FALL2010 Jewish values guide and enrich the JCC.

Underlying the JCCs vitality are coreJewish tenets transcending generations, epitomized by the story of Abraham andSarahs tent. In the story, Abraham so

values welcoming guests that heinterrupts G-d to greet three strangers, invite them in and offer refreshment.

The JCC strives to build a culture thatincorporates this Biblical philosophy, welcoming each person entering ourfacilities. Focused on what transpires

every day inside our tent, the JCCaspires to be a center of learning, joy, growth and respect for diversityregardless of how or whether one

    worships.

    HOLIDAYS ANDCELEBRATIONS

    Shabbat

Shabbat is observed from sundownFriday until the appearance of threestars in the sky on Saturday night.Shabbat is primarily a day of rest andspiritual enrichment, a time to set aside

our concerns and devote ourselves to

higher pursuits. To sanctify the Sabbath,we say a blessing over wine and eat aspecial braided egg bread, challah.

Shabbat is welcomed every Friday withcelebrations by the Early ChildhoodDevelopment Center, Clubhouse and

    AgeWells Independent Adult ServicesDepartment.

    Rosh HashanahSeptember 9-10

    Begins at sundown, September 8

    Rosh Hashanah, which marks the

beginning of the Jewish year, is a timefor serious introspection. According totradition, G-d writes our name in theBook of Life and decides who will live

and who will die, who will have a goodlife and who will have a bad life, for the

following year. We eat apples andhoney in the hope that we will have a

    sweet year.

    Yom KippurSeptember 18

    Begins at sundown, September 17

The Day of Atonement is the most

important day of the Jewish calendar. Itis dedicated to fasting, reflection, prayerand penitence. Traditionally it isbelieved to be the last opportunity to

seek forgiveness from those we havewronged during the past year.

SukkotShemini Atzeret, Simchat TorahSeptember 23-October 1

Holy days begin at sundown on

    September 22 and September 29

Sukkot is a time to celebrate the harvest.

In honor of the workers who lived in thefields, we build a sukkah, a three-sidedtemporary booth that has no real roof or

doors. We decorate it with branches, fruits and vegetables. We eat, study, playand sometimes sleep in our sukkahduring the holiday. We remember that

when the Jewish people wandered inthe desert after they were freed fromslavery in Egypt, they built sukkot forshade and rest.

Sukkot lasts for eight days. The last twodays are called Shemini Atzeret andSimchat Torah. Each year in the

synagogue, we read the Torah from startto finish. Simchat Torah marks the daywe finish reading the last section of theTorah and begin reading the first section

    over again.

The JCC sukkah is built in the Levinson

Patio and decorated by staff and ECDCand Clubhouse children.

Chanukah: Begins at sundown,December 1This eight-day holiday commemoratesthe victory in the second century B.C.E.of Judah Maccabee over Syrian KingAntiochus, who tried impose Greek

religion on the people of Israel. Whenthe Maccabees prevailed, they entered

the desecrated Temple and found anuntainted jar of oil sufficient to light the

Temple lamp for only one day. But amiracle occurred, and that small amountof oil lasted for eight days. To commem-orate that miracle, we light a Chanukah

menorah for eight nights and eat foodscooked in oil.

Fighting the Fires of Hate:America and the Nazi BookBurnings

Organized by the United StatesHolocaust Memorial Museum, theexhibition is presented in collaborationbetween the AJM and the Holocaust

Center of the Jewish Federation of

Greater Pittsburgh. In 1933, German students supported by

the Nazi party attempted to burn allworks they deemed Un-German.Targeted authors included BertoltBrecht, Helen Keller, Ernest Hemingway,

Sigmund Freud, and Karl Marx. As freeexpression was consigned to the fire, the flames foreshadowed future Naziatrocities.

This breach of fundamental democraticvalues was enough to elicit a responsefrom Americans, long before they

entered World War II. Even duringwartime, condemnation of bookburnings was a rallying point against theNazis.

Nearly eighty years later, the Nazi bookburning legacy continues as extremistgroups ban and burn literature such as

the Harry Potter series and KurtVonneguts Slaughterhouse Five.

    Employing artifacts, newsreel footage,

documents, video, and other forms ofmultimedia, the expansive exhibitionexplores the book burnings, Americasimmediate reaction, the burnings role in

the American war effort, and thecontemporary discourse on censorship.
