After successfully launching our rst quarter epitome, the time has come for its second edition. I don't have words to describe my ecstasy about our accomplish-ment. Our editorial committee decided to release previous 15th year anniversary magazine to share our thoughts, knowledge, history & special moments with you. My sincere regards go to my fellows on the editorial committee, article writers, SLCS members & other contributors for their invaluable contributions. Without your eorts this beautiful magazine could never have been a reality. ank you for helping to make it possible. Also, my special thanks to readers who contributed their valuable comment for our evolution.

Life is full of dreams… no doubt about it. But how many of us managed to achieve it. Sometimes I hear people criticize themselves because of their failures to accom-plish their own aspirations. How do we achieve our dreams? Yes, it’s a million dollar question, but the solution is really childlike. You need to have a better plan. From the beginning you should have a clear idea of the nal outcome. To achieve your dream you have to work hard. When I was appointed as editor of SLCS, I desired to do something signicant. I acquired a good knowledge on previous epito-mes, standing on that I geared up my plan. en there were tons of sleepless nights, spent on reviewing other club magazines. After all preparations, I contact-ed my two editorial team members & described my thoughts. I was very lucky to have two well experienced Toastmasters to guide me. We split up our duties with great perfection. We didn’t miss out even a minor matter. At the end, we ended up with perfect 15 years anniversary magazine.

It’s been a genuine challenge to issue journey second edition in same quality. When it comes to SLCS nothing is impossible. Yet again everybody contributed without hesitation. SLCS growing day by day with young professionals We have many talented toastmasters with us. Epitome is the platform to show their talent. We try our best to give you a superlative product. Dear readers, it’s time to Dream it-Plan it & Achieve it.

Dream it, Plan it & Achieve it…. Dream it, Plan it & Achieve it….

It is a pleasure to announce, here we are launching our second Epitome for this term. After a successful publica-tion of the rst epitome we thought of releasing second and third very soon. I’m proud to say we have almost done it. Sri Lanka Club Symposium Toastmasters (SLCS) has a long history and we are a pioneering club in Bahrain. is year we celebrated our 15th anniversary and released a special epitome. at is mainly about the long successful journey of SLCS. I think maintaining standards and quality of a club are huge challenges. But I must say SLCS is progressing well, going smoothly and climbing higher its success ladder.

We always think in dierent ways. Apart from our educa-tional program, we have concentrated on public relation activities to approach nonmembers. Epitome is a one of the best ways to encourage nonmembers to become toast-masters. We always follow the guidance of Toastmaster International and share with our members and persuade others to become members. It has helped in recent times to increase the strength of our membership. Good thing is they have realized “this is a safe place to fail”. Whoever comes to this forum and if they understand the benet of it, I’m sure they will never quit. Personally I have learnt and gained lot from toastmasters, learning is an endless process. Irrespective of age, nationality or profession anyone can improve their communication and leadership skills. I think a toastmaster club is the ideal place for that. Everybody should grab this opportunity and become better communicators and leaders.

SLCS has created more opportunities to their members. My EXCO is working hard and doing their level best. I believe SLCS is like a family. Always we work together as a team to be successful. at is the secret behind our success. Furthermore the enthusiasm of our members is a huge encouragement. Our strength is their interest. At last I would like to thank each and every one for their dedication and giving opportunity to the new generation. SLCS has yet to go a long journey. We all are just passen-gers only. We have to give this steering wheel to our next generation to continue the JOURNEY as we have come over the past years. Still there are lots of people in our society who can become better leaders and communica-tors and benet from the toastmasters program.. Now it is your time. I invite you to come and join us. at’s our dream to achieve.

Can you put your hands up if you have been beaten at least once by your parents during your childhood? Ok, then those who have not beaten by your parent at any time in your child hood, please raise your hands. ank you.

One day I beat my 4 years old son because of his aggressive behaviour. I had to do that to control him on that occasion. I just slapped on his buttock and asked him to go to the bedroom. Instead, he looked at my face with full of tears in his eyes. ose tiny eyes were shining like dew drops. ose tiny eyes got connected to my eyes for few seconds, and then they talked to my heart. “Daddy, why are you beating me? I am your son, I love you so much. You are my hero in my life. Look daddy, I am small child, you are so big, your hands are so big and strong, but my hands are soft like wings of a buttery. I cannot ght against you, can beat me like anything daddy, I am sorry, forgive me daddy” My heart started to cry louder than my son. I left the Scene allow-ing him to do whatever he wanted. Most of the parents are beating their children because they want to stop the bad behavior of children or not doing the right things. ere are several reasons why it is wrong to hit children.

1. It is a criminal to hit other people So, children are also people 2. Hitting a child teaches the child that it is ok to hit another person if you are bigger and stronger. 3. Many adults are frustrated and angry when they hit the children and as a result the children learn that it is a good way to vent anger and frustration. 4. An Adult person should act with more responsibility and use their power over children in a constructive way to resolve the problem.5. Many times when an adult hits a child it is not in response to the child behavior or actions, but rather as a result of his own stress.

Because of all these reasons, whole society believes it is shame to beat children. Is it possible to discipline a child without beating him or her? Yes it is. e rst thing is for the adult to take some time to think about what is happening and he or she must apply constructive eort to get rid of the child from the situation. As adults, that is our responsibility.

Is there any specic way or method or clear rule, how to make a good child or how to discipline a child? As per my view “No”. Even though some children look alike, Children are individuals; we cannot compare one child with another. Even in the same family brothers and sisters will be dier-ent from each other. As adults we have to understand this individualism.

Dear Toastmasters, your child is your responsibility. It is your responsibility about your child’s future. In case your child is going in the wrong direction, society will not blame the schools, Teachers or doctors etc. It will come to you. You are the doctor for your child, you are the teacher for your child, and you are the hero in your child’s world. ere is a saying “necessity has no law” you have to decide whether you should or should not beat the child, if anything goes wrong beyond your control.

Issue October-December 2013

Q: Why did you join Toastmasters?A: Simple reason; self-improvement. As I grew up in the professional ladder, so as the demand grew up for me to improve my communication and leadership skills. I believe in two of the great sayings; “Practice makes you perfect” and “No shortcut to experience”.

Q: How do you cope with the challenges as the VPE?A: e role of VPE is one of the core leadership areas in Toastmaster journey. It needs careful attention and it helps us to develop our planning skills. As the VPE, you need to make sure assignments are distributed equally to all the members while focusing on achieving DCP goals. It is a tough challenge, but I believe challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. You can overcome the challenges by facing it and focusing on it.

Q: As the VPE, you have to work with other clubs. How do you nd it?A: is a real interesting thing about being the VPE. is is a good opportunity to build good relationship with other Toastmasters in various other clubs. You get a good expo-sure to share knowledge with others and others have the opportunity to learn from us.

Q: What is the main objectives of club ocers?A: I think the main objectives of club ocers are to build, improve and sustain the quality of the club. Every Toastmaster club must maintain a high quality where the members can come get real benet out of Toastmastering experience.

Q: What do you like the best about your club?A: I admire the quality and the unity of our club members.

Q: Where SLCS Toastmasters Club stands com-pared to other clubs?A: Since I have visited many clubs in the recent past; I could say that we are conducting quality meetings by following almost all guidelines given by TMI. We are trying our best to follow parliamentary procedure which I did not notice in some clubs. Also, we have proper election process, installation ceremony, PR events, and other educational events. However, we need to focus on our time management, grammatical errors, gap ller and pronunciations.

Q: We all know that lots of Toastmasters give up their TM carrier because of family commit-ments. As a veteran TM, what is your advice to them?A: First of all, I am not a veteran Toastmaster yet. I am still trying my best to reach the skies. When we join TM club, we give a promise that we will learn and grow while we will help others to learn and grow with our experience. So my advice, please keep this promise. Attending TM meeting is an investment on your own self-development. Do not consider TM as a time waster.

Q: In your TM journey, what is the most di-cult moment you came across?

A: My most dicult task was to take the rst step. Several times I decided to come to meeting as a guest, but at the last moment I gave up. With greatest diculty, I came as guest and on the same day, I was honored with a Table Topic, and it gave me condence to come on following sessions.

When tough things are being thrown at us, we should take it as another opportunity to just grow better each time and not think of it as an obstacle. Take the oyster for an exam-ple. When it`s being irritated by something, it tends to protect itself so it forms a protective layer around the irritant substance and this is how a magnicent pearl is formed. If the oyster didn’t do anything about it then, a pearl wouldn’t have been formed. Similarly with life, don’t be stunned by the obstacles that come across your path. ere will be grains of sand that will try to irritate you,

Q: Future plans?A: To complete my communication and leadership track and to become a DTM followed by the CC Manual again.

Q: Time to give credits to people behind your success?A: I think it will be unfair if I mentions any names here, but also it will be unfair, if do not mentions some names. I think Toastmastering is like a family aair. One’s success depends on others’ support. In my case, I was pushed in to Toastmastering by TM Aslam Hameed. My mentors were DTM Ahmed Rizvi, TM Mohamed Salie and late TM Chandra Liyanarachchi. First impression is the last impression and I got a good rst impression about toast-master meetings from master of ceremonies on my rst day, TM Pandula Medawatta. Overall, my gratitude to Dr. Ralph C Smedley and all Toastmasters in SLCS who have supported me in many ways.

but Don’t look at a problem in just ONE way…CHANGE your perspective and you will nd that there is more than one way to nd a solution to any problem. All you need is just a little patience and courage to go that extra mile. Instead of seeing it as a problem, see it as the reason for you to do better, to get better and to be betterTake every failure as a chance to learn and grown because in life there are no such things called ‘loses’ just ‘experiences’ which mold us into the people we are today.

Issue October-December 2013

It was my wife’s birthday and we had the dinner at TGIF overlook-ing ski-land. e next day morning I experienced a severe stomach pain and I thought it was due to all exotic food we had last night. After few days I decided to see a doctor reluctantly. e doctor in the private clinic did an ultrasound scan and suggested it is appen-dicitis.

I was in panic. Not due to the appendicitis but unavailability of healthcare insurance as I have just arrived in this foreign country for a job. e doctor was kind enough to give a recommendation to get admitted to a government hospital.

We (I and my wife) went to the emergency unit of a government hospital around 6 pm. ey put me into a bed and drew some blood for testing. While waiting for the results a young lady doctor appeared and started a conversation with me. (Later I realized she was an intern) She started asking many personal questions and suddenly popped the unthinkable question. ‘Saman, may I check your testicles? I said ‘Excuse me’! en she repeated the question. I told her that I am here for my appendicitis but she insisted that she needs to check. Finally I said yes and I saw my wife who was stand-ing nearby me running away. Doctor pulled the curtain around and the test was done. When the doctor in-charge came after a while I questioned her why that test was done. en she politely explained that the intern is doing a research on males with single testicle. Oh! Boy! Finally the doctor concluded that I need to get admitted for further testing.. But I insisted that I should go home and come with necessary gear. My wife hurriedly prepared a small bag of essen-tials and I was back at the hospital around 2:30 in the morning.

I was taken into the surgical ward in a wheel chair and a nurse gave me a hospital gown which I have never worn before. I saw that all patients were wearing the opening at back which exposed the bare back to all including female nurses. en I was thinking, all these years of my work, one thing I did was keeping my back adequately covered so that no one can point the nger at me. en I came out with an idea. During my stay in Japan, every night I wore a gown called ‘Yukata’ which is normally a night gown. It had overlapping aps in front and a clothe belt which can tie around the waist to keep them hold. I decided to wear the hospital gown like that although this gown is not designed to overlap. With some eorts I managed to pull one side over the other and used a roll of bandage as the waist belt which was available on the side table. e nurse was shocked to see me as I looked like a Japanese Ninja but I comforted her saying ‘don’t worry, this is Japanese style’. I went into sleep around 4:30am after some tests.

e next morning my wife came to see me and left after giving strict instructions that if the surgery is required I need to get it done in a private hospital.

e hospital had some janitors to take patients in wheel chairs. Around 4 pm on that day a janitor came and asked me to get down from the bed and follow him to the corridor. I said I am unable to walk as an IV line is connected to me. He turned back and immediately disconnected the IV line. I was shocked and ran to the nurses’ station and the janitor was running behind me. I showed the IV cannula to nurse and she was in a shock. en she closed the IV connector and warned the janitor. He then pushed me into the chair and started running through the corridor with me. Without exaggeration it was a F1 drive. He took sharp corners in such a speed I literally had to lean towards the oor like the Italian motor cycle champion ‘Valen-tino Rossi’ and this is where my Japanese ‘Yukata’ failed. Since the gown did not have sucient length to overlap it started ying o due to the speed exposing my dignity as I wore back to front. Now I was clinging with one hand to the armrest and holding the front of the gown with the other hand which was impossible and I was almost about to thrown away from the chair. e visitors passing by looked at me with amusement. Finally I asked him to stop and then asked him why you are pushing the chair in such a high speed and the answer explained it all. ‘Oh, my shift is over by 4.00pm and they asked me to take you to the x-ray room at the last moment. If I don’t rush my transport will leave me behind. Don’t worry I have done this many times and so far no patient had fallen from the chair. Finally he left me in front of the x-ray department and disappeared.

e Doctor took me to Ultrasound room for a scan. e doctor asked me to lie-down on the couch and squeezed a plastic bottle of gel over my tummy to start the scanning but it was empty. e doctor got angry and shouted ‘I have asked these useless fellows to keep everything ready”. Suddenly he took the gel bottle and smashed on the wall across the room with a very powerful throw and it made a loud noise. I was thinking ‘Is this the crazy fellow who is going to diagnose me?’ e doctor saw my face and comforted very kindly saying ‘Saman, don’t worry. I am not angry. Now you will see one attendant coming after hearing the sound’. As he said a fellow came running with a new bottle of gel and the scan-ning was done. e doctor delivered the bad news ‘Saman it is conrmed appendicitis and you have to undergo the surgery’.

At the ward I was asked to sign papers giving my consent for the surgery. My wife’s stern instruction echoed in my ears, but I took a decision thinking if this is the time I have to go then I have to accept it. . e nurse appeared again shortly with a shaving kit and took me into a small crammed store. en came the instruction. ‘Saman, I will close the door. You have to shave all your hair from knees to the chest’. I said ‘what?’ He smiled and said ‘Standard Procedure’ and closed the door and left. With great diculty I nished the job and almost after 45 minutes the male nurse came running and open the door.

en I was taken into the theatre and transferred to theatre table. e tall Russian surgeon with a big beard came to me and said ‘Saman, don’t worry this is a small surgery’. But I was thinking as the fellow has such a big beard what if any hair fallen into the opened cavity during the surgery. en an assistant came and connected a pulseoximeter probe to one of my ngers and shouted at the attendant as I had a ring on my nger.

Both of them were pulling the ring on my nger in such a force, I thought that the nger will come o instead of the ring. Finally I asked them to cut the ring o but the surgeon said it is not possible. en one assistant applied some gel which eventually helped to pull the ring almost after 13 years. en the anesthetist was looking for the laryngoscope but found that the blade with the light which was supposed to go in the mouth missing and she shouted at the attendant inquiring the blade. He said it was used for the earlier patient and not sterilized yet. en she said ‘there is no time now please wash it from the tap water and bring it quickly’. ose were the last words I heard. Till date I do not know whether it is anes-thesia or the last words of the anesthetist put me to sleep.

Next morning I was awakened by a pregnant nurse in the surgical ward. She asked me to sit but couldn’t due to the severe pain in the abdominal area. She tried to assist me by pulling my hands without success. en she said, ‘Saman if I try one more time I am certain that I will deliver my baby on you. Let me go and nd a male nurse’. My wife arrived during the visiting hours and was in a total shock to realize that I had undergone the surgery. After a few days I was discharged from the hospital.

Few months elapsed and I was driving through the round-about near the hospital. All cars had to stop due to the incoming trac ow. I took a good look at the hospital and saluted the building in army style. I did not see that the lady driver in the parallel lane was looking at me with confusion. I smiled at her and pointed at the hospital indicating that it was not for her but for the hospital. en she sped o.

Good Evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the health zone. HEALTH ZONE -What is it all about? Is it another dispensary? Or a health center? - NOToday we all had a complete medical checkup? Was it good? So how are you? Yes! Very nice to hear that answer - We are ne.But if you sit with somebody and ask the same question personally, the answer will not be the same.We all have something to say about our health.• High / Low Blood pressure• Diabetes• Cholesterol• Back pain, Gastritis - and more and moreIf we analyze very carefully, we can see • Most of us are suffering from one or more of these health disorders.• We do not understand that those are silent killers and if we continued without taking a remedial action, there will be a lot of suffering ahead.• We do not know that there is a way to control these problems and it is possible to have a normal life again.• And also we do not have time to bother about these things and let the life go as it goes.WHY? - We have other priorities. Our Promotions, foreign trips, Children’s education, parties, visits, trips and so on.

One of my friends told me that when his doctor said that his blood pressure is high, the whole family was shocked and even the cat and the dog of the house were involved in controlling his medicine, salt intake, change of lifestyle etc etc..But after six months, he said that even a dog was not bothered about his blood pressure.

My dear friends,Because of our lifestyle, we neglect our health requirements. We can see that most of us are trapped in an unbreakable stressful life cycle. But if there is somebody who under-stands the situation, hold our hand, take us out of this disastrous situation, educate, support and help profession-ally in our health matters. is is where health zone comes in. Health Zone was implemented rst time in Sri Lanka in 2005 and was helping thousands of people to spend happy livesall around the island. Once you stepped in, our well trained medical professionals in “ Health Zone” will

We live in a world where money is more valuable than love, revenge is more important than forgiveness, lying is safer than admitting.

Our world is not how it used to be. Society has changed severely with technology for better and for worse. To be honest, technology equals laziness. We are able to commu-nicate in so many dierent ways that now we're starting to forget how to talk in person. Well, we can't blame technology, it has made our lives a lot easier than it used to be. e reason behind all this is the misusing of develop-ments.I myself, I agree that I misuse my devices a lot as well. Most of my time is consumed because of this. Human nature is about love and care, it's true that we do love and care. But whom do we love and care? People nowadays prefer their belongings over their beloved ones. e value of human existence has been lost and I hope that someday people will realize that their doing.

A benecial change needs to be brought up. is is where the confusion is born, people often wait for someone else to start something so they can follow that person. Unfor-tunately, everyone thinks alike. Basically, we've all been waiting for someone to start a change and sadly nothing has happened until now.

My suggestion is...Why wait for someone to start some-thing? Why can't you? Waiting for someone to lead us will never happen unless we ourselves make a change in ourselves. So think about yourself rst and then make your choice. We're all dierent and we have our own paths, our own ways, our own rules. You make a choice that will benet You!Never envy others, instead, be happy for them. Remem-ber...If you're planning to take revenge on someone, Karma is looking at you. As you know...What goes up...must come down.Sacrice your time for the ones you love, because they can't live forever. Death takes place during the most unex-pected times.I hope that one day, people will truly understand each other. A world with no jealousy or war. A world with love and aection is what we require for human existence to carry on.

A CHANGE IS ALL WE NEED!
