EDUCATION REPORT Bob & Charlotte Goerlich
The summer ended with three very suc- cessful dances. I'm sure that all of the new dancers enjoyed dancing with new people and different callers. We hope that a lot of you have registered for the Con- vention for a really wonderful experience.
Attention: All callers and cuers who have classes, please contact us and let us know how many people you have in your class. We will have books for them. Call us at 215-887-2153 between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
PUBLICITY
Publicity, like charity, begins at home. The more we dance in public, the more people will see us and become interested in our pastime. The mall demonstrations, parades and visits to nursing homes lets the public know we are in existence. Newspaper articles covering our ac- tivities, sure help a lot too.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS Lee & Jan McDermott
Bruce & Barbara Brown
It is now time to start thinking about membership for 1989. The packets con- taining all of the information for our Mem- bership Drive will be given out at the September 11th District Meeting to be held at Perkasie Fire Hall. It is important that your club be represented at this meeting so that you may receive your packet.
For your annual fee you will receive the Squares & Rounds magazine mailed to you every other month. This gives you all the information going on in your District and also special events elsewhere. You are also entitled to free dances in the summer.
Don't forget the Membership Dance on November 6th, 2:00-5:00 p.m., at Benner Hall, Richlandtown. This dance is free with your 1989 membership. Let's have a large turnout and get the membership off to a great start!

THANK YOU FOR CARING
I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to my many square dancing friends for their prayers, telephone calls and get well wishes during my hospital stay.
Square dancing is truly friendship set to music. Thank you again for caring.
Rill !Ann! la!
We are again at the threshold of new activities and enjoyment when we look forward to good things and good times. Now we must remember those people we have been inviting to join us in Square Dancing. September is Square Dance Month and it is also the month that most classes begin. So give that friend, rela- tive, co-worker and/or acq uaintance a nudge, call, letter or whatever and get things rolling for a great time this sea- son

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Bill & Erma Molin
In order to successfully continue to pro- vide an outstanding Convention each year, the Federation of the Delaware Valley Square & Round Dancers must have volunteers to serve as Convention Chairmen. The guidelines set up by the Federation require that the Chairman be:
an active square and/or round dancer and must be a member in good standing of the Federation of the Delaware Valley Square & Round Dancers".
There are many such dancers in our Federation with additional qualifications because of their service with previous conventions, club and district operations, or because of their occupational back- ground. These are the people we need to hear from voluntarily. To properly plan and prepare for a Convention, leadership should be established two years prior to the actual Convention. Submitting your resume for consideration by the Conven- tion Advisory Committee is not an ego- tistical act, but an offer to your Federa- tion to help keep the continuity of our Conventions.
Perhaps you know someone whom you think would serve well in such a capacity and with whom you would be willing to work as a part of their committee. Why not speak tolhem now -- offer _your ser- vices and urge them to submit a resume or letter to the Chairman of your district.
There is an immediate need for a Chair- man for 1990.

The following are just a few tips con- cerning fabric.
First and foremost, it's a good idea to wash and dry all fabrics before using them. This will take out extra finishes that dull your cutting shears. This procedure also shows the fabric's washability as well as shrinkage (better to find out first, be- fore sewing).
To avoid puckered edges in some fa- brics -- cut away your selvage edges.
Before buying fabric measure how much yardage your different style skirts, bodices, blouses, and sleeves are going to take. Also, keep a purse-size booklet with all of these yardages written down and keep a sample swatch of each fabric you use.
Try tr) miirr‘hmcia fabrics that are per- , , manent press. An excellent combination is 65% dacron with 35% cotton. 100% dacron or nylon may be wrinkle resistant, but it is very warm and can be very un- comfortable in humid weather.

TOUCH SOMEONE SQUARE DANCE
Legacy
Each Square Dance Month theme for September has been established and promoted by Legacy now for a number of years.
This year's theme is "Touch Someone — Square Dance", which borrows a phrase from a popular commercial slo- gan. How appropriate this is, since the most basic movement of square dancing is touching. Touching is universal. Touch- ing is the essence of friendship.
In order for club publicity people to do a better job promoting classes and inter- preting square dancing to the general public, a Promo-Kit is offered again for the third consecutive year. The kit is free ex- cept for postage and contains a dozen pages of ideas, tips and resources, along
with a poster which depicts the 1988 theme of "Touching"
Order your copy (or copies) of the kit for $1.25 each to cover postage/handling from Square Dance Month Chairman, P.O. Box 488, Huron, OH 44839. Checks should be made payable to: ASD.

D.V.S. & R.D. FEDERATION MEETING UPDATE
Bill & Erma Malin
The first meeting of the 1988-89 fiscal year of the Delaware Valley Square & Round Dance Federation was held on June 9, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Washington, PA and hosted by the Mid-East Penn District. John & Mary Ellen Lachenmayer, newly elected Presidents of the Federation, presided.
The following new Committee Chair- men were announced: Education, Paul & Evelyn Lofurno; Membership, Clarence & Juanita Dye; Publicity, Bill & Erma Malin; Property, Ron & Mary Weiss; Coordina- tor/Calendar of Events, Aaron & Rose Silverstein; Insurance, Roger & Marion Owings; Legacy, George & Angie Green- acre; Liaison with Square Dance Coun- cil of N.J., Burris & Meryl PIL:mmer; Ad. visory Committee, Mitch & Carin Cytacki; Wildwood Weekend, Doug Vollmer; and Showcase of Ideas, Joe & Betty Mather.
Reports were made by each District Chairman showing membership totals of: 964 - rvilid-EaSi Penn District; 1,194 - Pen- Del District; 545 - Bucks-Trenton District; and 413 - Penn-Jersey District.
Roger Owings requested that all danc- ers covered by the insurance program be made aware of the proper procedures in case of an accident. The first person to be notified, if a claim is being made, should be the Insurance Chairman of the individual's club. That person will then ad-
vise what steps should be taken to file a claim.
John Lachenmayer reported that the Wildwood Weekend was a success and presented the Treasurer with a check in the amount of $1,172.00, plus a refund of the $500.00 advance made by the Federation. The 1989 Wildwood Week- end dates are April 28, 29, & 30.
Jim Howatt, reporting for the Square Dance Council of N.J., said there were 1,900 dancers in attendance at the 1988 Convention. The date for 1989's Conven- tion will be April 1.
Definite boundaries have been agreed upon by the District Chairmen to clarify each District's area. By vote of the Board, these boundaries were accepted as out- lined. New clubs are urged to join the District in which they are located. Existing clubs are not affected by this vote. Boun- dary definitions are available by request to your District.
A discussion was held on the need for and/or the purpose of having a Public Relations Chairman. Further study will be given to this proposal and a report made at a later date.
A proposal to hire the callers and cuers for our Conventions for more than one year at a time was introduced. After dis cussion, it was voted to refer this sugges- tion to the Convention Advisory Commit- tee for further consideration and recom- mendation.
The next Federation meeting will be held on September 8, 1988.

MID-EAST PENN DISTRICT
The Mid-East Penn District is compos- ed of square and round dancers. Approx- imately 964 dancers belong to 46 clubs within our District. Our District covers a large territory. Scranton-Easton. Reading. King of Prussia, the Roxboro section of Philadelphia and many communities in between. Each club should have a repre- sentative to attend the four scheduled meetings each year (January, March, September, November) so they may keep their club informed. We are presently meeting in the Perkasie Fire Hall as it is the most central point that would allow all clubs to have a representative present without having to travel too far. Ail four meetings are open to all dancers. We en- courage you to attend and voice your opi- nion or ask questions.
The District exists for the purpose of keeping our clubs informed of Federation activities, distributing educational mate- rial, publishing Squares & Rounds maga-
zine, scheduling free summer dances, sponsoring an annual benefit dance, making your needs and desires known to the Federation and assisting dancers in any way possible. We also have a Special Events Calendar, which we sincerely desire all clubs to utilize so that none of uuI clui)s will schedule an event III C0111-
petition with another. In that way, we can all take advantage of any and all special events.
Behind it all is you, the dancer without whom there would be no need for a Club, District or Federation.

GROUND RULES FOR BANNER STEALING
1) A banner may be captured at any regularly scheduled club dance by a visiting club haOing two or more squares present.
2) All visitors must be registered in the guest book and must be wearing their club badges.
3) Couples who belong to more than one club cannot represent one club and steal a banner from another to which they belong.
4) A club may steal a banner or re- trieve a banner on a club visit but not both at once. It takes a visit to steal and a visit to retrieve.
5) When there is more than one visit- ing club having at least two squares present, the club that has at least two squares registered first in the host clubs guest book is entitled to the banner. (This is to prevent discrimination against small clubs.)
6) in the event that the host club's banner has already been captured and is not available, the host club shall give the visiting club a raincheck. As soon as con- venient after they recapture their own banner, they must deliver it to the club holding the raincheck. If two squares ac- company the banner, it may be taken home again from that same dance. Other- wise, it must be recaptured according to Rule #7.
7) A banner may be recaptured at any of the next three scheduled dances of the captor club by two squares or by one square if beyond the three scheduled dance time limit. After ten scheduled dances, the banner may be recaptured by any one or more couples visiting the cap- tor club.
8) A banner may be captured only one time (by the same club) within a dancing year (September to September).
9) A club is allowed to have a travel- ing banner which must be a reasonable facsimile of the master banner.
10) A club having a traveling banner will er while_the_
traveling one is in the possession of another club.
11) The capturing club agrees to exer- cise good care of the captive banner and.
to have it available at the dance when the members of its club come to take it home.
12) Any club not wishing to partici- pate in banner stealing should make this known to the District Secretary, and it will be duly noted in the club news section of the district publication.

JUST THE FACTS! Legacy
Many times club presidents and callers are contacted by representatives of the local media and asked for more informa- tion about square dancing. It was sug- gested to the Square Dance Month Chairmen of Legacy that a press release should be circulated that would provide some information to answer the usual questions about square dancing. Here goes:
Who square dances? Square dance participants include people of all ages, from small children to nonagenarians; all walks of life; all nationalities and races; all phases of health, from those who can walk confidently to those in wheelchairs; all mental capabilities, from those in chal- lenge clubs to the special steppers. Square dancing is open to anyone who wishes to participate.
What is square dancing? Square dan- cing is the name given to the activity which encompasses dancing in square formations, contra dancing in long lines, round dancing (couple dancing in spe- cific patterns) and, in some areas, clog- ging.
Square dancing is eight people moving to music and following the commands of a caller. It's good exercise. It brings peo- ple together for fun and fellowship, re- lieves stress and tension and creates friendships.
When does square dancing take place? In cities, square dancing might be found any evening. In smaller towns, square dancing may only be available on weekenriq, nIthriligh where towns are clustered, clubs will endeavor not to com- pete on the same night.
Where do square dances take place? Many towns and cities across our nation now have square dance halls built by clubs and federations for the enjoyment of their own activity. In many other places, square dancing in enjoyed in churches, schools, gyms, social halls, malls...where- ever there is ample room. Wood floors are best, always During summer, many square dances are held outdoors.
Why do people square dance? We mentioned some of those reasons under "what". Another reason that couples enter the activity is that they can square dance together, rather than participating in separate hobbies. Others are attracted by the fact that square dancers have an agreement not to partake of alcohol be- fore or during a dance. A dancer feels confident that the others in the square are working together to complete the calls for the maximum enjoyment of all.
How does one get into square danc- ing? September is designated Square Dance Month, and classes usually begin at this time of year. In some areas, class- es are started in January. For most club square dancing, it is necessary to take basic lessons.
Many areas have a program called Community Square Dancing, which non- dancers may attend.
The above answers are very general. Local information needs to be added, which should be available from your local publications. Historical information is available from several sources, includ- ing Hoedown Heritage from American Squaredance Magazine and The History of Square Dancing Handbook from the Lloyd Shaw Foundation.
Places to dance, either locally or when travelling, are listed in the National Square Dance Directory, which annually lists over 10,000 square dance clubs.
The answers above also have been geared to club square dancing. In many areas, traditional square dancing is avail- able and open to those who wish to dance only occasionally and those who enjoy its flavor and rhythms.
Know your local area and resources. Know your callers. If you can't answer a question about square dancing, know where you can look for an answer. Hap- py promoting!
