Altar Angels: A team of four families is assigned each week to clean the church. The first family listed is the team coordinator. Please contact Flo Howard in the parish office, 882-6468, for instructions and to set a time to clean the church prior to the weekend Masses.

The timing could vary from week to week, depending on scheduled events (such as weddings and funerals) and other activities. Thank you for your service to our parish family!

If you are unable to serve in your ministry at the scheduled time, please obtain a substitute or trade times with someone. Thank you for all you do to make our Liturgy so special!

Bishop McKnight’s September Prayer Intention for our Local Church: “For first responders; that God’s holy angels may watch over and protect those who place themselves in harm’s way to serve their neighbors.” The Pope’s Prayer Intention for September (The Protection of the Oceans): “That politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world's seas and oceans.”

The Story of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary This feast is a counterpart to the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus; both have the possibility of uniting people easily divided on other matters.

The feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary began in Spain in 1513 and in 1671 was extended to all of Spain and the Kingdom of Naples. In 1683, John Sobieski, king of Poland, brought an army to the

outskirts of Vienna to stop the advance of Muslim armies loyal to Mohammed IV of Constantinople. After Sobieski entrusted himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary, he and his soldiers thoroughly defeated the Muslims. Pope Innocent XI extended this feast to the entire Church. Reflection Mary always points us to God, reminding us of God’s infinite goodness. She helps us to open

our hearts to God’s ways, wherever those may lead us. Honored under the title “Queen of Peace,” Mary encourages us to cooperate with Jesus in building a peace based on justice, a peace that respects the fundamental human rights of all peoples.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Machelle Dick, daughter -in-law of Anna Dick, who died August 28, 2019 in Columbia. “May the souls of your faithful departed, through Your mercy Oh God, rest in peace, and may their families and friends receive comfort from the Lord.”

Join us Sunday, Sept. 8 for Hospitality and Fellowship

in church hall following the 10:30 a.m. Mass.

The Social Concerns Commi ee will be serving sandwiches, chips and veggies.

All are invited to a end!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Chris ans share a love for the Byzan ne liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its iden ty, expresses its integrity, and discovers its voca on. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Chris ans celebrate essen ally the iden cal liturgy, with only very slight varia ons. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, o en hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twen eth century, La n Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and ac ve,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contempla on, and by the ac ons of bowing, signing with the cross, and chan ng that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Formed Pick of the Week Kimberly Hahn, wife of Dr. Scott Hahn, shares how she came to know and love Mary as an example of drawing closer to Christ through suffering.

Hahn, a speaker, author, and mother of six, is a convert to the Catholic Faith. Although honoring Mary was difficult for her to understand initially, she began to encounter Mary's loving guidance in little ways on a daily basis. In this presentation, Kimberly reflects on the joys and sorrows that Mary prayerfully experienced during her time on earth, and shares how her example leads us closer to Christ.

Go to stschurch.formed.org and listen to “Drawing Strength from Our Lady of Sorrows.” Follow the instructions to set up a free account.

Brian Lutz leads a Rosary followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

Prayers are offered for victims of abuse, all priests and all religious, and for healing

within the church.

Well, If you’ve been following my blog or Instagram, you know that my sister, Sr. Francesca, is a Franciscan Sister. A er achieving her Chemistry degree Barnard College/Columbia University in New York City, she entered the Community Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal. (What’s the quote about if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans? Hmmm …. Ol.) In her order, she wears a full habit (she only gets TWO of them). Her order focuses on the OG (aka: the original) rule of St. Francis: which means embracing charity, obedience, and poverty. There are a LOT of cool things about her way of life (that only I know because she’s my sister) so of course I must share it with you! I have learned, thanks to her, that there is SO MUCH MORE MEANING behind what they wear (known as a habit). One element of her habit I have always found completely mesmerizing is… her veil! Today though, I’d like to just talk about her veil (because it really is worth its own post). And there are four facts about it that I think are SO fascina ng that give you a glimpse of WHY a Franciscan sister wears a veil. 1. A sign of consecra on The veil for a religious sister is a sign of consecra on, it’s a sign of being set apart for God. You can sort of compare it to a married woman’s wedding ring. 2. The veil itself is very bridal Since a religious sister is the spouse (bride) of Christ, it is her way of wearing her bridal veil -- and bridal gown -- every day of her life.” 3. The veil is also Biblical, and has Jewish roots You might be familiar with how Orthodox Jewish women, once they’re married, shave their heads and wear wigs. Only their husband and their father who are allowed to see their uncovered head. Sisters are not the first people to come up with this. 4. Following St. Claire Her Franciscan order chooses to follow what St. Claire did. When she wanted to leave the world and live her life for God, St. Francis and the early brothers brought her to a li le church, Our Lady of the Angels. To show that she was renouncing the world, the brothers cut off all her hair. She had long, lovely hair (you can s ll see her beau ful curls at the basilica in Asisi in Santa Chiara), so it’s a big deal! So once they cut her hair, she wore a veil and that was to show she had stepped outside of the world and into the service of Christ. And there you go! Some food for thought for you this week that’s a li le outside the usual style advice. Even though this is a very radical way of living out your faith through your clothing, it does show how what we wear CAN also carry a message for others and be a message to ourselves to s ck closer to Christ (and to the ones we love).
