Arun Shourie, one of the most influential BJP ideologues during the AB Vajpayee government, on Friday launched a surprising, relentless attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. Why spare the bus owners? Punjab molestation case is no different from Uber rape incident Agency : Moga In 2012, while contest- ing the Punjab Assem- bly polls, Sukhbir Singh Badal declared himself a humble farmer. His only vehicle: an old Mussy tractor worth around Rs 2 lakh. A few months later, ‘politician and agri- culturist’ Badal acquired a huge stake in a fami- ly-owned aviation com- pany engaged in ferrying passengers on planes and buses. According to the Registrar of Companies (RoC) documents, Sukh- bir now holds shares in Orbit Aviation in three different ways: 5,000 di- rect shares, about 2 crore shares through his hos- pitality firm Orbit Re- sorts and 41 lakh shares through his media firm called G-Next Media Private Limited. Badal’s aviation company has three flying jets - an eight-seater Cessna 525A jet, another eight-seater Super King Air B 200 and a helicopter Bell 429,” according to the Times of India. On Wednes- day night, a 13-year-old girl died when she was thrown out after being molested by the staff and some passengers while travelling in a bus in Punjab. The victim’s mother, who was also pushed out, is hospital- ized with severe injuries. The incident was a re-run of the Nirbhaya gang- rape in Delhi, except that the outrage was limited to Punjab. The bus be- longed to Orbit Aviation, the company co-owned by Sukhbir Singh Bada Badal, deputy chief min- ister of Punjab. Sakshi Maharaj kicks up anoth- er row, calls Rahul Gandhi ‘mad’ Agency : Etah Controversy prone BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj on Friday kicked up anoth- er row when he called Rahul Gandhi “mad” while trying to ridicule the Congress Vice Pres- ident’s attempts to reach out to distressed farm- ers in the recent days. Maharaj also compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Lord Krish- na, saying like Krishna saved Draupadi, he res- cued Nepal. Taking a dig at Gandhi, the BJP MP from Unnao said he does not know the differ- ence between wheat and maize. “I say that Rahul Gandhi has gone mad. He does not known the ABCD of politics. He is talking of farmers but does not know the dif- ference between wheat and maize,” Maharaj said addressing a meet- ing at Amroli Ratanpur village. While referring to the rescue and rehabil- itation efforts launched by the NDA government in quake-hit Nepal, Ma- haraj said,” after the dev- astation in Nepal, Modi reacted without hesita- tion. Similarly, Krishna had helped Draupadi when she needed it with- out hesitation. Modi has done the work of saving Nepal like Lord Krishna.” On the agrar- ian crisis, Maharaj said the Uttar Pradesh gov- ernment has failed to address this problem in the state and that the funds allocated by Cen- tral government to the distressed farmers have not reached them. News Brief JK legislator slams Pak for remarks on KP settlement Agency : Jammu, May 1 BJP MLC Surinder Am- bardar today slammed Pakistan for its remarks on the proposed settle- ment of Kashmiri Pan- dits, and said the neigh- bouring country was “instrumental in demo- graphically dividing Kashmir Valley by forc- ing religious minorities into exile”. Pakistan had yesterday said that any effort to establish dedicated townships to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir would be in violation of UN resolutions. “Paki- stan was instrumental in demographically divid- ing Kashmir by forcing religious minorities of Pandits into exile and thus changing the Sufi rishi fabric of Kashmir,” Ambardar said here to- night. Sr IAS officer SS Yadav appointed secy to Kejriwal Agency : New Delhi, May 1 Senior IAS officer SS Yadav, who is current- ly CEO of Delhi Jal Board (DJB), has been appointed as the Secre- tary to Delhi Chief Min- ister Arvind Kejriwal.A 1995-batch IAS officer, Yadav is also holding charge as secretary and director of Information and Publicity. “Yadav is posted as secretary to CM Kejriwal. Further, Yadav shall continue to hold the additional charge of the posts of CEO (DJB) and secre- tary and director (Infor- mation and Publicity),” a senior Delhi govern- ment official in a state- ment. Maintain constant vigil along LOC and IB: DGP Agency : Jammu, May 1 The Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Po- lice has asked the police to maintain constant vigil along the Line of Control (LOC) and International Border (IB) to check the infiltration. “In regards to cross border activities the police must maintain a constant vigil along the LOC and the IB and de- feat nefarious designs of enemies to infiltrate into our areas and disturb the peace” DGP JK Police K Rajendra Kumar said. Agency : New Delhi Arun Shourie, a BJP min- ister in the Vajpayee Cabi- net, on Friday hit out at the Narendra Modi govern- ment, saying its economic policy was “directionless” while the social climate was causing “great anxi- ety” among the minorities. The 73-year-old journal- ist-turned politician said the one-year rule of Modi was “good in parts”, his transformation as prime minister was good in for- eign policy, but the prom- ised turnaround in econ- omy has not happened. “The government seems to be more concerned with managing headlines than putting policies in place. The situation is like the many pieces of a jigsaw puzzle lying in a mess with no big picture in mind about how to put them together,” he said in an exclusive interview with Headlines Today’s Karan Thapar ahead of the first anniversary of the Modi government. Shourie, who is not active in BJP these days, said despite prom- ises the fears of foreign investors on retrospective taxes and incentives for manufacturing have not materialised on the ground. “They (investors) require stability and predictabil- ity,” he said, adding that the concern expressed by eminent banker Deepak Parekh on the situation on the ground should be seen as a “wake up call”. Asked if the Modi government had done enough to put In- dia on growth path, Shou- rie said that it was “all hy- perbole”. “Such claims are meant to grab headlines but lack substance,” he said. He was also critical of handling of the tax issues which was keeping for- eign investors away. “First it alienated them but now it has made them laugh. You come out as bullies.” On the social front, Shou- rie said there was “great anxiety” among the mi- norities in the wake of the incidents of attack on Christian institutions and the “Ghar Wapsi” and “Love Jihad” campaigns. He was critical of Modi’s “silence” on issues relat- ing to social tensions on account of activities of right wing organisations and statements by some party MPs and leaders. “You tweet when Sania Mirza wins champion- ship or greet someone on birthdays but you don’t do such things when mor- al questions are involved. People doubt why he is si- lent,” he added. Referring to former IPS officer Julio Ribeiro’s recent anguish that he felt like an “outsid- er” against the backdrop of attacks on churches, Shourie said when peo- ple of such standing make such remarks it means things have gone too far. “We have to wake up,” he said, adding that people like Ribeiro and former Punjab top cop KPS Gill had saved Punjab for In- dia. Talking about alien- ation of Muslim youth in the context of “Love Jihad” and Moradabad vi- olence, Shourie said, “if 100 muslim youth come together and conclude that we are not getting justice here and that ISIS is right then we have a problem at hand”. Reply- ing to questions, Shourie said Modi, Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley were running the party. “It has offended the opposition as well as frightened the members of the BJP,” he said. “They are the ones responsible for mistakes and they are also the Supreme Court. The three leaders are not getting proper feedback and no corrective action takes place,” he said. Shourie also invoked the controversial mono- grammed pin-striped suit that Modi wore during his interaction with US Presi- dent Barack Obama earli- er this year. Opposition fires at govt for petro-diesel price hike Agency : New Delhi The opposition on Fri- day protested the late Thursday-night decision to increase the prices of petrol and diesel; call- ing it arbitrary and yet another manifestation of the Modi Government’s disconnect with the peo- ple and their problems. Reacting to the deci- sion of public sector oil marketing companies to hike the retail sell- ing price of petrol and diesel by Rs. 3.96 a li- tre and Rs. 2.37 respec- tively, Congress media in-charge Randeep Sur- jewala said, “This is an- other anti-people step reflecting a disconnect with people-oriented governance.” The Gov- ernment, he added, was profiteering at the cost of the gullible farmer and common man in- stead of adjusting excise and customs duty reve- nue which is leading to an accrual of additional Rs. 90,000 crore. “We demand rollback of this massive increase at a time when the common man is already reeling under unprecedented inflation.” Condemn- ing the “massive hike”, the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of In- dia (Marxist) noted that this would “lead to the cascading of the infla- tionary spiral imposing unprecedented burdens on the working peo- ple once again in a big way”. The CPI (M) also urged people to protest against this latest impo- sition of burden on their livelihood. The CPI na- tional secretary D. Raja accused the Government of asking the oil market- ing companies to hike diesel and petrol prices “arbitrarily”; adding that the Government was completely oblivious to the problems of the common man. 2 nd May, 2015 - Saturday Modi govt lacks clear vision on economy : Arun Shourie Annual Subscription : Rs. 300 /- Edition : Ahmedabad. QUOTE OF THE

DAYKatrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Ka-poor find it hard to get intimateAgency : New Delhi

They may be playing lovers in Fitoor and have even locked lips in Kash-mir, but both the actors are having a tough time shooting intimate scenes for the film. Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapoor reportedly took 12 hours and endless rehearsals to get intimate for a scene in Fitoor. The film is Bollywood adaptation of Charles Dickens’ clas-sic novel The Great Ex-pectations. According to Mumbai Mirror, Katrina and Aditya rehearsed the scene for over four hours before they finally got it right. “By the end of the day, they were frazzled. And this is certainly not

the end of their sched-ule as there will be a lot more passionate kissing in the days to come,” the daily quoted a source as saying. In February, the on-screen pair had shot a kissing scene in Srinagar’s Nishat Bagh during Fitoor’s Kashmir schedule. A funeral scene, reportedly that of Rekha’s

character, was also canned in Kashmir. Katrina and Aditya are working to-gether for the first time in the movie which also stars Rekha, Lara Dutta, Aditi Rao Hydari, Rahul Bhat and Akshay Oberoi. Directed by Abhishek Ka-poor, the love story is slat-ed for February 12, 2016 release.

Hrithik Roshan in ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’?

Agency : New DelhiHrithik Roshan had done a cameo in Zoya Akhtar’s

Luck By Chance and was the leading hero in her next- Zindagi Na Mile-

gi Dobara. Now if re-ports are to be believed, Hrithik will also been playing a guest star in Zoya’s upcoming cruise flick Dil Dhadakne Do. Sources told us, “Zoya and Hrithik are best friends and when Zoya approached Duggu for the role, he hap-pily obliged.” It’s still not known what Hrithik plays in the film but his charac-ter comes at an important juncture in the film. Previ-ously too, Zoya had got a bunch of her Bolly friends make interesting cameos in her first film and in DDD too, it seems that she’s reached out to Hrithik for the same.

My graduate degree didn’t pay in acting career: Irrfan

Agency : MumbaiIrrfan Khan, who has al-ways chosen to tread the unbeaten path in Hin-di filmdom, believes in “wholesome” education, but says his own gradua-tion degree turned out to be “useless” for his ca-reer as an actor. Some of Bollywood’s leading ac-tors have made it big with their talent despite not having completed their education. Irrfan feels it’s always good when peo-ple follow their interest rather than chasing the ‘formula’ of completing education first and then stepping into the field they desire. at a school here, Irrfan said: “If you have done your schooling and if your kids decide

to go for their passion (acting), it’s their choice. You can’t force such things (further studies) on your kids. You can’t have the formula of do-ing graduation first and then MBA and then come to acting (or what-ever their passion is).” Citing his own example, the “Slumdog Million-aire” actor, who is a fa-ther of two in real life, recollected how “my mother’s only condition was ‘Tu graduate hoja, fir jo karna hai kar lena’ (finish your graduation first and then do whatev-er you feel like)”. “But for me, that is (turned out to be) useless. It didn’t pay me at all,” said the 48-year-old actor. “Our

kids today have become much smarter. When you ask them that ‘What do you want to do’, they say that they will decide when they are in eleventh or twelfth standard. I feel that’s good and I respect that. They want to see where their interest lies and then they think of de-ciding their career. That’s very good,” he added.

Chetan Bhagat is the X-factor on Nach Baliye 7, says Ekta Kapoor

Agency : New DelhiThe Czarina of TV is pro-ducing the seventh season of Nach Baliye and the ‘too much’ factor has been all over in the promos and the promotions. With the first episode of Nach Baliye out, the author and judge Chetan Bhagat has received a lot of flak for his unconventional stand on the jodis. However, the producer has a differ-ent line of thought. Ac-cording to Ekta Kapoor,

Chetan is the ‘X-Factor’ of the show. Preity Zinta and Marzi Pestonji also are on the judges panel alongside Chetan Bhagat for this season which is being produced by Ekta Kapoor who has her name credited with shows like Bade Acche Lagte Hai, Kumkum Bhagya, Kyun-ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahut Thi among others. “This year, the season will not only focus on the dance of the couples but will

also bring to the light, the unexplored chapters of their relationship. This season will be all about ‘too much’,” she said in a statement. “Chetan is the X-factor of this season as he will look beyond dance and act as a moti-vator and storyteller who will find the real perfect jodi of Nach Baliye,” she added. Ekta says the rea-son she took up this show was that it gave her the opportunity to explore the stories of 11 jodis which were so different from each other. With a lot of twist and turns planned for the upcoming season all the jodis will be seen in a never seen avatar which will make the viewers watch the show from a completely new perspec-tive. “The audience today don’t want the glitz and glamour only. They want to see the reality behind all the vanity and the three judges will bring their masks off,” Ekta revealed to an online portal.

Agency : New DelhiA dialogue in ‘Gabbar is Back’ says: Our sys-tem has become like a baby’s diaper. Re-made from the Tamil film ‘Ramanaa’ by A Murugadoss, ‘Gabbar is Back’ is about a vigilan-te (Akshay Kumar) who leads a team of young micro vigilantes in pun-ishing corrupt govern-ment officials. They profile, research & then punish in a public man-ner by hanging corrupt men in public view, in-spired by Saddam Hus-sein’s dictatorial regime in Iraq, I assume.

Karan Johar’s ‘Brothers’ to release on August 14

Twitter page. This film marks Malhotra’s third reunion with Johar after “My Name Is Khan”, where he acted as an assistant director, and “Agneepath”. “Broth-ers” is said to be an offi-cial remake of the 2011 Hollywood film “War-rior”, which starred Joel Edgerton and Tom Har-dy in the lead.

Anushka Sharma turns 27

Agency : New DelhiFrom a shy and beauti-ful girl in “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” to a helpful TV reporter in “PK,” young and vivacious Anushka Sharma, who turned 27 on Friday, has proved her potential as an actress in each of her films she has been a part of. Start-ing her career in 2008, Anushka has featured in just nine movies so far, and has played assorted characters, proving that she is in the Hindi film

industry for a long haul. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi took to micro—blogging website Twitter to wish Anushka. “Dear dear Anushka Sharma wish you a very happy birthday and more power to your fiesty spirit! Lots of love.”The daughter of an army officer, Anushka would now be seen play-ing character of a 1960s jazz singer “Bombay Vel-vet” opposite actor Ran-bir Kapoor and actor—filmmaker Karan Johar.

Did Shri Badal Visit The Bus Firm to Collect Profits?

The girl died. She must have fallen very hard when her tormentors threw her off the bus. She was only 13 years old, a student of Class 9. The men, employ-ees of the transport company encouraged reportedly by a group of young male passengers, made sexist remarks, repeatedly harassing her sexually. She re-sisted, fought them back. No one came to help her, except her mother. She too was sexually harassed. She pleaded with the driver to let them off the bus but he paid no heed. The daughter was violently pushed off a speeding bus and then they pushed off the mother. It all happened just a few kilometers away from the town of Moga in Punjab. This is what the first reports suggest. The mother lies today in a hospital with critical injuries. The girl’s brother, just a year older, who was with them on the bus, report-edly jumped off. It was he who called for help. The men have been arrested.A 13-year-old girl dead, a family destroyed, because governments have not learnt any lessons. The Chief Minister of Punjab owns the bus and the large trans-port company, Orbit Aviation, which runs a fleet of buses within Punjab and on lucrative routes between Punjab and other states. While regretting the inci-dent, the Chief Minister said “Yes, it is my company but I have never even visited its office.” Presumably he made this statement to rid himself of any respon-sibility, the sub-text being, if he has not visited the office, how can he be held responsible? Someone needs to ask him, but without visiting the office, do you get the profits from the company? The Chief Minister also added for good measure that he “would speak to Sukhbir about it.” Sukhbir is of course his son and also the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. Perhaps he used to visit the office. But whether or not they visited the office, as owners of the compa-ny, they had a responsibility of ensuring the safety of passengers. As leaders of the Government, they had an even greater responsibility of ensuring the high-est standards in safety and security on the buses they owned. After all, if the buses owned by the Chief Minister’s family do not adhere to such standards, what message does it give to other transport own-ers? It is another matter if ethically elected leaders running Governments should be in such business-es which are clearly an area of conflict of interest - but that is another discussion. The Badals knew what was required. They knew of Nirbhaya who was gang-raped, violated, killed in a licensed bus run by a private operator in the Capital of our country. The country rose in protest and outrage. It happened just three years ago. A young woman using public trans-port paid for it with her life. Questions were raised. If she were from an affluent family with her own car, would she have been safer?

Kolkata eyes winning momen-tum, take on resurgent Bangalore

Agency : Bengaluru Pumped up after a thrilling win over the smooth-sailing Chennai Super Kings, defend-ing champions Kolkata Knight Riders will take on the resurgent Royal Challengers Bangalore in an IPL cricket match in Bangalore on Saturday. With Thursday night’s win, KKR moved up a rung to the third position on the points table with four wins, two losses and one abandoned match.

RCB, on the other hand, have won three and lost as many in seven games and are on fourth position. For KKR, the last-over win against CSK came as a massive shot in the arm as they prepare to take on a rejuvenated RCB, who posted 200 runs despite the failures of Kohli and West Indian swashbuck-ler Chris Gayle, against Rajasthan Royals. Cap-tain Gautam Gambhir lauded the power-packed innings of Robin Uthap-

pa and Andre Russell, which helped KKR come back on track. Uthappa cracked a match winning unbeaten 80 and stitched a superb partnership for the fourth wicket along with Russell, who scored a brilliant unbeaten 55 in no time. Other batsmen, including Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan, have been inconsistent and bowl-ing has been a bit patchy. However, Australian Chi-naman bowler Brad Hogg has bolstered the bowling after he picked up crucial wickets against CSK in the last match. For RCB, it has been a mixed bag so far, recording three wins and as many loses. But after a sedate start, RCB returned to form with two consecutive away wins against Rajas-than in Ahmedabad and Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

IPL 8: Dhoni wants CSK to be more aggressive

Agency : KolkataAfter going down to de-fending champions Kol-kata Knight Riders in a tantalisingly close game, Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni said on Thursday that his boys need to be a bit more aggressive, considering they were leading the ta-ble in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). “Looking at where we

are in the table, I think it’s important we try to be a bit more aggressive, see what we can explore and how we can play,” Dhoni said after the Eden Gar-dens match. Three time winners Chennai Super Kings lost the game by seven wickets, to retain their pole position with 12 points from eight games. Dhoni said while batting his team did lose a few

wickets, but felt it was largely a conservative ef-fort. Chennai notched up 165 for 9, but the Knights reached a winning 169 for 3 in with a ball to spare. Cricket Australia considers re-turn to longer-term contracts

Agency : New DelhiCA chairman Wally Ed-wards yesterday down-played as “highly specu-lative” reports of a rebel league being set up by In-dian billionaire Subhash Chandra’s Essel Group, but there is certainly

enough substance to the threat for CA and the In-ternational Cricket Coun-cil to be on high alert. At present, CA signs its con-tracted players — there are 19 of them on the 2015-16 list — to one-year deals but insiders

have told The Weekend Australian consideration is now being given to locking them into con-tracts of longer duration, both as a way of binding them more securely but also to provide the play-ers with more financial certainty. It’s the roll-er-coaster nature of the annual contracting pro-cess, with a player pos-sibly earning $700,000 one year and $70,000 the next, that leaves Austra-lian cricketers vulnerable to being pirated by a rebel organisation such as the Essel Group.

IPL 8 DD vs KXIP as it happened: Clinical DD thump KXIP by 9 wickets

Agency : New DelhiFollowing their humiliat-ing 10-wicket loss to Roy-al Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Daredevils have no option but to go all out against Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Pre-mier League (IPL) at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Friday. RCB pacers Mitchell Starc (3/20), Varun Aaron (2/24) and David Wiese (2/18) bowled their hearts out to bundle Daredevils out for a meagre 95 in 18.2 overs here on Sunday. In reply, Chris Gayle (62 not out) and skipper Virat Kohli (35 not out) chased down the target in just 10.3 overs. Each and every Daredevils bowler was smashed all over the park by the RCB openers.

The side is now placed sixth on the table with six points from seven matches. Despite having experienced and quality batsmen in the squad like Yuvraj Singh, J.P. Dumi-ny, Angelo Mathews, the side has failed to show any improvement after their early losses. IPL’s rich-est buy Yuvraj, who was

bought for Rs.16 crore in the 2015 auction, is yet to fire. Their bowlers Nathan Coulter-Nile, Amit Mish-ra, Domnic Muthuswami all leaked runs both at start and death. Spinner Imram Tahir (13 wickets) has been the most economical of the lot but the absence of the injured Zaheer Khan has hurt the side.

Agency : Kolkata The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) has expressed support for West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, who has been banned from bowling off-breaks in matches organ-ised by the Board of Con-trol for Cricket in India

(BCCI). The TTCB has dispatched a letter to Na-rine pledging its support and offering assistance to the spinner whose ban also extends to Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Narine could be suspended if he uses the off-break again in the on-

Ticket prices starting to fall for Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight

Agency : Las Vegas Boxing fans who can make their way to Las Vegas might be actually be able to buy a ticket to the fight between Floyd Mayweath-er and Manny Pacquiao for close to face value come Saturday night. The rough-ly 500 tickets released to the public sold out with-in minutes last week, but the resale market -- minus

an initial blip after tickets were committed to the pro-moters, sponsors and high rollers -- has started to fall. There are currently more than 1,000 tickets on the online resale market and untold amounts of seats available on the ground in Las Vegas. More than 30 tickets sold early Friday on StubHub as of 9:45 a.m. ET for an average price of

$3,899. That’s compared to 156 tickets that sold for an average of $800 more on Thursday ($4,693). Perhaps the most troubling sign for those selling tick-ets is that 10 tickets sold for less than the investment in the ticket, after fees. One broker Friday was offering to sell a block of 13 seats, with a $5,000 ticket value, for $5,100 each.
