The chapter submitted the paperwork for the Chapter of the Year competition. We worked really hard all year and can be proud for what we accomplished during 2010. Thank you all for helping to get the paperwork finished. The package was sent out in time to the ADD responsible for the tallying the points. At least we know we have honorable mention at the Florida District Convention closing ceremonies. At the Florida District Convention, FL1-W signed up for volunteering to help at the registration table on Friday, March 18. The hours are 1:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you can volunteer, please see Patti. Paul and Diane – 1-3 p.m. Jim Gorski - 3-6 p.m.
(1) Volunteer Needed – 3-6 p.m. James and Patti – 1-6 p.m. Thank you for volunteering. Just in case you don’t know it, this is a volunteer organization. Everything that is done is by volunteers helping to make it the best. Are you interested in volunteering and keeping FL1-W alive? You don’t have to take on a large task, anything you can help with or interject is important to FL1-W. It helps to have more to volunteer and spread the “wealth” around. You might even say that you being at a Chapter Gathering each month is volunteering your time to help show support. What about the rides that are put together for the chapter? When you show up at a ride, you are stating how you appreciate and enjoy what the chapter is doing to get us all together to ride. So we ask you think about how you can make FL1-W more active. This is your chapter and anything you do is better than nothing!
The ride to FL1-H Multi-Chapter Breakfast on January 22 was a lot of FUN! They were blessed to have a large group in that small building. They had so many game prizes, it was AWESOME!
James and I managed to win four prizes. Look for most of them in the Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast as our donation. Yes, we go to win the prizes and then donate the biggest portion of the winnings back to the chapter. It is FUN to play. Thank you FL1-H for a good time! At the breakfast, I passed out flyers while James went on the stage to pitch our upcoming Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast on April 16. We hope to have as many or more
to visit with us in April. This is a time when volunteering to help the chapter will really be appreciated and the more that volunteer to help at our event, the easier it will be. The breakfast is from 10-2 p.m. The chapter is there at 8 a.m. and out by 3 p.m. This breakfast helps to off-set the funds that are needed to run our chapter. Since we do not take in any dues, we need this breakfast to help support the chapter for the year. The lunch ride to Yellow Dog Eats in Gotha on January 25 was a nice turnout and we managed to beat the storms. Kevin, Kevin’s friend Stan, and Gary Hoop were on bikes. Jim & Marilyn, James, and Carolyn came in their cars. The food was great and laughter was over the top. What a great time.
We had a GREAT turnout for our Social Dinner Ride to Kelly’s Brickhouse Pub in Clermont on February 2. We want to welcome Dennis and Sharon Lewis from Sorrento. Also in attendance was James, Patti, Jim, Marilyn, Ted, Carolyn, Dick, Sue and Kevin. The food was great and we had an even
better time. At 3 p.m. on February 5, a group went on a ride to Terranova’s Pizza and something about mobsters. They all went in vehicles because it was raining and had no sign of letting up for a little while. More on that later. On February 5, FL1-H2 had a huge turnout for their Chapter Gathering. Many chapters were visiting and getting those extra bonus points for chapter visitation. Jim and Marilyn helped us to bring in extra points for the chapter. Thank you FL1-H2 for a good time.

We had lots of fun last month and I see we have some good plans for the next month too. FL1-W is always looking for great places to eat, rides to take, or great destinations. Hopefully you will see something here that you will want to participate. FL1-W is always looking for new roads and new destinations. Please feel free to share those ideas with any of your staff. We love new ideas! There is a Tire Kick planned for next Wednesday, February 16 at 6:30 at Pastavinos. This is the little Italian cafe at the end of Rock Springs Road near Kelly Park. They have great food and one of Apopka's finest! Then there will be a ride to the Navy Seal Museum on Saturday, February 26 with KSU at 9:00 a.m. from the Apopka Post Office. This ride will be going to the Navy Seal Museum in Ft. Pierce. This is a bigger ride and will take us three hours to ride down to the museum. You will need to bring your toll road transponder if you have one. This will be a great ride and a great destination! We can't wait! Check out the FL1-W website and click on Calendar/Events. This is what the website says: Road Captain is Kevin. This will be a long day. 3 hrs down, 3 hrs back, 2 hrs there, and a lunch stop somewhere. However, this is a fascinating little place. http://www.navysealmuseum.com/
The next Wednesday, March 2 the Tire Kick will be at Patsio's Diner in Casselberry on Rt. 436. They have great family food and we will meet at the restaurant at 6:30 p.m. Daytona Bike Week is from the March 4 through March 13 this year. There will be lots of bikes on the roadways. We need to be extra careful as we drive and ride. And, I think the Plant City Strawberry Festival is from March 3 through March 13. These are just some events that are happening around our area to consider. Pull them up on the web for details. FL1-W will be joining FL1-H2 for a Tire Kick at Bob Evans in Casselberry on March 9. But this Tire Kick will be at 6:00 p.m. rather than our normal 6:30 p.m. Who doesn't love Bob Evans? Maybe the best biscuits around and don't even get me started on the pumpkin bread! The Florida District Convention is coming up on March 17 through March 19. The Radisson Worldgate in Kissimmee hosts our rally. We are so lucky it is in our backyard. If you've never been to one you will find lots of vendors, classes, competitions, games, food, and a bike light parade. FL1-W will be helping to stuff registration packets for this event on March 11 at the Perkins on University at 6:00 p.m. We will eat at 5:00 p.m. before clearing off the tables to stuff the registration envelopes. Come out if you are able. It sounds like we have a pretty good line-up for the next month. FL1-W looks forward to meeting old friends and new. Hope to see you soon.

Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge
Are we having FUN yet? As we ponder the expression
that has been adopted as our organization’s motto –
“Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge” – we are
frequently reminded that the primary emphasis as GWRRA
members and chapter participants is to have FUN!
How do we define FUN? What do we do that we
consider FUN? Let’s skip a lengthy discourse on what
“FUN” means and just consider that “FUN” is the by-
product of that thing (or those things) that we enjoy
doing. And, if we enjoy doing something enough, we can
usually find opportunities to indulge in our passions. For
most of us, one of these fun things has to be motorcycles!
Let’s face it; that is the common ground that brings us
together as GWRRA members.
Take a look around you the next time you are at a
gathering or some other event where participants are
decked out in full regalia. Check out the pins, patches,
and badges that adorn the vests of fellow chapter
participants. Especially look at the colored-in maps of
states visited and the Safe Miles pins. Do you realize that
there are those among us who have accumulated over
75,000 or 100,000 safe miles ridden? (I have even seen a
350,000 mile pin!) That is incredible! How can anyone ride
a motorcycle that many miles and not have “FUN” doing
it. I’m not sure you can! Ya gotta love it!

We all have commitments in life and unfortunately for us, Lance & Elise
Lowery’s commitments have taken some of their time away from FL1-W and
the Rider Ed’s needs. They have done such an outstanding job, we will have
some big shoes to fill. I am Kevin Lang and my wife is Claire; we are your
new Chapter Educators.
The three founding tenets of GWRRA are Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Even
though we all enjoy the FUN, the other two tenets are just as important. After
all, we would like to keep each of our members around for as long as possible.
And, that is where Rider Education comes in. The non-formal side of Rider
Education is just the tips and tricks we get from fellow riders. The formal side
starts with the Levels Program.
The Levels Program starts with Level 1 which is just a commitment to
Safety. For those that are not in the Levels Program, please let me know of
your interest and commitment to safety and we’ll get you started. You can
progress through the levels if you want or you can stay at Level 1, the choice
is yours. But, we should all be committed to safe riding.
We look forward to the future and hopefully meeting your rider education
needs. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or training
needs.

Remember, you should carry
contact emergency information, along with medications and allergies,
readily accessible. Is your First Aid kit in your trunk? If
it’s in a saddle bag, you might not be able to get to it. Also, always carry your cell phone on your person, in a jacket pocket or on your belt in the event you get separated from your bike in an emergency
situation, you can still call for help.

One month of 2011 has come and gone! We now
have approximately 6 weeks until the March District Convention. We hope you are making plans to attend this year's event the 17th - 19th at the Radisson WorldGate Resort in beautiful Kissimmee! We promise to entertain and train you and to follow Rule #1 in Florida "Have FUN”! You'll also have a wonderful line up of Vendors to purchase bling and necessary "safety" chrome! As for the theme, you can go online to get more details of what an Old Time Rendezvous is at:
http://www.floridafrontiersmen.org. January was a very busy month starting with the
Chapter Conference. We would like to thank all of you who attended this important event. Also, thank you to our District Team. Without your support and help, this event would not have been possible. This event fulfilled the business portion of GWRRA by recertifying our Officers and installing the Treasurers and MEC personnel as newly appointed Officers. We also had a number of CDs and ACD appointments. Congratulations to all. It's folks like you who volunteer your time and energy to make our association a good one...who make Chapter Life a FUN place for friends, who share a common interest of motorcycling, to participate!
The District website is a place where you can find the most current and up-to-date information about what's happening in our state. Our Webmaster, Howie Taylor of FL1-L2, has done and continues to do an excellent job with our website. Thanks, Howie! If you've visited our website, you should have noticed some pictures "flashing" across the page. We'd like to change things a bit and each month have different pictures of folks following Rule #1 of Having FUN! Submit pictures of your Chapter following Rule #1 to us and we will pick up to 10 pictures from all the submissions to post on the District website. No more than 5 pictures per Chapter per month can be submitted as we would like a variety of pictures from a number of Chapters each month and throughout the year.
Bill and Gina Berry, Florida District Directors
(Complete article can be read at
http://fla.gwrra-regiona.org/newsletter.html)
We thank each chapter member who accepted an officers’ appointment to either MEC or Treasurer for their service to their chapter and to GWRRA. We know how hard you work and believe you deserve this designation. Another important program that was launched at each of the officer meetings is the mailing of Retention Letters to those GWRRA members who have been in the Association for 1-3 years and who are expiring within the next quarter. A study of the demographics of those members who are expiring show that most of them have been members for 1 to 3 years, and that is why that group was targeted to receive the letters. The letters are simple to do; they come in a preprinted format and are mail-merged with an Excel spread sheet. So far, each District has the program up and running or is about to. It is only done on a quarterly basis and does not involve cold-calling expiring members. The members are directed to the appropriate District Director in the letter, if they wish to speak to someone about their status. We hope that between continuing to personally contact the new members and sending these retention letters to a targeted group of expiring members that we can have a significant impact on our declining membership numbers. Thanks so much for your hard work in both these endeavors.
We look forward to seeing you at a GWRRA event soon,
Bob & Nan, Region “A” Directors

February, 2011 ..................... GWRRA FL1-Wings .............................. Page 11 Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge
Being safe while motorcycle driving, is one of the key attributes of GWRRA. Continuing that safe mind set while driving automobiles or other various forms of personal transportation is a basic fundamental of responsible driving. Focusing on safety during foul weather in Florida is no exception. Most of us make the safe decision to drive in our personal automobiles to participate in Chapter functions. For the past four years, our Chapter Ride Educators Lance and Élise Lowery have led our participating Chapter members on many awesome rides via some wondrous routes. Lance and Élise Lowery have truly been hardworking participating members of GWRRA and our FL1-W Chapter. Their dedication to safety and fun should have earned them a Rider Education Merit Award. During the Master’s Breakfast at Wing Ding 32, I kept my fingers and heart crossed that we would hear their name announced in recognition of their performance and outstanding service to GWRRA and FL1-W. Regardless, Lance, Élise and the other members of FL1-W ride for the true enjoyment of the ride. We all have a belief of no boundaries on driving or riding wondrous routes is also a good mind set to possess.
Just recently, due to foul Florida weather, we had to ride in our four wheel vehicles during a planned FL1-W Chapter ‘mystery ride’ – although while we were in our automobiles, the planned ‘route’ Lance and Élise selected was entirely enjoyable. Many times, when Kevin and I are traveling in the automobile along a beautiful scenic road, we frequently comment about how awesome that particular route would be on the ‘Wing’. Last week while we were visiting with Kevin’s brother Jeff in upper Virginia, Jeff drove us along the picturesque George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Georgetown Parkway. The recent snow fall covered the ground and winter vegetation with beautiful white wet snow. While the driving that particular day was not safe for motorcycle riding, the route was wondrous – one Kevin and I are planning to ride one day on the Gold Wing.
Be safe and enjoy the ride. Claire Lang, GWRRA #247828
