St. Vincent’s Westchester Update www.stvincentswestchester.org

Regardless of whether the problem is abuse or dependence, however, the process of overcoming addiction is long and difficult. “Treating addiction is not a ‘one size fits all’ process,” says Richard Donn, M.D., clinical chief of St. Vincent’s Outpatient Addiction Recovery Service.

“A person’s support system, family history of addiction, and overall mental health are all factors in designing treatment,” Dr. Donn said. “You weigh these factors, start with the least intensive approach you can and work your way up, depending on the person’s response to treatment.”A comprehensive evaluation is an important first step in addiction treatment so that these factors, as well as the need for medically-supervised detoxification, can be assessed before a personalized treatment plan is developed.

Because heroin addiction is a chronic disease like diabetes or asthma, people cannot simply stop using the drug for a few days or weeks and be cured. People can relapse and return to drug abuse, sometimes several times. Those who have relapsed can be at high risk of overdose because their bodies cannot tolerate the same level of drug as before.

Research shows that the most effective treatment for addiction often combines individual and group counseling with medications such as methadone and suboxone, which can reduce craving and withdrawal symptoms.

The road can be long with many detours, but with personalized treatment and support, people can and do recover from addiction.

St. Vincent’s Westchester offers inpatient rehabilitation and extensive outpatient addiction treatment services at its Harrison campus and at The Maxwell Institute in Tuckahoe and the Port Chester Recovery Center. Call (914) 925-5320 for more information.

Dear Friends,Dear Friends,

Your generous donations over the past year have enabled St. Vincent’s to keep growing and improving to meet the needs of the thousands of individuals throughout Westchester and beyond who come to us to recover from mental illness and addiction.

As you see in this issue of Update, we have expanded our programs into Port Chester and are launching a new primary care clinic at our Harrison campus to better meet the medical needs of clients, staff and the surrounding community. Your participation in events such as last month’s Spring Sprint also plays a critical role in our ability to keep pace with the rapid changes in today’s health care technology.

We thank you for your steadfast support of our mission, which is more important than ever.
