  • AIM

To revitalize and integrate the heritage zones of Downtown Srinagar. To infuse growth impulses for socio-cultural and economic development of the area. To develop the area as a vibrant tourism sector.

    OBJECTIVE

To revive and enhance the the cultural landscape of the region by value addition to the heritage areas. To create public spaces for the community and for the promotion of tourism. To restore and respect the vernacular architecture of the area. To strengthen the human and water relationship along River Jhelum. To empower the social and cultural fabric by community capacity building and sensitization.

    SCOPE OF STUDY

This project identifies the existing heritage zones lying aong the banks of River Jhelum in the Dowtown area of Srinagar, Kashmir. It aims at reviving and integrating these areas which have been completely neglected during the evolution of the Old City. The project focusses on developing these zones as urban precincts for the local community as well as the tourists; giving a new tourism brand to Kashmir, which emphasizes on its built and cultural heritage rather than its natural beauty alone. This project would emphasize on increasing the community connection with the River, developing the passage as a vibrant activity route. Old dilapidated bridges which are presently unused can be consolidated with the existing city fabric. The design solutions would specially focus on community sensitization by introducing an interpretation center which includes craft development workshops to hone the skills of local craftsmen living in the area for which Kashmir is known.

METHODOLOGYThe methodology to be adopted for carrying out the project is as follows:

DATA COLLECTION:Data collection will be based on Primary as well as Secondary sources. Firstly, secondary references with authentic and reliable sources would be consulted, including Books, Articles, Government reports, Maps, etc. Then primary studies shall be carried out in the form of Site Visits, Surveys- Physical Infrastructure and Socio-economic, Interviews, Photography, etc.

SITE SURVEY:Extensive site survey will be conducted to observe and assess the area alongwith its context. The study will include a number of parameters as existing socio-cultural fabric, physical infrastructure, thorough activity mapping of the area and various linkages and movements connecting the area.

DATA ANALYSIS:The data collected will then be organized and analyzed to produce a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the study area. This includes the study of existing urban fabric, building typologies, condition assessment of the heritage zones and the activities of the settlement.

DATA SYNTHESIS:The collected and organized data shall then be used to identify the issues and weaknesses of the

  • area and also to build upon the strengths and opportunities provided by the region.

DESIGN INTERVENTION:Finally, suitable and feasible design interventions will be put forward both at the urban design scale as well as micro level to cater to the needs of the society and to improvise upon the diminshing heritage of the region.
