Explorer Notes Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus’s goal was to find Asia but instead landed on an island and claimed it San Salvador. When he sailed again to find Asia, he landed on what today is known as the Bahamas.
Cabeza de VacaCabeza de Vaca came to America with Panfilo de Navarez where they landed in Florida. The crew decided to sail to Mexico but was hit by a hurricane that landed them in what is today known as Galveston. De Vaca stayed in Galveston for three years.
Francisco Vasquez de CoronadoFrancisco Vasquez de Cornoado led an expedition through Mexico and up through Texas and Arizona. Coronado and his crew were the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon. They crossed the Pecos River onto the West Texas Plains. Eventually Coronado and his men reached Palo Duro Canyon, near present-day Amarillo.
Sieur de la SalleSieur de la Salle led an expedition down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed land along the way for France. Later la Salle sailed past the mouth of the Mississippi River and landed in Texas instead. They created a fort and named it Fort St. Louis. The fort was located between present-day Galveston and Corpus Christi.
