CourseDescription
ThisisthefirstofthetwocoursesthatprovideanoverviewofGeographicInformationScience(GIScience)andcoversthetheoreticalfoundations,datamodelsandanalyticalmethodsusedforGIScience.Thecourseaimstoprovidestudentswiththeknowledgeandskillsnecessarytomanageandanalyzegeospatialdata.Asthesecondorthirdcourseinafour-coursesequenceaboutgeographicinformation,thisparticularcourseseekstoelucidatehowspatialanalyticsprovideagatewaytothenaturalandsocialsciencesviatheirabilitytosolvemanyofthesocietalandenvironmentalproblemswefaceintoday’sever-changingworld.
Thecourseservesseveralaudiences,givenitsroleasarequiredcourseforB.S.inGeodesign,B.S.inGlobalGeodesignandB.S.inHumanSecurityandGeospatialIntelligence,theMinorsinGISandSustainabilityScienceandSpatialStudies,aswellasanelectivecourseintheMinorinHumanSecurityandGeospatialIntelligence.Thiscoursewillbeofferedinahybridformat.Lectureswillbestreamedforremoteaccessatthebeginningofthesemesterandwillbealsoofferedinpersonwhenin-personmeetingsareallowedoncampus.Thelab/discussionsectionswillbeofferedonlinebothsynchronously(discussion)andasynchronously(labs)toprovidestudentssufficientguidanceforlabworkwhilebeingflexibleintermsofwhenthelabworkiscompleted.Studentsmustenrollinthelectureandonelab/discussionsection.
LearningObjectives
Oncompletionofthiscourse,studentsshouldbeableto:
• Describethekeytheoreticalconceptsthatsupportspatialanalytics.• Explainhowweusegeodatabasesandrelatedmethodologiestomodelthecomplex
geographicworldindigitalforms.• Analyzevectorandrasterdatasetsusingrelevantgeospatialtechniquestohelpsolve
socialandenvironmentalproblems.

CourseStructure
Thisisafour-creditcoursecomprisedoflectures(twoperweek)andlab(oneperweek).Thelecturesessionsareorganizedintolearningmodulesthatbuilduponthecoreprinciplesofgeographicinformationscience(GIScience),spatialanalysisandtheuseofvarioussoftwaresystemstosupporttheexplorationofthesetopics.Theweeklylabmeetingsandlabassignmentsaredesignedtodeepenyourunderstandingoftheavailabledatamanagementandgeoprocessingtechniques,broadenyourpracticalexperienceinGIS,andenhanceyourproblem-solvingskillswithintheframeworkofthescientificmethod.Thelecturesandlabsessionsaredesignedtocomplementeachothertoprovideyouwithsoundtheoreticalreasoningandthetechnicalskillstoinvestigatevariousphysicaland/orsocialprocesses.YourweeklylaboratoryreportswillbegradedandreturnedviaBlackboard,andthemid-termandfinalexamswillcoverboththelectureandlaboratorycomponents.Itisrequiredthatyouregisterforboththelectureandonelaboratorysessionforthiscourse.
TechnologicalandCommunicationRequirements
GISsoftwareaccesswillbeprovidedbytheSpatialSciencesInstitute;hence,youdonotneedtoinstallitonyourowncomputer.Instead,everystudentmusthavethefollowingtechnologyrequirements:
• AcomputerwithafastInternetconnection.• Afunctionalwebcamandamicrophoneforusewheneverapresentationormeetingis
scheduled.
Ifastudentdoesnothaveaccesstoanyofthese,pleasespeakwiththeinstructoratthestartofthesemestertoestablishaworkaround.
SSIServerandTechSupport–ThiscourseutilizestheSSIServer,whichisavirtualdesktopgivingaccesstomanydifferentprofessionalsoftwareprograms,andApacheGuacamole,aremotedesktopprogramgivingaccesstocomputingservicesphysicallylocatedintheSSIcomputinglab.Ifyouareunabletoconnecttotheserverorremotedesktop,orexperienceanytypeoftechnicalissues,sendanemailusingyourUSCaccounttoTechSupportatspatial_support@usc.edu,makingsuretocopy(cc)yourinstructorontheemail.Questionspertainingtospecificassignmentsshouldbedirectedtoyourlabinstructor.

In-ClassWork(10%):Agradeforthesemesterwillbeassignedbasedonyourengagementinclassdiscussionandactivities.Studentsareexpectedtocompleteanddiscussassignedreadings,engagewiththelecturematerials,shareanddiscusscourseassignmentsandcompletein-classassignments,amongotherformsofactiveengagement.Studentswillearnfullcreditbyengagingconsistentlythroughouttheentiresemester.
Discussion(15%):Fivediscussions(eachworth3points)relatedtocourseconceptsandreadingswillberequiredthroughoutthecourseperiodviatheDiscussionForumonBlackboard.
LaboratoryReports(40%):Thiscourseincludesalaboratorymeetingeachweektodeveloptechnicalcompetencywithgeospatialsoftwareplatformsandspatialanalytictechniques.Therewillbeatotalof10laboratoryreports(eachworth4points)dueoverthecourseofthesemester.Theweeklylaboratorysessionswillrun1-2hours,asshownintheScheduleofClassesandwillentaildiscussionsofthepreviousandthenextweek’slabassignments.Absencesfromsynchronouslabsessionsmustberequestedandapprovedviaemailsbythelaboratoryinstructorpriortothelabdiscussionsessionyouwillmiss.Excusedabsencesfromlabdiscussionsectionswillbegrantedonlyforvalidreasons;pleasenotifyusofthereasonforyourabsenceinyouremail.
Mid-TermandFinalExams(35%):Themid-termandfinalexamswillcontribute15and20%towardsyourfinalgrades,respectively,andwilluseamixofformatsandcoverbothlecturesandlabs.Studentsareexpectedtotaketheexamsattheindicatedtimes.
