The McKay-Dymek OR-22 Receiver A Preproduct ion Review

H. JOE?: i.LIF.',EP;TS

A f t e r reading Bob Foxworth's review o f the McKay-Oymek DR-22 (Vol 44 # 14

2-7-77), I thought DXers might be i n t e res ted i n a review o f one o f the

prototypes which George McKay brought t o a Southern C a l i f o r n i a DXers

meeting some t ime ago f o r us t o look a t . This meeting has been t r a d i t i o n a l l y

he ld i n a downtown motel and i s somewhat noisy. For antennas, we used a

Dymek amp l i f i ed whip and a 50' quickee longwire. Overal l , I would say I

was q u i t e pleased w i t h it. I n judg ing a r ece i ve r I consider the f o l l ow ing

fac tors w i t h importance i n the order l i s t e d : f r o n t end i m u n i t y , selectivit:!,

readout, and conveniences. I usua l l y ignore s e n s i t i v i t y s ince i t i s so eas i l y

obtained. I t ' s on ly when there i s too much o r t oo l i t t l e t h a t you need t o

be concerned about i t . Front end i n ~ u n i t y ( t h e a b i l i t y t o w i ths tand over loading

from s t rong s igna ls ) , t o me, i s the most impor tant s ince s e l e c t i v i t y and

readout a re worthless i f your f r o n t end i s clobbered and f i l l e d w i t h

garbage f r cx 50 kw l oca l s . Good s e l e c t i v i t y i s a must, bu t if the f r o n t

end c a n ' t take it, then you c a n ' t l i s t e n c lose t o powerhouses which i s

one p lace where you need s e l e c t i v i t y . S i m i l a r l y , good readout amounts t o

a frill i f you are hearing two adjacent s t a t i ons . Bear i n mind t h a t I am

reviewing t h i s r ece i ve r w i t h h i gh performance BCB OXing i n mind-not casual

l i s t e n i n g o r OXing on shortwave.

SYNTHESIZED TUNING

The f i r s t t h i n g t h a t h i t s you when you t u r n i t on i s the b i g LED readouts. As

I remember, they were about 3/4" h igh and you can read them 10 ' away.

(The rea.?out on the R-390A i s on l y L" h igh) . The tun ing i s exce l l en t bu t

takes some g e t t i n g used to. If you are n o t used t o d i g i t a l readout, i t can

be awkward a t f i r s t , bu t once you are used t o it, i t i s r e a l l y nice.

Synthesized tun ing has been i n d is favor by those i n the know due t o t h e i r

experience w i t h the m i l i t a r y R-1051. This p a r t i c u l a r rece iver requ i res

two hands t o t u r n the knobs because o f the h i gh torque requ i red and makes

DXing very t i r i n g very qu i ck l y . The OR-22, though, had a v e r l y l i g h t touch

and al lows z ipp ing around the band as some DXers are prone t o do. One

of the n i ce features t h a t r e s u l t s from synthesized tun ing i s t h a t the BCB

band i s no t broken i n t o two bands l i k e i t i s on the R-390A and SPR-4. It

i s such an annoyance t o have t o change bands when you reach 1000 khz and

then retune down t o 1000 khz t o cont inue where you l e f t of f . Also because

of the h igh IF , there i s no prese lec tor t o tune. Synthesized t un ing can

make f o r fas ter tuning. Turning a knob one p o s i t i o n can pu t the rece i ve r

from 550 khz t o 1550 kh.2 i n L, second. Try t h a t on your R-390A o r SPR-4.

On the otherhand, t un i ng from 995 t o 1000 khz requ i res t u rn i ng 4 knobs. 7 The DXer who plans h i s DX and knows where and when he w i l l l i s t e n w i l l f i n d

the DR-22 a great help, whereas the DXer who j u s t scans up and down t he

I band w i l l pay a s l i g h t penalty. For example, going from 790 t o 800 khz,

the DXer w i l l t u rn the "9" t o "0" which w i l l pu t the rece iver on 700 khz.

Then he w i l l t u rn the "7" t o "8" p u t t i n g the rece i ve r on 800 khz. Soing

from 790 t o 700 t o 800 khz can be a b i t confusing a t f i r s t , bu t t he LEOS

t e l l you exact ly where you are. I feel t h a t in termedia te and advanced

DXers w i l l r e a l l y go f o r synthesized tuning, b u t beginning DXers may f i n d

i t somewhat o f a hassle.

SENSITIVITY

From the connnents I hear, most OXers t h i n k t he publ ished s e n s i t i v i t v o f 2.5

uv i s t e r r i b l e s ince the SPR-4 has a s e n s i t i v i t y of 1 uv. Any OXer who

I knows hos s tu f f w i l l t e l l you t h a t as long as the s e n s i t i v i t y i s below 5uv,

knowing how t o OX and knowing where and when t o l i s t e n i s vas t l y more

important than t h a t ex t r a m i c rovo l t o f s e n s i t i v i t y . Remember the R-388 has

a s e n s i t i v i t y of 15 uv ( ! ) and the R-390A has a s e n s i t i v i t y of 3 uv and you

know how good they are. My R-390A was measured b.v a Swan engineer as having

1 uv s e n s i t i v i t y from 500 khz t o 30 mhz. Although you can t e l l the d i f f e rence ,

i t c a n ' t hear anything my R-388 cna ' t . 2.5 uv i s mre than adequate and a t the

motel we were l i s t e n i n g t o WliVB-60 khz coming t h r u the power l i n e noise.

FRONT EN0 IMMUNITY & SELECTIVITY

Here i n the Los Angeles area, I have some quick t es t s t h a t I run on every

r ece i ve r t h a t I use. If they pass, they are i n the good t o exce l l en t category.

If they don ' t , they a r e n ' t worth bother ing w i t h f o r ser ious DXing purposes.

The f i r s t i s t o tune i n XEMMM-800 i n Tijuana, Yexico. KABC-799 (5 kw), which

Puts i n a Potent s igna l , produced l i t t l e s l op and no cross-mod as I would

I. expect from a good q u a l i t y rece iver . (NOTE: I used the 4khz f i l t e r . The

8khz f i l t e r i s worthless f o r 0Xing.J The next i s t o tune t o 990 and 1000kh.z.

KNX-1070 (50 kw) and XEPRS-1090 (150 KW) can bother recept ion of 1050.

Ear ly i n t h i s per iod , both t he author and Ebb Fofiorth noted zhat the be s t recept ions of t h i s a t u t i on could be had during b ~ r i o d s of moderately a c t i ve geo- moc~,ctic condi t ions , o r unse t t l ed conditions. The s t a t i s t i c s , f o r the most pa r t , bear out t h i s observation. I n perusin4 the loggings repor ted , no e f f o r t was made t o evalu- a t e the recept ions q u a l i t a t i v e l y on the b a s i s of audio q u a l i t y o r s i gna l s t rength . The Frcsence of a d iscernable s i e n a l was deemed t o be su f f i c i en t .

I n a 1 a r ~ e number o: the chses, the index of geomagnetic a c t i v i t y , A , showed val - ues of 10 o r more. I n an Even 1;cri:c.r number of cases , t he averare off!he va lues of

The :%?lest inc!ex recorded during t h z t m r i o d was u sxa l l y 18 o r more. 11; a major i ty of the recept iocs , a t l e s t one, and usurilly t*lo o r t h r ee of these f i gu re s were i n gen- e r a l agreement a s t o being :~!:ove the previously-described levels . I n i s o l a t e d ins tances , a l l t h r ee va lues were below 10.

These f i nd inc s a r e not genera l ly su rp r i s i ng , however, with the exception of the l a t - t e r statement. Other comments of note inc lude one made by s eve ra l DX'ers, t h a t recept ions of Urumchi tend t o p a r a l l e l recept ions of Vinni tsa , Ukraine on 1%6 kHz. Vinnis ta is one of the more nor ther ly of the European TA's, and fu r t he r da t a on recept ions of it would be r e - qui red before any co r r e l a t i ons of any meaningful na ture could be drawn. A s would be expocted under unse t t l ed or moderately a c t i ve geomagnetic condi t ions , many DX'ers noted t h a t Urumchi recept ions d id not tend t o coincide with good T A conditions.

The f indings d e t a i l l e d above do no t , however, shed any l i g h t on t he propagation mode responsib le f o r the Urumchi receptions. Logging da t a supplied by a number of the in- d iv iduals r epo r t i ng these r ecep t i ons d s o do not provide any subs tant ive information Many r ecep t i ons were noted with no bearings a t all, while t he ranpe of those bearings which were repor ted var ied from 0' t o pO. Given t he range of rece iv ing loca t ions , t h i s range is p r e t t y much acceptable f o r a Trans-Polar path, a s opposed t o ore u t i l i - zing an ionospheric tilt (chordal mode), which might be expected t o y i e ld a lower range of bearings. There is, a s was noted i n the o r i g i n a l Tram-Polar DX a r t i c l e , a paucity of information on the subjec t o ther than of a t heo re t i c a l nature. We know t h a t the phenomenon e x i s t s , and t h a t under c e r t a i n condi t ions s i gna l s may be propa- gated by it. There has been, t o da te , no information a s t o t he c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of the bearings of such s ignals .

WLLE, whose programs are oriented to the black community. would be forced off the air if the FCC decides to revoke the license.

A year ago. FCC administrative law judge Ernest Nash ordered WLLE to pay a 610,WO fineafter ruling that it falsely billed advertisers in violation of commission rules. However, the FCC's Broadcast Bu- reau contended that the fine was not a Strong enough sanction and appealed to the full commission to takeaway the license.

The commission heard arguments in the case Thursday, during which a represenb- tive of WLLE ownership admitted "rpe

According to John T. Kelly, a Broadcast Bureau legal counsel. WLLE billed 120 ad- vertisers for [email protected] worth of commercials that were never broadcast and also en- gaged in double-billing of theGulf Oil COT. These practices took place in the period 1971.73, he said.

A central issue in the arguments before the commission was how responsible should Wallace Hankin, principal owner of WLLE Inc.. be held for theimproper billing practices. In calling for license revocation. Kelly charged that Hankin "failed grossly to supervise the employes of the stalion."

Hankin hired James H. Dulaney to be general manager of the radio slation. The administrative law judge found thal Dula- ney had pressured another employe. Bar- bara Daughtry, who handled program logs. into preparing false infornabon about vbetber commerc!als had actually been

Following the oral arguments, eommib sion members went into closed session to give instructions on the preparation of an order in the WLLE case to the staff. A final FCC ruling is anticipated in threedo four months.
