Sree Narayana College, Kollam Science Club Activities, 2018-2019 (Science for the People, and the People for Science) By P Nikhil Chandra (Club Coordinator, Asst. Prof. in Chemistry) The need to improve the science and technology skills and knowledge of students, especially from science stream is of great significance. It is therefore important for them to be provided a solid foundation based on scientific understanding and awareness. The science club of S.N. college, Kollam is keen to make sufficient activities to promote interest, understanding and knowledge in science activities among students along with developing interest in science and to develop skills in field work, research and project presentation. The activities of the club were formally started with its official inauguration by Dr.B.Sinilal (Asst. Prof. in Botany, FMN College, Kollam) on 13/2/2109 at Chemistry seminar hall. The program was preside over by our principal Dr.Anitha Sankar. Dr. V.L.Puspha (HoD, Chemistry) and Dr.S.V.Manoj (IQAC Coordinator) with Kumari Sarangi of BSc Physiscs also delivered felicitation for the programme. Our club member Mr. Srijith S (Asst. Prof. in Physics) commented the vote of thanks to all for all students for their active participation. Dr. B.Sinilal delivered a lecture on ‘Importance of research in science field’, which was highly appreciated by the club members. Mr. Gokul of 1 st MSc Chemistry and Kumari Sarangi of 3 rd DC Physics were selected as club leaders for this year.

Science club actively celebrate National Science Day, which was celebrated in India on 28February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V.Raman on 28 February 1928. We celebrated the special occasion on two days, 27 and 28February 2019 for the beneficiary of science students. An invited talk regarding “Biologicalcatalysis” was delivered by Dr.R.Prakash Chandran (HoD, Chemistry, NSS College, Kottiyam)on 27/03/2019. An open discussion was led by Mr.Prijith Jacob Thomas (UGC-Librarian,FMNC, Kollam) in the topic “Indian mythology in modern science” on the same day. All thestudents actively participated in the discussion session and commented their views.

Science club is keen on disseminating science knowledge among students through competitions.Club celebrated Science Day by organizing various competitions for college students. Weconducted intercollegiate science quiz competition in association with Energy conservationclub of this college. About 23 teams participated in preliminary quiz round and only 5 teamsqualified for second round. Students from M.G. College (Devanarayanan S. and Athulya K.R., 1MSc Physics) bags 1st prize. Jereem (3 DC Botany) and Akhil (3 DC English) of our college wonsecond prize. A paper presentation competition and essay writing competitions were alsoconducted along with quiz. Darshana Prakash (1 MSc Chemistry) and Aswin M (2 MScChemistry) won 1st and 2nd prizes respectively. About 25 students of our college participated foressay writing with topic “Science and Technology for a sustainable future”. Kumari

Drisyakrishna T.S. (1st DC botany) won first prize while second prize won by Mr.NandakrishnaR of 1st MSc Botany of our college.
