NOTES FROM THE BOARD

Guest Suite: In early December the guest room was spruced up a bit by adding a few pictures, a plant and a towel bar. Lawson and Holmes Inc has volunteered to paint the room in the new year. Donations For Furnishing the Guest Suite: The television set currently in the guest suite is quite old and doesn’t have a remote control. If someone has a flat screen television (preferably a minimum of 20 inches and with a working remote) that is in storage and not being used and is willing to donate it for the guest suite, please contact Terri.

Another artificial plant would also be appreciated.

JANUARY MAINTENANCE

POOL MAINTENANCE: The pool will be shut-down between January 7th to 11th for the acid wash.

FIRE INSPECTION AND DRILL: The monthly fire inspection and the quarterly fire drill will both taking place on January 7th.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all residents of Ward 2 a very happy New Year. I am pleased to invite you to join myself and Mayor Lehman at our Town Hall meeting on January 20th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at City Hall. The Town Hall meeting will include a brief presentation on our vision for an education and innovation campus in downtown Barrie. We will also be able to provide updates on other ward issues and have a question and answer period.

NAUTICA SECURITY

Russell Security personnel provide services to secure the assets of the Corporation and to provide peace of mind for the residents by means of regular patrols, emergency response and providing assistance as required.

A full perimeter patrol is to be conducted circling the entire facility.

A complete floor by floor tour must be conducted on the first patrol shortly after security personnel arrive on site. The patrol should commence on the top floor of each tower, starting with the mechanical area. A proper floor-by-floor patrol is conducted by using the stairwells and criss-crossing down and across each floor. Safety hazards, lights out, and noise problems are to be reported. Patrols thereafter should be on a randomized basis of floors.

All common area doors, garage doors and entrances (common use) must be secure (they do not check entrances of townhouse units).

The underground parking is checked for signs of damage, vandalism or unauthorized activity.

All cars in the visitor parking lot are checked for required parking permits for the current time period.

The party rooms are checked to ensure the facilities are secured at all times when not in use and the kitchen is checked for any safety issues. If the party rooms have been in use, security is responsible for securing them once the functions are completed. The washrooms are also checked for damage.

Regular patrols of the pool and spa area are conducted, including checking the change-rooms before locking them to ensure no one is remaining and also to ensure that the terrace door is locked.

Any inappropriate behaviour that could be dangerous or cause damage is to be reported.

Security personnel are trained in emergency first aid and CPR.

Each tower has its own mechanical room. The patrol looks for any signs of leaks, spills, and hazards from any of the equipment servicing the building. Notification to the Superintendent is required if leaks are found or local alarms are sounding on any equipment. Security should ensure the outside roof door is secured.

If a resident calls regarding a noise disturbance, the security guard shall obtain the details, document the event, and ask if the owner would like a call back after the unit in question has been visited. Security must attend the offending suite, advise the resident that a complaint has been made, and request an immediate reduction in the noise. The security guard shall then contact the complainant and provide an update if so requested. The security guard shall return at a later time to check on the noise level. If further complaints are received, the security guard will advise the complainant to contact the Barrie Police to attend. Security Personnel will contact police if disturbances occur in the common areas.

The security guard is responsible to attend requests for assistance. If any matter requires immediate attention, the superintendent should be notified. Security should not enter any suite unless for fire or flood. If required to enter a suite, security must obtain a witness such as a neighbour or site superintendent.

CHRISTMAS DINNER

The Social Committee held its Annual Christmas dinner on Friday, December 7th with 75 people in attendance. The delicious turkey dinner was catered by Wildwood Catering and the wine was supplied courtesy of the Knowles Woolsey Re/Max group. A social hour in the podium preceded the dinner and many new friendships were made.

ACTIVITIES NOW RUNNING:

Book Club: All book lovers are encouraged to come out and discuss their favourite books on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Perhaps you have found a gem in our library which you would like to share with others. Contact Jean Wright at 705-252-8304.

Coffee Chat: Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. in the Kempenfelt Room. Everyone is welcome.

Euchre, Bid Euchre, and Bridge: Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Kempenfelt Room. Tea and coffee will be served.

Investment Group: The Nautica Investment Group meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month in the Ellen room. New members are welcome. Contact George McKay at 705-767-3754 or e-mail at [email protected]

Movie Nights: Anyone wanting to use the TV in the Ellen Room, please contact the Superintendent to arrange use of the remote control.

Tai Chi: A 10 week course will start in January running Wednesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the Kempenfelt Room. The cost for 10 classes is $50.00.

Yoga: The Yoga group continues to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. The cost for the morning class is $30.00 for 6 classes. If you wish to drop in for a class, the cost is $10.00. For more information, contact Tanya at 705-252-8455.

NEW ACTIVITIES:

Fit For Life: Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. There will be a demonstration class and registration on Monday January 7th, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ellen Room. Cost is $60.00 for 12 classes.

Music By J. “Skip” Chenard At Happy Hour: Friday January 18th in the Kempenfelt Room from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

MISCELLANEOUS:

CHRISTMAS DINNER: Christmas dinner was held on Friday December 7th, 2012 in the Kempenfelt Room.

Seventy five people enjoyed a turkey dinner with trimmings. The Knowles Woolsey Remax group kindly donated wine to serve with our dinner and was very much appreciated.

BULLETIN BOARD: The bulletin board in the podium area is for the sole use of the Social Committee

and their activities.

HAPPY HOUR: The Social Committee will provide snacks at Happy Hour consisting of chips, nuts, pretzels, etc. If anyone wishes to provide hors d’oeuvres, please feel free to do so.

NAUTICA RESIDENTS DIRECTORY: The directory for the Nautica residents has been prepared and distributed. Inclusion in the directory is voluntary and is distributed only to those who have contributed their names and contact information. For further information, please contact the newsletter editor, [email protected]

FUNDS FOR SOCIAL COMMITTEE: Thanks to all the volunteers for their help with managing the bottle returns. Please continue to contribute your Beer, Liquor and Wine bottles in the bins provided. These funds will be used to provide snacks for Happy Hour and to off-set costs for special events. To volunteer for future months, please contact Nancy by e-mail at [email protected] .

The Social Committee will provide gas cards to those who volunteer to return the bottles.

The Staff Report on the above referenced application will be considered by General Committee on January 7th, 2013. The Report can be accessed on the City of Barrie Web site on January 4th, 2013. (www.barrie.ca).

The application before General Committee is to rezone the lands from General Commercial (C4) to Transition Centre Commercial with Special Provisions and a Hold (C2-2)(SP)(H). The rezoning would facilitate the development of a mixed use residential and commercial complex in the form of a 19 storey apartment building (194 units), 2- 5 storey buildings with commercial and office use plus 60 residential units, and 9 townhouse units.

FRIENDS

Why do I have a variety of friends who are all different in character ?

Some of them can even be considered marginal ?

How do I get on with them all ?

I think that each one helps to bring out a "different" part of me...

With one of them I am a polite,

I joke with another friend.

I sit down and talk about serious matters with one of them.

With another I giggle at every silly thing.

I have my wine with one

And dance with another.

I listen to one friend's problems and give advice

Then I listen to another advising me.

They are all like pieces of a jigsaw,

When completed they form a treasure box.

A treasure of friends!

They are my friends who understand me better than myself, who support me through good

days and bad days.

They are like colourful anti-depressants that I take on different days.

Real Age doctors tell us that friends are good for our health.

Dr. Oz calls them Vitamins F (Friends) and counts the benefits of friends to our well being.

I am so happy that I have a stock of Vitamins F!

In summary we should value our friends and keep in touch with them.

We should try to see the funny side of things and laugh together, not forgetting to open

our mouths big to swallow the floating vitamins F !!!!
