D ear Friends, I wonder what you think of this tragic story which I read
in “The UCB Word for Today” Bible notes written by Bob and Debby Gass for Good Friday 2016?
Two Questions. “Is it nothing to you all you that pass by?” Lamentations 1 verse 12 John Griffin who controlled a railway drawbridge over the Mississippi River took his young son to work with him one day. After putting the massive drawbridge up, Griffin was eating his lunch when suddenly he heard the whistle of the Memphis Express roaring towards the crossing. Leaping up from the observation deck, he ran to throw the control switch. Glancing down, his heart stopped! His son had fallen into the gears trapping his leg in the cogs. Desperately he tried to devise a rescue plan, but there was no time. His son was down there – but there were four hundred passengers on the train! Griffin knew what he had to do. Burying his face in his arm, he pushed the master switch just in time to lower the bridge into place as the train thundered across. Then raising his head he looked into the passing windows with tear-filled eyes. There were businessmen casually reading the newspaper, ladies sipping coffee and children eating ice cream. Nobody even looked at the control house or glanced down at the great gearbox. In agony Griffin cried out, “I sacrificed my son for you people. Don’t you care?” But as the train rushed by nobody heard the anguished father’s words. On this Good Friday as we consider the cross where God sacrificed His Son for each of us,
He’s asking: “Is it nothing to you all you who pass by?” The question then becomes: “What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” [Mathew 27, 22]. There is only one right answer to that question: “Today, I accept You as my Saviour and my Lord.” *
It made the “hairs stand up on the back of my neck” and the thought of it gave me much anguish and yet Good Friday is the day when we remember God the Father giving His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us all on the Cross. Each time we sin in thought, word or deed or by omitting to do what we should do, we cause a break up in our relationship with God who is all holy. However, He loves us so much that only Jesus’ great sacrifice could and can reinstate us in that special relationship with God. Jesus never committed any sin, so He was the only one who could possibly do that great task. This is what we need to stop and think about each time we’re tempted to sin and disobey God. God’s wonderful gift of new life extends even further to include not just His particular help and guidance in this life, but the promise of new life in His everlasting Kingdom. The events of that first Easter Day ensure that. In rising from death, Jesus showed once and for all that nothing, not even death can separate us from God’s love and we need to hang on to this tremendous hope, because it does keep us going especially when days ahead may look bleak at first. “The story is told of a nine year old boy named Philip who suffered with Down’s syndrome. In Sunday school the other
4
children made fun of him because he was different. The Sunday before Easter, the teacher gave each of the children a plastic egg and asked them to look for symbols of new life, like seeds and leaves and then place them inside the egg. The idea was to open their eggs on Easter Sunday and discuss what they had found. When the children had gathered, they had collected all sorts of things like flowers, butterflies and rocks. But when the teacher opened Philip’s egg it was empty. One child said, “That’s not fair, he didn’t do it right!” But Philip tugged at the teacher’s sleeve and said. “I did do it right. It’s empty because the tomb is empty. That’s why we have new life.” The class gasped – and from then on Philip rose to a new level of respect and became part of the group.” *
As we move forward through the final days of Lent towards Holy Week and the events of that last journey of Jesus to Jerusalem, events which happened so long ago and yet are utterly relevant to today, we listen again to the words, the music and the prayers and we examine different aspects of those families and stories. Something we have never considered before or something which strikes us suddenly may spring to mind. Just why did the disciples fall asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane? Why did Judas betray Jesus? Why were the religious leaders so very worried about Jesus and the influence he might be having on people? How would we feel if Jesus washed our feet? Could those same events happen
today if Jesus were physically on this earth now? The questions are endless.
Another way of enabling ourselves to understand the significance of all the events, is to imagine a particular scene and then to picture ourselves as part of it – feelings, emotions and thoughts. Perhaps we imagine ourselves at the Last Supper or waiting with Peter in the courtyard outside while Jesus is questioned. Maybe we experience the darkness as Jesus dies or the desolation of the women as they approach the tomb early on that first Easter morning and then as they see the stone rolled away! Are we doubting like Thomas because we had missed seeing Jesus with the other disciples or thrilled like Peter to have been forgiven for denying his Lord and Master? Hopefully, the services on offer will help us to journey through events and to celebrate the Risen Christ on Easter Day. Events are planned for children, too. Everyone is welcome. All our churches will change from being quiet and sombre for Holy Week to being bathed with bright Easter flowers to welcome the Risen Christ. Please join us.
“Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions.

Still I’ll rise.
You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may tread me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries.

April Gardening
There is still time for Snowdrops to be moved ‘in the green’. Dig up a clump, gently ease the bulbs apart returning some to the original area and the others to new ground. Aconites can also be moved in the same way. Early and second early potatoes should be going in . Plant main crop potatoes by the end of the month. Finish planting Shallot and Onion sets. Keep an eye on your Dahlia tubers for signs of a shoot. Take cuttings and carefully pot them up. In the case of very big tubers, you can often take a sharp knife and get several separate cuttings with part of the tuber attached. Protect from late frosts and, when you finally put them out, from slugs who love them! Remove faded Daffodil and Tulip flowers as they go over but don’t cut off the leaves – just leave them to die back. Germander Speedwell

BAYFORD PARISH COUNCIL.
Diversiongate. You will be aware of the problems caused by the diversion of all traffic up Bayford Lane due to the closure of Brickendon Lane, to facilitate repairs to the retaining wall of the brook. There were several accidents and several parishioner were abused. Contacting anyone at Herts Highways who could put a stop to this, took more than a week and involved listening to several hours of awful music whilst ‘holding on’. It seems that the diversion was authorised without anyone looking at Bayford Lane! I admit, there is no suitable alternative to Brickendon Lane. This, together with the fact that the duration was about six weeks, should have effected how the roadworks were carried out. The water ‘leak’ across the road behind the Baker Arms has been taken up by Ringway (the contractors to Herts Highways) and I am hopeful that something will at last be done about this. James Vine at Ringway was very helpful. Thanks to Cllr. Ken Crofton for putting me in touch. Ken has also contacted Herts Highways with a view to assessing the viability of 40mph zones in the Parish. I will take the opportunity to ask about signs to deter HGVs from using Buck’s Alley as well as the state of this road. Weight Restriction Zones. My next mission will be to try to get someone to enforce the ‘7.5 tonnes weight limit access only’ rules. At present these are disregarded by many (all?) lorry drivers and enforced by no one.
As we begin a new Parish Council year, I would like to thank all councillors for their work throughout this year, and also The Clerk, Maggie who fortunately reminds us of what we should be doing and assembles all the planning and financial information for our consideration. Thanks are also due to Bill Brace, David Sitwell and Neal and Elaine and to all parishioners who have given their time this year to keep Bayford the special place it is.
Parish Council meetings are held on Mondays at 8pm in the Memorial Hall. Next meetings: 5th June, 3rd July, 4th September, 20th November. Michael Wainwright (Dr), Chairman, Bayford Parish Council. [email protected], 01707 875970.

Mission Action Plan
A Mission Action Plan has been described as a bit like a map. When we set out on a journey to somewhere unfamiliar, it is helpful to have an idea of how we might get there. Our Church as all Churches, has been asked to set out a mission action plan to make choices to set out a clear vision of the way forward.
A few of the ideas discussed with particular focus on making our Church more welcoming to our community. Making more of special occasions during our regular services. Mothering Sunday Inviting the tiny tots (held every Monday morning) to come to Church
with their mums to help us make the service a little bit more special. Anniversaries Those who have been Married or Christened in our Church perhaps
would like to come to a service on the first anniversary of their special day.
Coffee Mornings Open the Church and all would be welcome but perhaps focus on asking
those in the village who cannot get out much so would and enjoy some company over a coffee (or tea).
Regular Opening of the Church. We have lots of walkers for instance who pass by and try to see if the Church is open.

Hertford Bypass Gets Go Ahead.
Several Villages, Including Bayford, Will Be Effected. From our Transport Correspondent, Aprilia Uno.
T he Hertford bypass, so long talked about, is set to go ahead, with work starting in April of
2018. Several villages on the south and west side of Hertford will be effected. A spokesman for Herts Highways insisted the scheme will be sustainable, reduce pollution and create many jobs in the area. The press release stated; ‘There will be a gift shop, a visitor centre and new children’s playground. We will have a grand opening when there will be a Flanagan and Alan singing competition on the village green.’
T he Revd. Red Cheshire, vicar of All Saints’ Church, Hertford, stated: 'The construction of
Gascoigne Way involved the removal of a number of graves from the churchyard and ever since that time,
parishioners have seen apparitions wandering about on Gascoigne Way, looking for their former resting places'. We hope the graveyard will now be restored to it’s former tranquillity.
D r Michael Wainwright, who has been Chairman of Bayford Parish Council for over a 100
years, and an all round good chap, commented ‘We will, of course, oppose this application. This is after all a conservation area. You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.' Neal Austin, local resident, is enthusiastically in favour. He had the roof blown off his house in the recent gales. ‘Now I won’t have to repair the roof, as my house will be under the viaduct.’

Essendon WI Update.
December 2016 was our Annual Christmas Party and we were all entertained by the singing duo 'Two's Company' before we all partook of a wonderful tasty buffet and Christmas gifts were distributed.
January 2017 - the speakers were members of 'Blue Watch' from Welwyn Garden City Fire Station - it was a very interesting talk ranging from women in the fire brigade to the training time to become a fire officer - information was also given regarding the home visits that the fire brigade undertake to check our fire safety - they can be contacted for this free service on 01707 345500
February 2017 - our speaker was Linda Rutherford who gave a very interesting talk on the craft of Needle Felting - this is a reasonably cheap hobby to learn and the members were amazed at the animals and human figures that could be made using sheep’s wool
The March 2017 The speaker was Alex Coles who gave a talk on 'The Silk Route'
April 2017 meeting will be held on 19th April in the Village Hall at 7.45 for 8pm and the speaker will be Richard Bull from Highfield Park trust in St Albans who will be explaining the work of the trust Kathryn Gray
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO LISTEN TO CHILDREN READ IN LOCAL PRIMARY
SCHOOLS
Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers in Hertfordshire and Essex to carry out this important role. Reading time for many children at home and at school is often insufficient and one in four children are now leaving primary school unable to read to the required standard. This can have a lifelong consequence. No qualifications are necessary, just a good command of spoken and written English.
Schoolreaders is flexible and will match your availability to an appropriate, local school. Our volunteers find the scheme incredibly rewarding, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life chances. Please visit the website www.schoolreaders.org to join or call 01234 924111 for further information.

Dog Lovers Wanted! Would you like the company of a dog, but can’t commit to full time ownership? If you’re at home during the day, have a secure garden, and no dog of your own (or one friendly dog), you could join us as a carer and earn some additional income, looking after dogs in your home while their owners are away. Previous experience of dog ownership required.
