Gateway Architecture ConceptSierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) is developing a Gateway Architecture prototype under NASA’s Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships-2 (NextSTEP-2) Habitat Systems program. Our proposed design supports both crewed and autonomous missions to explore the moon and prepare for longer duration missions such as going to Mars.

Key Highlights: • Significant volume, power & data to support long-duration human habitation • Flexible launch options; compatible with Space Launch System (SLS) or five-meter fairing commercial launch vehicles • Supports missions like lunar sample return to Earth • Utilizes SNC’s Dream Chaser® spacecraft cargo module design to reduce schedule & cost

Gateway Architecture Ground PrototypeSNC developed a full-scale prototype including two major elements of our Gateway Architecture concept - the Large Inflatable Fabric Environment (LIFE) habitat and our proposal for the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE). SNC and NASA will evaluate how crew members could perform mission tasks in the habitat. Core technologies demonstrated include:

• Full-scale Vectran habitat inflation & testing • Air circulation & environmental monitoring • Habitat health monitoring system demonstration • LED interior lighting • SNC’s Astro Garden® system for plant growth demonstration • Crew equipment mock-ups for human factors evaluation

Gateway Architecture Concept ElementsPower & Propulsion Element (PPE) • 72 kW power generation featuring four Aerojet Rocketdyne 13kW advanced electric propulsion system thrusters • Logistics & control module, derived from SNC’s cargo module used under our Commercial Resupply Services 2 Contract (CRS-2) with NASA, provides avionics, Guidance, Navigation & Control (GN&C), pressurized volume for cargo delivery & habitable volume • Two PPEs included in architecture to increase power & propulsion capabilities & for redundancy

Large Inflatable Fabric Environment (LIFE) Habitat • Inflatable habitat provides significant pressurized volume for long-duration human activity • Minimal mass & volume for ecient packaging in five-meter fairing on commercial launch vehicle • Inner core contains life support systems & provides passage through element • Mid-deck includes crew workstations, a medical research & sick bay, a science glovebox & significant space for payloads & cargo storage • Upper deck features accommodations for crew members like sleeping quarters, dedicated hygiene station & galley
