2011’sOrientationwasindeedsomewhatmoreexcitingthanthepreviousyear,nottomentionanalmostcompleterevampintheOrientationprogramme.Forastart,thereweremorepairsofhands,nottheteachersbutthePeerSupportLeaders(PSLs).Aninauguralbatchdancewasalsoheld,tothesongofFireworks(byKatyPerry).Also,SSThas3newcheers,createdbythePSLs.

Thisyear’sorientationtomewasreallyfun.TheOrientationgavemeagoodgraspofmyclassmatespersonalitiesandquirks.MacAt-tackwasalsohighlyusefulformebeingquitethetechnophobebackthen.Thecampwasthemostfunpartastherewereactivitiesthatwerescaryyettaughtmemoreaboutmyselfandmyclassmates,whomIwouldbespendingalotoftimewithwithinthenexttwoyears.

IamgladandgratefulthatIwasgiventhisoppor-tunitytobeaPSLfortheSecondary1studentsasIwasabletomakeuseofthisopportunitytoim-provemyleadershipskillsandcontributemyserv-icetotheschool.Additionally,IwasalsoabletobuildandbondrelationshipsamongtheSecondary1studentsandshowthemtheschool’sculture.

Thisyear’sorientationwasablast!AsaPSL,itwasacompletelydifferentexperience,withtherolesbeingreversed.Ihadneverrealizedwhatthefacilitatorshadtogothroughforustillnow.Itwasn’talwaysfunandgamesforthethemandmuchworkwasdoneandef-fortputinbehindthescenes.Alltheleadershiptrain-ingthatwehadgonethroughwastested.

On2thSeptember2011,SSThelditssecondTeacher’sDayCelebration.Tostartoff,ourprincipal,

MrChuagaveaspeech:The2011Teachers’DayMessage.Studentsgavetheirgiftstotheir

respectiveteachers.Then,allstudentsheldaone-and-a-half-hourclasspartyfortheteachers.

Eachclassdecoratedtheirclassroomsintheirowncreativewaystowelcometheteachers.Food

werebroughtinbystudentsforboththemandtheteacherstoenjoy.

FollowingthepartywastheTeacher’sDayConcertwherebothSec1andSec2studentscould

featuretheirtalentson-stage.Inaddition,itprovidedaplatformforCCAclubstoshowwhatthey

hadlearned.SST’sWushuclub’sperformanceawedbothteachersandstudentsalikewiththeir

formandswordsmanship.AftertheWushuperformance,someSecondary1studentsperformed

thesong“NeverGiveYouUp”originallybyRickAstleywithcreativedancemovementsandhand

gestures.Followingthat,Secondary2studentandMediaClubchairmanAbusanghiscaptivating

medleyoftwopopularsongs:“PriceTag”byJessieJand“Perfect”byPink.Afterwards,Ming

Yong,aSecondary2student,playedtheamazingsong“WindSong”byJapanesecomposer

KotaroOshio.Then,therewasagameshownamed“Canyouseeit?”hostedbySecondary2

studentsHaoYangandVivek.Weweresupposedtoidentifytheteacherfromviewingapicture

showingapartofhis/heranatomy.SometeachersshownintheshowwasMrNg,MrJohari,Mr

Yeo,MsSeah,MrInghamandMrLam.Forexample,alowerpartoftheMrLam’sfacewasshown.

MrYeo’searwasshowntoo.Afterthisentertaininggameshow,therewasaengagingguitar

performancebysomeSecondary1and2boys.Theyplayedsongsfromthe1960’stoearly90’s

andteacherswereallowedtoguessthenameofthesongsplayed.OurSSTshowchoirgroup

performedainterestingsonganddanceitemofthesong“HeySoulSister”byTrain.

ThisTeachers’dayeventallowedustoappreciateourpassionateteacherswhohaveputinalotof

effortintothiseventandhavealotoffunatthesametime.

Onthe21stofJuly2011,TheSchoolofScienceandTechnology(SST)conductedaRacialHarmonyDayBazaarwhichwastoallowstudentstoapplyskillslearntinInnovationandEntrepreneurship(I&E)lessonsaswellastoraisefundsforcharity.TheSecondary2students,allwhomareveteransof2010’sI&EBazaarhadtoworkwithinabudgetof$80.

ThestallsoftheSecondary1studentsconsistedmainlyofgamesstalls.Therangeofdiversityofthesestallscametoincludenoveltygames,NerfgunshootingcompetitionsandS1-05hadastallwhereonehadtothrowwater-soakedspongesatavolunteer.

ThestallsoftheSecondary2classessoldmainlypacketdrinks,instantnoodlesandsmallsnacks.

TheSecondary2ssetuptheirstallsinandaroundthecanteen,whilethestallsfortheSecondary1classesweresetupinlocationsincludingbutnotlimitedtotheBasketballcourt,Ourspaceandtheexhibitionarea.NotableclassesincludeS2-09,whosoldbubbleteaandwasverypopular.Allofthemhadfunduringthebazaar.
