TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel (Isaiah 5:1-7). Psalm — The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel (Psalm 80). Second Reading — God’s peace will guard your hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6-9). Gospel — The kingdom of God will be given to those who will produce its fruit (Matthew 21:33-43).

THE GIFT OF THE REIGN OF GOD Matthew’s Gospel today expands on Isaiah’s ballad consider-ably. A comparison with the same story in Mark’s Gospel clearly shows us that here the author is busy teaching this community of Jewish Christians: “This is a story about Israel a long time ago; this is also a story about Jesus and the skeptical leaders.” Jesus as much as told these Jewish leaders that they were the tenants who first stoned their own prophets. Oct. 4: Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226 ) When Franco Zeffirelli’s Brother Sun, Sister Moon was released (1972), people were shocked by the movie’s graphic nudity in the drama c conversion scene. Son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ aimless adolescence ended when a failed military expedi on led to his imprisonment and complete breakdown. Once home, Francis rediscovered God in the beauty of nature and the ugliness of human suffering, caring for lepers, praying in the li le church of San Damiano, whose crucified Jesus he heard calling, “Repair my house, Francis, which is falling into ruins.” Francis sold his possessions—and his father’s—to fulfill this command. When his father objected, Francis disrobed: “I return the clothes, your name, and all you gave me: God alone is my Father now.” Later, the pope would dream of a ragged friar stretching forth a single hand to prop up the crumbling papal Cathedral of Saint John Lateran. Francis indeed helped rebuild the universal Church, founding the Friars Minor (Franciscans), dying at a young forty-four, bearing the s gmata of the Christ whose living icon he remains—in the Church and far beyond it.

FROM BISHOP MCKNIGHT Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship continues to present to the Catholic faithful, and all those of good will, an up-to-date guide to help form consciences as they participate in the civil order and public life. You can obtain a copy at https://www.usccb.org/resources/forming-consciences-faithful-citizenship-pdf.

No bishop, priest, deacon, religious or lay ecclesial minister shall endorse or oppose a candidate in the name of the Church. Instead, we must assist the faithful to approach the election with a fully formed conscience. My full statement on this is online at https://diojeffcity.org/blog/2020/09/27/the-times-that-try-our-souls/ and is published in the Oct. 2 issue of The Catholic Missourian.

Volleyball Season: Fr iday was the Pink-out Match with LSE Middle School. The results will have to be reported next week. This upcoming week, the teams travel to Lange Middle School and will play Jefferson Middle School at home on Wednesday. The season is scheduled to wind up next week on October 13 at St. Peter’s in Marshall. Parent/Teacher Conferences: While the conferences are a month away yet, the teachers are beginning preparations. The structure will most likely be different than past years so we can practice social distancing and avoid crowds. Most likely there will be conferences scheduled earlier and also some video conferences. Student Information System: Family access to the FACTS student information system has been opened up. Parents, please refer to the email with directions on how to establish access and information on how to use the system. If you need assistance, please contact the school. Maintenance Director: We do still have an opening for a full-time parish campus maintenance director. This a great opportunity to work with great people and serve God and the church. We do offer a full benefits package and competitive salary.

SS. Peter and Paul Home & School Associa on Cookbook

This year has been a me of uncertainty. We have missed many social events, church dinners, and family gatherings. Both physically and metaphorically the table has become an icon of God’s grace and goodness. To make a place at the table is to occupy a sacred space. Meals are shared. Stories are told. Sins are confessed. We laugh and cry together. We pray at the table and experience God’s nearness, God’s kindness, and God’s love. Let us share our favorite recipes so that we may share in each other’s table. This year, the SSPP Home & School Associa on will be collabora ng with the school and parish to create a cookbook. All submissions must be received by October 10. To submit a recipe, you can: Send it to school in an envelope with “A n:
