Message from the Organising Committee

It is with great pleasure we welcome you all for the 5th annual Olcott Inter-School Cricket Tournament being organized by the old boys of Olcott Schools living in the United Arab Emirates. We started this tournament in 2007 with Ananda, Nalanda, Mahinda, Dharmaraja and Maliyadeva, just five schools. Since then, this event has grown from strength to strength thanks to its popularity and number of participating schools had been increased to eight with Rahula, Dharmasoka and Dharmapala. This year, as done in the previous year, the tournament is being organized not just as a cricket tournament, but as a complete family fun event, making everyone in the family to enjoy a full day of fun at the Ajman Cricket Council grounds.

A concept to foster fellowship amongst old boys of Olcott Schools in Sri Lanka, started at very humble beginnings has come a long way. To organize the event this year amidst difficult economic conditions, it has taken lot of effort and hard work by many people. This year too all the eight schools, namely Ananda, Nalanda, Mahinda, Maliyadeva, Dharmarajah, Dharmasoka, Rahula, and Dharmapala Colleges are taking part in the tournament with many new features been added to the event to make it a fun filled day for the entire family. It is interesting to note that this cricket tournament is now added to the annual event calendar of Sri Lankan activities in the UAE and considered an event looked forward to by many expatriate Sri Lankans living in the UAE.

Last year, the old boys of Olcott Schools in the UAE also started actively involved in organizing a ‘seela pinkama’ at the Sri Lankan Consulate to commemorate Olcott day that falls on 17th February of every year. This event was also organized this year and now slated to become an annual event in our calendar. Olcott Old boys also taken part in the Vesak festival by distributing Dhamma books in 2011.

The organizing committee wishes to thank the sponsors for their ready support, the invitees for their presence in gracing the event and above all, the family members and all those wonderful people who helped us in no small way in organizing this event in a grand scale this year. Finally, we wish the participating teams best of luck and may the best team win.

College motto – “Apadana Sobhini Panna” – Meaning: “Wisdom beautifies character”.

At that time the Ananda playground was located in Camp-bell Place, Colombo. Next to the playground was a stretch of land about one acre in extent. Mr. P. de S. Kularathne the then principal of Ananda College leased this land and moved in some junior classes of Ananda. These first classrooms were simply mud huts! This new wing of Ananda was under the authority of Mr. E.W. Perera. Mr. Kularathne registered this off shoot of Ananda as a separate school on the 1st November 1925. The day was so chosen because it was the 39th Anniversary of Ananda and Mr. L. H. Meththananda became the first principal of Nalanda. Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maithriya was allotted the task of finding a name and a motto for this new school. He named it 'Nalanda' and chose 'Apadana Sobhini Panna' meaning 'wisdom beautifies character' as the motto. Nalandians old and new have lived up to it; and will strive to do so in future as well.
