GRAHAM KNIGHT’S OFF TO KENYA AGAIN Dear Friends

I have volunteered for another Mission Trip to

Kenya this year. As last year I will pay all the expenses

for the trip but I will once again be raising funds to

help cover the cost of materials for the project.

This year I will be involved in the building of

Nurse's Accommodation at a Maternity Hospital in a

small rural village a few kilometres away from Narok.

Currently the Hospital is used only during the day as it

is in a remote area where it would be dangerous for

nurses to travel to at night. With accommodation for

nurses to live on site the hospital can be open 24 hours

a day.

The hope is that the hospital can be enlarged

to become a general hospital in a few years time.

Mission Direct will continue to send teams of

volunteers to help with the project while ever funding

continues to accumulate.

To Raise Funds I am organising another Curry

Night at Eastern Spice Restaurant, Loughborough on

June 25th but before that I will be doing a Sponsored

Cycle Ride on weekend of June 15th & 16th.

Sponsor Forms and Curry Night tickets will be available

soon.

Thank You,

Graham Knight.

HATHERN’S BIG WEEK Saturday 8th – Saturday 15th June, on THE PARK

THIS IS HATHERN: EXHIBITION AND FILM From Saturday 8th June Hathern Local History Society will be mounting an exhibition in Hathern

Parish Church. This will feature various aspects of the village’s history portrayed in photographs, maps,

articles and artefacts. Much of this information has come to light recently and has never before been

displayed. The exhibition will run every day, when the church is open, up to Saturday 15th June.

On Friday 14th June at 7.30pm we are featuring our big screen film “This is Hathern”. The show

features photographs of Hathern and its people covering more than a century of history, and gives a real

insight into how the village has changed over that period. The pictures are accompanied by the voices

of Hathern residents who have lived through those changes. The show lasts 90 minutes and there will be

refreshments in the interval.

Both of these events are free of charge and will be of interest to anyone living in Hathern, whether

lifelong residents or newcomers to the village.

PRAISE IN THE PARK On Wednesday 12th June, we will be holding our popular monthly Praise Evening in the marquee

on the Park. Join us for an evening of lively worship through song, some lovely music, and

refreshment/wine afterwards.

Did you know that in mediaeval Switzerland they had bowling competitions and even bowling leagues?

It is believed that William Tell and his family were very good at it but, sadly, all the records have been lost over the centuries and now no-one knows for whom the Tells bowled!

What’s the difference between a sick horse and a dead bee? One’s a seedy beast and the other’s a bee deceased!

NOT MANY WAITING AT THE CHURCH The number of couples deciding to marry at a church or another religious building has fallen to an all-

time low, according to new official figures. Data released by the Office for National Statistics shows

religious ceremonies now account for less than a quarter of all weddings. Harry Benson, a Christian,

and research director at the Marriage Foundation, told The Times: "Low marriage rates show how

much we have lost confidence in marriage, and yet marriages are as strong as ever. Divorce rates

are at their lowest level in 50 years." Religious weddings accounted for 60,069 of the 249,793

ceremonies recorded in 2016.

ANNUAL GIFT DAY Saturday 29th June is St Peter’s Day and we use this Patronal Festival as a reminder to the people of

Hathern that their Parish Church in this village, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul, remains standing

because of the generosity of worshippers, users, visitors and villagers, past and present, in giving to the

church for its on-going maintenance and upkeep.

Recent major expenditure has been on

Heating, lighting and cleaning the church as always

Statutory 5-year electrical inspection

Statutory annual gas and gas appliance inspection

Annual fire extinguisher inspection and testing

Replacement of tiles and flashing on the North Aisle roof

Chancel, scaffolding and major redecoration

So, once again, we are asking you to dig deep, and make a gift to

the church for its continued presence as a centre of Hathern life.

This year, as well as being at the Cross from 9:00am until 12 noon,

we shall be having refreshments in church, too. Coffee or tea with a

bacon or sausage buttie, only £3! Bargain!

PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR PARISH CHURCH, THANK YOU!

A couple were in bed, fast asleep, when there’s a

knock on the door. The husband tried to ignore it but

the wife says “answer it, it could be an emergency”. So

he does – there’s a drunk man saying “Thank goodness

you’ve answered, can you give me a push?” “No

way” says the husband “I’m in my pyjamas” and slams

the door. But the wife admonishes him when he tells

her - “Remember when we broke down, and people

helped us?” “Yes, dear, you’re right!”. So he goes

down to the door again. “Still want that push, mate?”

he shouts. “Yes, please” comes the faint reply. “Where

are you, then?” “Over here, mate, on your swing!”

THE DOWN AND UP MESSAGE

(Read this from top to bottom)

The human community is the hope of the world?

No, the fact is

that God does not dwell in us anymore.

I do not believe

that joy is possible

that living in community is better

that we should love each other in a profound way,

The truth is

that human community is about to die out.

I refuse to believe

that we are part of something bigger than ourselves

and

that we have been changed in order to make a difference.

It is very clear

that poverty is overpowering,

that racism cannot be overcome,

that evil will never be defeated.

I cannot believe

that things will change for the better in the future.

It will turn out

that God cannot help.

and you are wrong, if you believe

God can do it.

I'm convinced

things cannot be changed.

It would be a lie, were I to say,

God cares!

SAY AMEN TO THAT AMENIS is an Aramaic term associated with Hebrew, which came into English via Latin, which in

turn inherited it from Greek. It is difficult to translate the term directly, it being the nature of words

which are difficult to translate for them to be adopted per se by other languages as ‘loan words’.

The root of this Hebrew term, deriving from ‘aman’, conveys the meaning of to be firm, confirmed,

reliable, faithful, to have faith, to believe. It is readily associated with the Hebrew term ‘emet’

conveying the idea of certainty, reliability and truth. Amenis is regularly used as an interjection

expressing agreement, affirmation, approval, confirmation, e.g. ‘Amen to that’. So an expression

like ‘Amen, amen, I say to you …’ could be readily translated as ‘Verily, verily I say unto you … ’,

enforcing the concept of belief, certainty and truth. Saying ‘Amen’ in response to a statement, or

in the church’s case a prayer, shows affirmation and agreement – e.g. ‘so be it’ – with what is

being declared
