ADVENT

First Sunday of Advent | 5

Prayer over the OfferingsToday’s prayer first appeared in the Verona

Sacramentary as an option for use during the month of July. The words have remained un-changed since the sixth century.Preface

The first preface of Advent was newly composed for the 1970 missal. Previous Roman

Missals had no special preface for Advent. Both

Advent prefaces in today’s missal are new, and

you use the first today because it sets the tone for the season by mentioning the two comings

of Christ. The preface uses a vocabulary in-spired by many passages in the New Testament.

The majesty of Christ is noted in Matthew 19:28, 24:30 and 25:31, as well as in Luke 9:26

and 21:27. The second coming is also presaged

in Luke 12:35–36, Acts 1:10–11, and Revelation

1:5–7. The watchfulness of the Church appears

in Romans 8:19–21 and 2 Peter 3:13. God’s manifest work appears in Colossians 1:26–27.Communion AntiphonThis antiphon has been in use on this Sun-

day since at least the eighth century. There is a parallelism in Latin that is difficult to render

exactly in English. The verbs in the two clauses

are identical. It says something like this: “The Lord will give kindness and the earth will give

its fruit.”

Postcommunion PrayerThis is a new composition for the 1970 missal, but it conflates two prayers that ap-peared in the Verona Sacramentary, one for the

Ascension and another on the anniversary of a

bishop’s consecration. Somehow they work for

the themes of this day.BlessingYou may use the solemn blessing for Ad-

vent. See p. 000 above.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFULYear AWe have come rejoicing to the house of the

Lord. With thankful hearts we present our needs.

— Intercessions —O God, who judge works of darkness and offer the armor of light, come to the rescue of your people.

Through Christ our Lord.

Year BLet us turn to the face of the Lord, and we shall be saved.

— Intercessions —O God, whose time of coming we do not know, make us watchful and grant our prayers. Through Christ our Lord.

Year CWe lift up our souls to the Lord, who is good and upright.

— Intercessions —Make us vigilant, O God; hear our prayers and give us strength to stand before the Son of Man. Who lives with you for ever and ever.

Leading Through ChangeYour Parish and the Revised Roman MissalKathleen Felong

Change can be challenging—especially when in relation to something as sacred as the words we say at Mass. How well will your parish accept and adapt to the new English translation? Will there be excite-ment? Will there be questions or confusion? What can you do now, before the implementation, to help your parish pray and sing the new translation of the Mass? All these questions and more are addressed clearly and pastorally in Kathleen Felong’s new resource on managing this change in your

parish. Felong’s experience as an employee of a Fortune 500 company and as a music director for a small parish combine expertly to offer examples of successful, “real-world” methods of preparation for, education about, and implementation of the new English translation of The Roman Missal. A must read for all parish committees and leaders.

Something old(er), something new(er): Fr. Lucien Deiss’ Grant to Us, O Lord (octavo 002556, $1.00) is a familiar, classic Lenten song for many, deserving to be sung again or for the first time this Lent! Using Jeremiah’s beautiful, comforting imagery of returning to our covenant with God, it perfectly captures the renewing spirit of Lent.

Fr. Jim Marchionda’s Jesus (octavo 008869, $1.40) is a meditation on the Holy Name of Jesus, and incorporates Paul’s Philippians hymn from Palm Sunday. As we join those in the RCIA in being converted to or coming back to Christ, this serenely beautiful song will help us on the journey. Sing it all through Lent, at Mass, and at reconciliation services. Your parish will love both these songs and—more importantly—grow in faith through them.

Habits of a Priestly Heart Fr. Eugene Hemrick

A must read for all parish leaders, this book is designed to help today’s priests better understand, accept, and live with the new and sometimes overwhelming challenges of the third millennium. Insights are given through Hemrick’s experiences with priests he has encountered throughout his own spiritual journey and covers topics ranging from becoming “defined” as a priest to maintaining one’s physical health. Hemrick’s practical wisdom will enrich the lives of all priests by renewing and affirming their ministry and will help others to better understand this truly remarkable vocation. 001760 Hardcover ................$24.95

Transition Time

For the times you are looking for the right piece that can be expanded or contracted as needed, Taste and See (octavo 008224, $1.25) is a winner that showcases the collaborative skills of Joanne Boyce, Mike Stanley, and Aidan Pepper. Our London-based composers present a versatile setting that

may be performed many different ways. Four separate refrains can be sung individually or together in any combination. Some performance suggestions are in the octavo, as are parts for two C instruments, clarinet, and saxophone. The text suggests themes of comfort and Eucharist, and would work well for Communion, healing, or penitential services.

Michael Perza’s You Are the Light i Seek, (octavo 008771, $1.25) captured my heart the very first time I heard and sang it. Scored for SAB choir, descant, and C instrument, this is a perfect piece for any Sunday when the image of light in the darkness is portrayed. In a particular way, this piece is appropriate for the Fourth Sunday of Lent when the Second Scrutiny is celebrated. The elect (those to be baptized at Easter) are on perhaps the most challenging portion of their conversion journey. Perza’s text is comforting and at the same time expresses the longing each of us has to dwell in the temple of the Lord forever. Your choir will love this piece. Because the parts are easily learned, a choir director can spend more time shaping the choral sound. This is a most satisfying piece of choral music!

We Shall Walk through the Valley in Peace, adapted by William Appling (octavo SATB 008729, $1.25; TTBB 002328, $1.15), is a simple, soulful spiritual that makes a good meditation to use on the Fifth Sunday of Lent (the raising of Lazarus) or Good Friday, or any time you want a song of comfort and peace. Even though it is scored for unaccompanied singing, the rich harmonies practically “sing themselves,” and a choir of any size can perform this piece with ease. Available in both SATB and TTBB versions, you will want to keep it in your choir’s “ready repertoire” throughout the year.

Return to God (OCTAVO 008340, $1.30) from John Angotti’s CD Joy Beyond Our dreams (Cd 008276, $17.00) is a versatile and imaginative gathering song for Lent, and a worthy addition to your parish’s seasonal repertoire. John’s fresh take on this theme cleverly incorporates in its verses Alan Hommerding’s masterful text “From Ashes to the Living Font” (found in most WLP worship resources set to the tune ST. FLAVIAN), coupled with an engaging refrain. The minor key introduction nicely contrasts the parallel major of the refrain and verses, but also serves to set up the optional bridge, which is really a Kyrie in disguise! This Kyrie could be used simply to end the piece, or—for more progressive parishes—it could become the penitential rite. In the case of the latter, the music of the interlude may be used as underpinning during the spoken greeting of the liturgy, then flow seamlessly into the sung invocations of Form C, unifying the entire entrance rite. “Return to God” exemplifies John Angotti’s commitment to serving the Church: as an enthralling performer, he could write exclusively for his own talents, but instead, he continues to give us accessible songs any parish can embrace on its own.

If you haven’t already discovered this song on your own, I’d like to introduce you to Be Still for the Presence of the Lord by David Evans (found in Voices as One, Volume 1—song #9, 006593). The melody soars, the chords are easy, and the lyrics–they

could apply to almost any occasion. No matter where we are or what we do, the presence, power, and glory of the Lord are with us. This fast became a favorite of both the assembly and the musicians in my parish. It can be played and sung as a straightforward hymn, or filled out with a contemporary band. This song works well . . . period. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Also available, C and B-flat instrument parts (WLP 006704, 006705).

Ed Bolduc’s lyrics in The face of God (OCTAVO 007356, $1.15) will move you and your parish, inspiring everyone to see God’s face in “the land of the living.” The refrain of this piece is very easy for the entire parish to pick up. Quite possibly the most

powerful part of this song occurs when the cantor singing the verses is joined on the refrain by assembly and SAB choir. Whichever arrangement you choose, the melody and lyrics are awe-inspiring! This song is also found in Voices as One, Volume 1—song #88.

A Pastor’s Perspectives on ParticipationRev. Darren Henson

Through his many pastoral experiences all over the United States, it was while serving as the pastor of Sacred Heart parish in Emporia, Kansas that Rev. Darren Henson wrote these insightful essays. Within these pages, he reflects on several facets of musical participation at the Mass, focusing on the roles that everyone—pastor, music ministers, assembly—has in singing their praise to God. This resource also includes quotations from “Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship” that support Rev. Henson’s insights.001702 ....................................... $5.00

(Salmo 95:8)

Envía una

tarjeta o una notita a

alguien que vive en soledad o

que está enfermo.

Simple Gifts; American folk Hymns for Violin and Piano (SOnGBOOK 002540, $16.00), arranged by James Clemens, is a collection of outstanding arrangements of favorite hymn tunes. Jim’s arrangements are both colorful and idiomatic for the violin. His piano writing is creative and supportive. “Morning Song” is delicate and plaintive; “Holy Manna” has a Copland hoedown feel; both nettleton and resignation are reminiscent of old-time waltzes with modal touches; and “Simple Gifts” has two settings, both as theme and variations. Violin parts are included with the songbook. These settings will work throughout the year and will challenge and delight your parish violinist!
