TIlE LECTURE ON COLOURS

The (listiiiCtlve task of the Theoricus, iii theSecondGiadeof oiii Society,is the studyof thesig) iific,i rice aiid symbohisin of Colours.

At the beginningof His work of creationGodsaid, Let there be Light andtherewas light. ThisWhite glory of the Beginningwas soondiveisified, reflectedin a myriad rays from [lie air, lire, waterandearthof the materialworld, andMan,in whomthe work of creationculminated, becameconsciousof colouis.

The rainbow in thie lieaveiis made manifesttoloin the whole iangeof colours, andhe soonwasa ble tod ist inguishi thesevenI hat wereniostevident, and~vhmiLhweknowas llcd,Oi ange,Yellow, Green,Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Thesecolours of therainbow are also seenon earthas wefi as in theheavens- we seethem in our flowersaiid fruits, onour hills and in ow valleys, in our metals, and onthe birds and animalsaround us.

Yellow and Blue - and there are someprimitivetribes thai candistinguishno others.

White is the combinationof all the colours andall religions haveattributed White and Light toGod,by whiatevcrnameHe may becallcd. White isanemblem of goodnessand pum ity. ‘1 lie pi iestsandministersof almostall faiths havebeenclothedinwhite garmentsin token of their high office. In theOld Testament~vereadof the white robesof Aaronandthesonsof Levi. And in theNewTestamentwemead: Hethat overcometh, the sameshallbeclothedin white rajinent

White is also the symbol of the beatificcombination of love, innocenceand faith whichleadto purity, peaceandperfection. The Diamondis the emblem.

Black is thecompleteabsenceof Light andColourand symbolisesevil, the antithesisof all that isgood, beautifuland true. It iefers to loss, despairanddeath.

The three piimary colours - Red, Yellow andBlue—havebeenatti ibutechto thieedivine qualities, namely -Redto God’s Omnipotence,Yellow to hisOmniscienceand Blue to his Omnipresence,or, in

othei words, to his Powei, Wisdom andUnivem sality.

In melalion to ivian, the colour lied denotescourage,~vill and force; henceto dominion andpower. It is also relatedto war andto eachman’sfight with hispassions.Yclhowiefersto intellectandknowledge, and thus to wisdom, and it isemblematicalof calm, peaceand gladness.Bluerefersto liononi, love, friendshipandfidelity, henceto benevolence.

In the world around us we associatethe colourRed ~vmthIjie, with blood and wine and ~viththeRuby. Yellow with the sun’s rays, giving life to allanimaland vegetablelife, with gold, cornand oil,and with the Topaz Blue with the vault of thecloudlessheavenand the deepseabeneathit andwith the Sapphire.

Thesethreecohouis predominatein flowersandare supplementedby Orange, Purple and Violet;and Greenis the almostuniversalcolour of leavesandgrowimigshootsof all vegetation. In symbolismGrccn refers to hope, progress, evolution andregenerationIt is typit’ied by [lie Enieiald

2t) 21

Purple has becomeassociatedhwith Imperial Ruleand dignity fiom its combinahionof power andlove. Its emblem is the Amethyst.

Orangehas been referredto zeal aiid enthusiasniand to mental andl moral (levelopmentand self-control. Violet is the colour refeired to penitence, and Grey is symbolicalof humility.

Brown is the colour of a largepart of the solidearth on which we live, and is associatedwithdurability, firmness, comislancy and self-abnegation.

So the varied colours by which we aiesurroundedin Natimme and‘which show forth thebeautiesof God’s creation, revealto us somethingof the Beautyof I his holiness, which it is our aim toieflect as bestwe can in our own lives.
