Ten couples from the DVS&RD Feder-ation represented the United States at the Worlds Expo in Seville, Spain in June.

This is the first time square dancers have been invited to perform at the World Expo. Our group performed six 45-minute dance sessions over three days at the U.S. Pavillion.

Square dancing calls are done in the English language throughout the world. Even though there was a language bar-rier, we were received with much en-thusiasm by the many attendees at the Pavillion.

After three days of performing, we were able to do some sightseeing in the area. Included in our agenda were visits to the world's largest cathedral located in Seville; LaAlhambra in Granada; and the Cathedral and Episcopal Palace in Cor-doba.

The 20 participants were: Tom & Emily Kovacevich (caller and wife), Gary & Bar-bara Boyd, Bruce & Barbara Brown, Winifred Dryden, William & Joan Flick, John & Marianne Ortals, Ernest & Frances Axton, Charles & Ruth Peter-son, William Rosenzweig, Frank & Irene Vaul, and Fran & Maxine Waegel.

The experience was rewarding and something we all would be willing to do again.

GATEWAY TO KNOWLEDGE

While at the 42nd National Convention in St. Louis don't miss an opportunity to improve your knowledge by attending the Showcase of Ideas; a Seminar, Panel or Clinic all being hosted by the Education Committee.

Seminars will be hosted by know-ledgeable persons from Callerlab, Roun-dalab, Contralab, Legacy and other na-tional leaders. The planned Panels will enlighten you as to how things are be-ing done in other areas of the country. You may be able to incorporate some of

thses ideas in your area. The Clinics will allow you to see and try some dance steps, movements, or st yling that are new to you. A few minutes in one of these clinics may increase your enjoy-ment of dancing for many )(ears to come.

The Showcase of Ideas will be an area that you won't want to miss. There will be displays from many square dance organizations from around the world tell-ing about their various activities. Also, the Publication Area will display various square dance related publications from around the world. Be sure -to allow a cou-ple of hours to visit all the displays in these areas.

"Gateway to Knowledge" activities will by occuring throughout the conven-tion. Don't miss them or you will be miss-ing a sure bet to improve your enjoyment of the square dance movement.

Our class meets every Thursday night with Jim Snyder teaching.

As you read this, our club is very busy preparing for our 30th Anniversary Din-ner Dance to be held on March 20 at the Maria Assunta Lodge in Pottstown, PA. This promises to be a memorable event, with an afternoon dance, dinner and dancing in the evening. Maria Assunta Lodge does not permit selling tickets at the door, so all tickets must be pur-chased in advance. Come out and help us celebrate our "Pearl" anniversary! (See our ad elsewhere in this issue for all the details.)

++++++++++ TUMBLEWEEDS: Join us on January

5, 8:30 p.m., at the Salem United Church of Christ, 186 E. Court St., Doylestown, PA for our Mainstream and Plus Work-shop. Our Club Dance is on the third Tuesday of the month.

Our Valentine Dance will be held on February 16, where we will be celebrat-ing the birthdays in February along with special entertainment and refreshments.

Remember to attend the Mid-East Penn's Halfway Dance on January 16, 8:00 p.m., at the Church-On-The-Mall in Plymouth Meeting, PA.

++++++++++ YELLOW ROCKERS: We hope every-

one had a happy holiday. We enjoyed our Anniversary Dance and our Wine and Cheese Party following the dance. We are anxiously awaiting the camping sea-son to start, which is only about two months away.

with paramedics and an EMT on hand during the Convention.

All registered young people may march with The Youth of America" group in the Parade, if they wish. A youth is classified as a person under the age of 19. No adult dancing will be allowed in the Youth halls.

226 callers and 100 cuers have already been signed to call and cue at the Con-vention.

Plans are being made to have shuttle buses pick up dancers at many Park and Ride areas, if enough bus passes are sold to people not staying at the desig-nated hotels.

The Missouri Restaurant Association will provide an informational booklet to dancers listing various dining facilities. They will also man a booth to help with dinner reservations and questions.

Security will be around-the-clock at the Campgrounds. Security measures are being planned at Cervantes Convention Center.

Bid information on sounding the 42nd

National Convention is being mailed to those who "made their intention to bid".

Two bid sessions (1997 and 1998) are being planned for Friday, along with the cities who state an "intent to bid".

The Parade of States will be indoors on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. After the Parade, the 1997 and 1998 National Conventions will be awarded.

Proper square dance attire for men and ladies is required in order to enter the Cervantes Convention Center after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and at all times on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Prai-rie skirts are acceptable attire for the ladies.

PENNSYLVANIA SQUARE AND ROUND DANCE FEDERATION

by Bob & Charlotte Goerlich

Currently, 738 license plates have been issued. If you have a square dance plate, it is necessary for you to retain your membership in the state federation.

Total membership for 1991-92 is 2,917. A lifetime membership fee of $20.00 per square dancer was passed. Those not wishing to purchase a lifetime member- ship may buy as many years as they desire at $1.00 per year. A dot will be issued showing the year on which their membership expires.

A new state outfit will be considered from models presented at the next meet- ing in May. However, the present outfit will be in effect through 1994. After that, a minimum of five years will be estab- lished before another outfit can be con- sidered.

A trip to Alaska on June 10, 1993 aboard the Holland American ship "Nor- dam" is planned. Tom Miller will be the caller. Flyers are available now.

A new motion was passed to sponsor an annual State Convention. Candidates for General Chairmen of the Convention should submit their resumes to PSRDF Presidents, Bill & Joan Flick, by January 1, 1993 for review by the Convention Advisory Board.

THE QUIET ENDEAVOR

by Roy & Marion Goerlich

Whenever square dancing is present, whether it's a private obscure church or school hall or in a parade, the presence is well noted by the spirited music and fancy dress.

What is not known is the willingness of square dancers to perform at nursing homes, retirement homes and benefits. Many dancing clubs give much of their time in these endeavors and two of these greatest affairs are the Penn-Del Dis- trict's "Dance To See" and the Mid-East Penn District's "Dance for the Friends of th Hndi— - -- "ea CIJIJV .

These two districts are members of the Federation of Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancers and over the past 20 years of so the Penn-Del District's "Dance To See" has raised close to $50,000.00 to benefit the blind. The Mid- East Penn District's "Dance for the Friends of the Handicapped" has been on of the organizations major supporters and in the last decade has contributed nearly $30,000.00.

These two districts were awarded a special plaque at the Federation's 31st Convention on Saturday evening, Sep- tember 19, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cherry Hill Hyatt in Cherry Hill, NJ for their special endeavors.

RUTHIE'S SEWING BASKET

by Ruth McLay

Weren't the holidays lovely? It's such a wonderful time of the year. Everyone is in a festive mood, with a kind word for all. Scurrying here and there trying to make everything right for that special day.

Now that things have settled down, let's talk about a new year that has just come upon us - 1993! Where did 1992 go? Many good memories, I trust.

Hopefully you are ready for some new sewing ideas. I will try not to repeat any- thing, but sometimes requests are there.

Some of our square dance outfits are leaning toward the western style. Check the pattern books in your favorite fabric store. These styles can be made by using the western kerchiefs on skirts and necks (wherever you choose to use them). Come up with your own ideas. Match your partners shirt and tie.

Of course, the usual attire is always popular, so choose a good basic style for you and your partner. Make changes 1-iere and th-ere - neckline, civerskirts, etc,.

Don't be afraid to change the man's shirt pattern too. Go fancy or tone down. Most of all, be original and fit your garments well. If you feel good in your outfits, you'll enjoy your dancing. Also, keep up with the latest calls.

Here's to Happy Dancing! See you next issue!

FEDERATION'S EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

by Elaine M. Wasekanes

As we begin the third year of the Emer-gency Preparedness Program, I would like to thank all of you who have taken the time to care and use your Emergency

Preparedness packets. To those of you who haven't used your packets yet, now is an excellent time to start. The few minutes it takes to review and use these packets may just save a life!

Just a few reminders. Find out where the nearest telephone is and make sure it's working. Know what your local emer-gency telephone numbers are, (does 911 work in your area, it is the quickest way to obtain emergency help).. If there is not a telephone available, form an alternate emergency plan. Get an Emergency Coordinator for your club, make sure they are familiar with the emergency pre-paredness packet. And lastly, post the Emergency Call for Medical Aid (ECMA) signs at all dances and workshops. Make sure all club members, stu dents, callers and cuers are familiar with this program.

The Federation of DVS& RD would like to make sure that your district, your spe-cial dance, your classes and your club are ready to handle an emergency. Take the time to be prepared. Remember life is to precious for what ifs! !!

DIXIE DERBY'S MAINSTREAM PROGRAM

Dixie Derby's mainstream class got off to a very good start with more than 50 new dancers attending the opening Jam- boree. Almost double that number of club members showed up to help get the new class started. Enthusiasm for the DBD approach to the Mainstream Pro- gram is running very high among Dixies.

Classes continue every Tuesday, 6:00- 10:00 p.m., at Upper Moreland Middle School, Orangemans Rd. (north of By- berry Rd.) in Hatboro, PA with caller, Glenn Matthew as caller/teacher. The class fee is $3.00 per person.

Glenn is introducing several new teaching techniques to aid the new dancers and is encouraging them to tape record the class sessions. They can use

the practice tapes between classes. Dixie Derby's regular Mainstream

dances, held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, now begin at 7:15 p.m. with Country-Western Dance instruction. Square dancing starts at 8:00 p.m. followed by an enjoyable evening of square dancing tips alternating with country-western dancing.

The first session of Country-Western Dancing was held on September 26. A large turnout for the program indicated a strong interest among square dancers in learning this popular dance style.

Dances are usually held at Lehman Avenue Church, corner of Lehman Ave. and York Rd. in Hatboro, PA.

The Square Dance Council of New Jersey is proud to present a true conven- tion. That means your favorite local callers, cuers and leaders will be work- ing to keep your toes tapping. The New Jersey Convention is especially suitable for students, new dancers and main- stream and plus dancers.

An awesome feature is the Parade of Clubs at 7:00 p.m. At least 1,500 massed, marching dancers is a sight (and feeling) never to be forgotten.

Trenton State College is centrally located just off 1-95 in Ewing, NJ. There is plenty of free parking and space for self-contained RV's. The cafeteria at the Student Center will be open to serve the huge dancer appetite, or you can visit one of the local restaurants.

Register will Bill & Donna Anderson, 215 Potter Ave., Staten Island, NY 10314; 718-727-5141, right away and get a dis- count. Watch for flyers at your local clubs or call me at 609-924-7545. Additional information can be obtained from the General Chairmen, Frank & Jean Rivic- cio at 718-356-5323.

AMERICAN CALLER'S ASSOCIATION

The American Caller's Association (ACA) is a newly formed professional organization for the modern western square dance caller. With the advent of the BMI/ASCAP licensing requirement, many callers throughout the United States have indicated a desire to have an alternative organization that could provide the required license. The ACA is just that! An organization that can pro- vide you with a BMI/ASCAP group li- cense while keeping the costs to a mini- mum. The ACA is founded by callers who have many, many years of experi- ence in the square dance industry, both locally and nationally.

Why an alternative? History has prov- en when alternatives are not offered, bureaucracy and complacency usually sets in. In many cases when only a single choice is available all the positive and beneficial aspects for which the pro- fessional organization was originally

esfablished, are greatly diminished and the good of a few suddenly out weigh the good of the activity.

We, at ACA, hope to provide you, the caller. a forum with other profession-als in your field with whom ideas can be formed, information can be shared, opinions can be voiced and together we can find methods to benefit square danc-ing as a whole.

Further, we, at ACA, welcome com-ments from individual dancers, clubs and dancer associations. It is with your input that together we can keep this wonderful activity alive and growing.

ACA's initial efforts will be spent in providing inexpensive BMI/ASCAP group licensing. As we grow the poten-tial is unlimited. If you, as a caller, or as an individual, club or organization desire more information or choose to join us in this new venture, please feel free to contact us: American Caller's Asso-ciation, Inc., P.O. Box 2406, Muscle Shoals, AL 35662.

31ST DVS&RD CONVENTION

by Roy & Marion Goerlich

The enthusiasm and friendliness of the dancers at the 31st DVS&RD Con- vention was contagious. Many new grad- uates were delighted as they partici- pated. The avalanche of Yellow Rocks engulfed everyone.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who assisted in making our 500th Birthday Party a great celebration. Special thanks to Ron & Dottie Smith, Chairmen for their fine endeavor.

It is sad to say goodbye to everyone we worked with and those we met and talked to at the convention - 'til we meet again - Happy Dancing!

32ND DVS&RD CONVENTION "COME FLY WITH ME"

by Darrell & Dottie Lewis

Flying in a hot air balloon is an ad- venture like no other and one that has changed little in the last 200 years.

Philadelphia was the site of the first hot air balloon launch in the United States. Imagine this... in the very area where we will launch the "Come Fly With Me" 32nd Delaware Valley Convention. Our Hot Air Balloon Pilots - callers: Tim Crawford, Bill Harrison, Steve Kopman, Jim Lee, Tom Miller, Kevin Robinson, Joe Saltel, and cuers: Rod & Susan Anderson, Carmen & Mildred Smarrelli, and Steve & Judy Storm will guide you through all levels of dancing.

Our committee is presently nestled in the gondola basket preparing for the launching of "Come Fly With Me" at the Cherry Hill Hyatt, Cherry Hill, NJ, Sep- tember 16-18, 1993.

For further information, contact Clar- ence & Juanita Dye (Registration), 215- 565-2867 or call us at 215-459-4416.
