Rapid urbanization and unorganized growth in the city have led to many problems, one of the major problems being emergence of slums and squatters in the city. This stupendous growth in the population of Srinagar urban centre has led to unprecedented area expansion in the same with slow and sluggish growth in other small and medium sized urban centres. (2) River Jhelum is the major source of water in Srinagar and the city completely lacks a proper groundwater resource system. The Public Health Engineering Department is responsible for creating water networks and laying down pipelines in the city and also to ensure clean drinking water in all parts of the city., while the Jammu Kashmir Water Resources Regulation & Management is responsible for supplying water. (3) (4) (5) Control Ground Water Board, which comes under the State Govt is responsible for supplying groundwater to only a few parts of the city. The revenue collected from water supply is collected by the State Government. (6) Construction and maintenance of drainage and sewerage activities are undertaken by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) (7) Housing and Urban Development Department of the J&K State Government (JKHUDD). (8) Creation of sewarage utilities is undertaken by PHE Department. (9) The Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), under the Jammu Kashmir Urban Sector Investment Programme funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has undertaken the project of constructing storm water drains adjoining in the areas of NH- bypass along the city. (10) (11) The power supply enjoyed by the city is a function that comes under the State Government and the Jammu Kashmir Power Development Department is responsible for supplying power in all parts of the city and is also responsible for collection of revenues from the same. (12) Srinagar Development Authority and Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department are responsible for installation and maintenance of road markings and signage. (13) GSPC India Gasnet Limited (GIGL) has taken up the project for installation of underground gas pipelines across the city, funding approval is still pending for this project by the PNGRB (Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board). (14) The slum dwellers living in the slums of Srinagar are deprived of the bare minimum amenities offered by the above-mentioned authorities.
