SWIM COURSE Ocean Swim Prep

The Swim Course is an Ocean swim and is fun for all competitors. There are a few things to keep in mind when swimming in the ocean:

• Swim Start – Beach Start – seed yourself according to ability. If you’re not a super strong swimmer position yourself in the back and let strong swimmers enter the water after the bull horn sounds.

• Waves – It is the ocean and there will likely be 100 yards of break water that you’ll need to manage to get to the first turn buoy. How do you handle swimming through waves?

o Duck!– When waves approach, it’s easier to duck under the waves versus jump through or over them. Breast Stroke when under a wave and prepare for the next series of swells.

• Sighting – Use the buoys to sight early and often so you do not go off course. When swimming parallel to shore, look toward Gooseberry Island where the Run Course is laid out. You’ll see a series of White Colored houses. Use this as your sighting point.

• Breathing – The waves will be breaking on your RIGHT side, so if you’re not a bilateral breather, be prepared to have some swells hit your face.

• Swim Exit - Time your exit along with the waves, to help push you back to shore. This is what makes ocean swimming a lot fun, you’re a kid again body surfing back to shore!

Bike Course Fontaine Bridge As you drive to the race site, you’ll pass over the beautiful Fontaine Bridge, which is roughly 1 mile from the race site. There are some amazing views of the Bay! This is the same bridge you’ll pass on the Bike Course. When crossing this bridge during the Race, you MUST:

• SLOW your speed considerably. • Use the defined bike lane to cross the grates

(which will be covered for safe travel) • Do not pass other bikers when approaching the

grates

We know that everyone will follow these rules, making for a safe race, however race officials will penalize any violators.

Transition Area Setup & Rules Organization There is one entrance and one exit in the TA and they will be clearly marked. The only people allowed in the TA are race participants and Max RDs. The TA opens at 7:00 and closes at 8:45 for Announcements near the Registration Tent. Each row is marked with signs that designate the race numbers that correspond to that row, e.g. sign #s 17-33 equates to Race Numbers 17-33. You must rack your bike in the row that corresponds to your race number. Give yourself some room since we’re bringing more racks then participating athletes, so you’ll have room next to you. [specific directions on bike placement is described under High tech Bike Racks in this packet] Rules The following rules will be in effect and closely enforced to ensure organization, safety and security:

• Only athletes who are body-marked are allowed in the TA • Your bike frame # and Bib # must be affixed accordingly • You must walk or run your bike into and out the TA. You

are not allowed to ride your bike in the TA. • You are discouraged from removing your bike once it’s in the

TA until the bike portion of the race. This helps reduce some of the TA chaos from frequent entry & exit prior to race start.

• Mounting and dismounting your bike must occur in the designated/marked areas outside the TA.

• You will be able to take your bike and gear from the TA after the last racer has started the run portion of the race.

Signs Clearly marked signs and mini-arches will be in place:

• Swim/Run In | Bike Out | Bike In | Run Out

Skull Caps and Swim booties are permitted. Wearing 2 swim caps is also allowed. USAT does not allow for gloves to be worn.

Transition Zero

Max Bike Racks Don’t look for those heavy metal poles that make the TA crowded and clumsy. We’ve purchased state-of-the-art racks that you’ll appreciate once you know a few guidelines on their use. Bike Rack Placement

• Only the rear tire gets mounted in the slot farthest away from where you’re standing • Each rack holds 8 bikes; alternate placement – you’re on 1-side, next racer on the other

side • Your front cassette should be on the small chain ring for increased stability and entry/exit

speed • Mountain Bikes need a PVC adapter– see a Max person in the Transition

Area. Place your other race gear (towel, sneakers, etc.) to the right of your front wheel See picture in appendix for an example and our YouTube video at http://www.youtube.com/user/maxperformancetri

Race Numbers

There will be three (3) race #s in your race packet that all racers are required to display during the event: 1. Run Bib Number – must be displayed the Run segment on the front of your body (not your back).

Fasten your Run Number using a race belt or using safety pins provided to you in your Race Packet. It’s recommended to also be displayed while on the bike portion of the race, but not required.

2. Bicycle Frame Number – must be attached so the number is visible from both sides of the bike. 3. Helmet Number – a small peel-and-stick

number must be worn on the front of your helmet.

Reminder: Bike and Helmet Numbers MUST be affixed prior to entering the Transition Area. Thanks!

Left Ankle

Chip Timing System You must use the chip provided to you in your Race Packet. You may not use your own chip. Please fasten the chip to your ankle (left ankle is recommended so it doesn’t touch your bike chain ring while riding) and check to make sure it is secure prior to race start. Split times will be recorded by the timing company at each race segment. Note that the Finish Line clock will reflect the race start time. This time will not be your exact time due to different start times for different race waves (see page 18). Volunteers will be will be collecting the timing chip from you at the Finish Line. Non-returned chips result in a $50 fee.

Triathlon Start & Swim Waves Warm-up

There will likely be warm-up swimming allowed only at the Swim Exit, prior to 8:30. All racers must be out of the water by 8:30. Meeting will occur at 8:45 near the White Registration Tent.

Swim Check-in and Start After the Pre-race Meeting inside Transition, we will walk together as a group down to the Swim Start. Swimmers will be cued up by wave (cap color) – look for your colored sign, held by our wonderful volunteers. Each wave will cross the timing mat and spread out along the edge of the water the water. This is a Beach Start. A Max Race Director starts each wave with a count down. Water shoes or swim socks are permitted.

Swim Course The swim course is a point-to-point ocean beginning near the north bath house at Horseneck Beach. You will start the race on the beach and swim to a buoy approx 200 yards from shore. Make a left at this swim buoy and follow parallel to shore. You will be swimming past the breakwater to reach the first buoy. At the final yellow buoy, you will make a Left turn and sight for the large finish arch on the beach. Swim Exit: In the Style of Escape from Alcatraz there is approx ¼ Mile run/walk back to the transition area. Another pair of sneakers or sandals are allowed to be placed at the edge of the beach. Race Staff are not responsible for the recovery of these shoes. ***Experiencing trouble during the swim? – it happens, safety is the primary concern - there will be other races! Please be very conservative in this regard. If you cannot continue during the swim, wave your hands in the air or yell for one of the safety boats to pick you up. Or, swim to shore. Notify a Max RD immediately upon exit. Medical safety prohibits you from doing the bike or run portion of the race.

Swim Waves All racers will receive a colored swim cap at the time of registration that corresponds with a swim wave. You must wear this cap for participation in the event.

Max Performance reserves the right to alter the Swim Course related to weather, current and overall swim conditions. This has been the

case in years past to provide a safer and better swim event for athletes.

Spectator Information Spectators will be fortunate to watch the Triathlon right onsite! Many spectators are right on the beach for the Swim Start/Finish, then move to the Parking Lot where Bikers and Runners will be moving out of the park! The Finish line is set right in the middle of all the action….under Max’s Rustic Finish Arch! ***Important***: Spectators SHOULD arrive with athletes. After 9:00, park staff will limit entrance into the park, as cyclists will be travelling along the course. Bring your cowbells, noise makers, posters and spirit to cheer the athletes on! Share in the post-race celebration too. Get your kids cheering and shaking their cowbells, but please keep a close watch on them. If your children bring bikes, make sure they have

helmets too. Please keep in mind that spectators are not allowed to provide any assistance to athletes since it may result in disqualifications. There are lots of Max Race Directors and Volunteers around who will be glad to help anyone you ask. And remember, safety is our top concern. So, there may be times we need to provide directions to spectators to ensure clear or unobstructed paths. Most importantly, we appreciate your support and cooperation in making this day fun for all!

Charitable Partners

Race Day Assistance It’s easy – we’re wearing shirts & jackets with Max Performance logo or Event Staff on it. Police and EMS staff will also be at the race if an emergency arises.

Weather Policy Reminder Knocking on wood while we type this, but consistent with the sport of triathlon, the waiver states that if the race is cancelled due to really, really bad weather, there are no refunds. This is due to everything being paid for prior to race day. We all have to share in the risk of dangerous weather. It would have to be DANGEROUS to run the race for us to cancel.

Tired of Fighting for Space in Transition? We’ve got plenty of room! Here are the facts you need to know about our bike racks:

• Athletes will find their designated bike rack by race number • You are not assigned a specific slot, so take any slot in your row. • Only rack your back tire to conform to the design. • You must alternate the direction of bikes (See helpful pictures). • In order to safely rack your bike, you must be in the small chain ring. • If you have a mountain bike, we have adapters to make it work, just ask! • Our staff will be available in Transition to answer any questions that you have. • Check out our YouTube Video of Bike Rack at www.youtube.com/user/maxperformancetri

16

Buzzards Bay Tri – Athlete Packet USAT Rules

Rules & Regulations– Cliff Notes Version The following rules represent the more salient USAT rules; those closely monitored at most races. The penalties for violation are either time penalties or disqualification. The list below does not represent a comprehensive list, you’re on your own for that - see USAT website. Helmet - no modifications may be made. Helmets must be worn as they were purchased. Helmet Chin Straps - must be buckled at all times when on the bicycle. Do not unbuckle your chin straps unless you have gotten off your bike. Outside Assistance – simply not allowed other than that offered by race and medical officials. Bike - handle bar "plugs" on bikes used for participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. During bike inspections, prior to the racking of your bike, officials will inspect your bike to see if your handle bar ends are plugged. Try to avoid last minute fixes to this at the race since you’ll have enough nervousness as it is. Transition Area - all equipment must be placed in the properly designated and individually assigned bike corrals. Max races assign bikes to bike racks based on your bib-race number. All participants must return their bicycles to an upright position in their designated bicycle corral. No person shall interfere with another participant's equipment or impede the progress of another participant. And no glass containers are allowed in the Transition Area. Drafting – each bike has an “imaginary box.” Put another way, there is a drafting zone two meters wide and seven meters long, beginning at your front wheel. You have 15-seconds to travel by another cyclist’s box and when passing, always pass on the left. Translation – stay three bike lengths behind and pass quickly on the left! Headphones – it’s a good thing we have great music at the Transition Area, since you’re not allowed any type of headset, headphone, etc. any time during the race. Race Numbers – should be visible at all times on bike and run, even though chip timing is used. Course Boundaries – follow the prescribed course and stay within all coned lanes. Do not cross a solid center road line to pass other cyclists. Please obey all traffic laws. Unsportsmanlike Conduct – refrain from foul, harsh, argumentative, abusive language and other conduct towards volunteers, spectators, fellow athletes, Officials, our dog, etc. Variable Time Penalties – guess what, they vary. There are different categories and different penalties based on the offense and event race distance. Max RDs and USAT Officials know their stuff, so you can talk to them if you fit in this category at race finish. Protests – you are allowed to protest to the Head Max RD at the sanctioned event. Everyone makes mistakes, so you never know. Details on the process are in the USAT Handbook.
