards to another location, these concrete cylinders could not be excavated in a manner that le the artwork intact.

A Sunbury resident, who did not want to be named, said that while she understood the councils rationale she believed some of the

People should have been given the option, she said.

Mr Monaghan said the council had taken professional photographs of the art featured on each bollard.

We would welcome any ideas on where these photos could be displayed, he said.

Mr Monaghan said the OShanassy streetscape project, which is almost complete, would encourage outdoor dining and entice more people to visit the precinct.

Footpaths, seating and lighting have all been upgraded, while powerlines have been moved underground.

e opening of a permanent BreastScreen Victoria clinic in Sunbury will undoubtedly save lives, according to a local nurse who underwent a lumpectomy, double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy aer being diagnosed with cancer.

Sunburys Geraldine Wilson said the clinic, which will open in Horne Street in March, would lead to more women getting checked

then is wonderful, but this will be so much better. It will be in front of women they will drive past and see it, and when theyve found something irregular they will go in and do something about it.

e clinic, which will be managed in partnership with Lake Imaging, will be fully digital and feature the latest breast cancer screening technology.

BreastScreen chief executive Vicki Pridmore said regular tests were the best way to detect

more frequently. As reported by Star Weekly, Star Weekly, Star Weeklydata released in August revealed that less than 60 per cent of women aged 50 to 69 in the Sunbury and Macedon electorates were tested by BreastScreen Victoria between 2012 and 2014.

e clinic will replace BreastScreens mobile screening van, which will leave Sunbury in December.

is will be far more accessible, Ms Wilson said. Having the van come in every now and

cancer early, when treatment was likely to be most successful.

Were thrilled to be able to provide this year-round service to the women of the area, who have shown fantastic support through their use of our mobile van, she said.

With 50 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer being aged 50 to 69, authorities recommend that women in this age group be tested at least once every two years.

A group calling on Macedon Ranges council to be decisive and show leadership on climate change is now set to stage a peoples rally through Kyneton, aer handing the council a 3500-signature petition.

e Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition wants the council to commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2020 and is pushing for solar panels to go on all council buildings, at an estimated cost of $1 million.

e group is also seeking a stand-alone climate change policy for the municipality.

Supporters gathered outside Kyneton town hall last Tuesday as the petition was handed in.

e council has previously said emissions reduction targets and solar panel installations would be considered as part of its new environment strategy, but it said the coalitions suggested timeframe was not feasible.

Coalition co-ordinator Rob Bakes said the petition showed residents were sick of talk and wanted action. He said the move to clean energy also made economic sense.

Council could save precious rate revenue by installing panels on its main assets, Mr Bakes said. Even with 100 per cent borrowing and no government grants, the rooop solar project would save the council money from day one [and] be completely paid o within seven years.

Mr Bakes said the council was ideally placed to benet from solar power, with most of its electricity use occurring during the day.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson has agreed to table the petition at the next council meeting, a few days prior to the peoples rally on November 29. People will march from Quarry Reserve to the Mechanics Institute.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has defended the state governments decision to reverse legislation that would have given Sunbury its own council. During question time in Parliament last week, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy demanded to know why the government had scrapped plans for the new council, having earlier acknowledged the matter had been nalised by the former Liberal government.

Why has the minister broken her promise? Mr Guy said, sparking interjections from both sides.

Ms Hutchins said the government was very proud that it had protected residents interests and needs.

We have done the responsible thing, she said.

We appointed transitional auditors of the highest order to go in and have a look at the mess that was le behind by those opposite, who in the dead of night put an order through to allow a split which would see a 14.5 per cent rate increase imposed on the people of Sunbury.

Ms Hutchins maintained the transition audit showed the previous government had messed up the Sunbury out of Hume issue.

Mr Guy has written to the Sunbury Residents Association to guarantee that he will deliver an independent Sunbury under a future Liberal government.

People will be unable to light up in OShanassy Street East, between Station and Brook streets, with the ban extending from shopfronts to the road, including kerbs.

e trial, which aims to strengthen the streets reputation as a premier dining precinct, comes aer Sunbury Business Association and Sunbury Community Health backed a campaign led by traders, including Vic and Carmel Scerri, of Vics Food and Wine.

As reported by Star Weekly, an Star Weekly, an Star Weeklyoverwhelming majority of residents surveyed late last year said they would welcome restrictions.

Mr Scerri said the ban would benet people working, shopping and eating in the streets shops and cafes.

Nobody wants to have someone blowing smoke at them, Mr Scerri said.

Greater investment and increased community awareness are the keys to unlocking a towns business potential, Sunbury Business Association president Michael Osborne says.

Speaking ahead of a Labor Party jobs forum at Sunbury on Monday night, Mr Osborne said business and community leaders needed to work together to stop some of the towns $72 million being spent at major shopping and commercial centres in other areas.

If we can contain some of that and keep it within the community, businesses will be stronger and employ more people, he said. Its self-fullling in a sense.

Mr Osborne said that while there was a general buoyancy around town, retail remained a struggle.

I dont think the economy is as great as its being made out to be, he said.

But a lot of it also comes down to that awareness.

Businesses that really understand what it is they provide, and promote that, are doing okay.

Mr Osborne said streetscape improvements and eorts to turn OShanassy Street into a foodie hub would draw more people to the town centre.

He said the recent arrival of chain stores, such as e Good Guys, and future developments including a Dan Murphys store in Horne Street, were also welcome.

Some people say it might be detrimental, but I think, ultimately, if you want people

to shop here, youve got to give them some choice.

erell be people who want big brands and range, and therell be others who want service.

ey should be able to pick either one and its up to the business owners to determine which market to play in, and tailor their business accordingly.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell slammed the federal government for ignoring Sunbury when handing out $4million in grants for projects under the second round of the Melbournes North Innovation and Investment Fund.

We are seeing extraordinary residential growth in the outer north, but we are not seeing the investment from the federal government that will support jobs in our communities, he said. It has shunned Sunbury and our communities in the Calder corridor.

Mr Mitchell said the area didnt need any more people trying to drive on already congested roads, because they had no choice but to drive south in the morning and north in the aernoon.

What we need is job investment close to the communities that are growing.

    Sunburys push for local spend

I dont think the economy is as great as its being made out to be - Michael Osborne

A simple Google search of volunteering opportunities set a Sunbury teenager on a path to helping orphans in Vietnam or Uganda.

Krystyna Rodic, 16, is looking to raise $2500 so she can support Global Volunteer Networks mission to help community organisations in one of the two countries.

Shes already received a $500 network scholarship and completed preliminary training, as she looks to join the organisations 20,000 volunteers around the world sometime next year.

I was just looking up volunteering stu, because it can be really hard to nd something for people under 18, Krystyna says. I came across GVN and found it really interesting, so

I decided to register to volunteer. Krystynas dedication to helping others isnt something new a couple of years ago the Gisborne Secondary College student shaved her head for a cancer charity.

As a young child, she would collect donations from relatives for impromptu raes to help people less fortunate than herself.

Ive been raised in a good family and had lots of good things happen in my life, Krystyna says.

Ive got so much, Im not going to stop helping people until the world is a better place.

Unfortunately, its one of those diseases you cant get away from, Ms Turner says. Everyone knows someone whos had it .

In a changing world, small businesses continue to be the glue that binds communities like Sunbury together, the team behind the third annual StreetLife festival believes.

is Sundays showcase of small businesses will include 120 stalls, live entertainment, a rock climbing wall and miniature train rides in OShanassy and Brook streets.

Yarn-bombed trees and bright pom-poms created by primary school pupils will add colour to the streets.

Spokeswoman Sharyn Snook says the team of four volunteers behind the festival have worked hard to put on an event designed to increase awareness of local businesses and promote lasting connections.

ats really important these days, spokeswoman Sharyn Snook says.

We all live and work dierently than we used to.

Its really important to have those times to remind ourselves that, even though Sunbury is getting bigger, we need to keep that community spirit, so that when you go down the street, people are always asking you how youre doing, she says. Aer all, thats what we all love.

Ms Snook says despite what many people think, small businesses can oen provide goods and services for less than the major chains.

I have nothing against big shopping centres, but theres a lot you can get here in town and it doesnt have to cost more, she says.

Another thing is that you have people who take an interest in you. Most of them know you, know what your kids are into, and I dont think you get that at many bigger stores. Its that feeling that youre important.

Ms Snook says StreetLife aims to remind people of the benets of buying local where

possible. I would encourage people to think about it, because the more money thats spent in our local community, the more money goes back into it. If each person spent $20 extra a week locally imagine the benet that would bring to the town.

Proceeds from this years festival will go to Sunbury Rotarys community kitchen and Wesley Mission Victoria.

StreetLife is from 10am until 3pm. For more details about the festival phone

A long, agapanthus-edged driveway with tall cypresses and an array of exotics down one side, and a vast velvety lawn on the other makes an enchanting introduction to this property on the northern edge of town.

The place has effortless renement in its DNA. The house is a timeless classic: elegant, subtle and eminently liveable. The graceful gardens on the block of about 1.3 hectares are a beautifully designed mosaic of greens and silver-blues with underplantings of showy rhododendrons,

camellias and cottage blooms, while cypresses shelter and seclude on all sides.

Beyond the front verandah with box-seat garden views, the tiled foyer has a study to the left (with garage access) and, opposite, a large, east-facing lounge-dining room with bay window, feature light ttings and a cast-iron Jetmaster replace set within a cream-painted period-style surround.

The big kitchen, next to tiled meals and carpeted family zones, has magnicent garden views, a stack of American oak cupboards, a two-door pantry, dishwasher,

wall oven and 900-millimetre gas cooktop. The main bedroom (off the foyer) has built-in and walk-in wardrobes, and a huge en suite with a spa, dual vanity basins and an enclosed toilet. Two more bedrooms are down a hallway, as are the immaculate main bathroom; a laundry with enclosed toilet, cupboards and workbench; and a storage room.
