OBJECTIVES

FormatBased on action learning principles, ourSymposium will provide a challengingday of opportunity for you to:

• hear from expert practitioners;

• debate with fellow attendees and our facultyon the practical implications of the tools at yourdisposal and how they might be used withinyour own organisation;

• recalibrate your own understanding of the role ofHR leaders in the complex organisations of todayand the specific skills - tools - which organisationswill be looking to its HR leaders to provide;

• consider your development going forward andthe gaps to be filled in your understanding ofHR leadership issues.

This year, our Symposium will focus on anumber of topics all of which potentialHR leaders need to understand in termsof their applications and limitations,and the context in which they mightbest be used, to provide attendeeswith a ‘toolkit’ for decision making,management and leadership.

Clearly you will not become ‘expert’ in the useof these tools in the time we have availablebut the Symposium will look to raise yourawareness of what is available and provideyou with sufficient understanding to be ableto follow up on those topics which you findof most value. Leadership is not being thesubject expert but more about understandingthe tools available, being able to recognisethe value they might bring to particularcircumstances and being able to use theoutputs generated. Your toolkit will never becomplete but you will come to recognise thatyou possess the tools for many situations youface throughout your career whilst continuallyinvesting in new ones as the needs arise.

Providing leadershipand guidance to

effective organisation

Your HR Leaders toolkit will have a numberof compartments or drawers where youwill keep the tools required for similar jobs,or the contact details of experts who canprovide a service which may be beyond youfor a number of reasons - time, competence,or cost for instance. Examples of thecompartments might be:

THE TOOLKIT

6

You are unlikely to be expert in all of these areas butthat does not mean that you cannot build a successfulcareer in HR leadership. What you do require howeveris an understanding of the availability of tools whichcan help you do the job, what they will deliver andwhere you might find them. Like DIY at home, it’susually better to consult an expert rather than believethat you can manage on your own (or with in-houseresources). You cannot be an expert in everything butyou must be an expert in procurement.

A major element of your procurement expertise mustbe selection and discernment in your choice of newtools. Evaluating new skills and techniques is extremelyimportant in fully recognising the benefits they canoffer to you personally or your organisation. We canall think of costly mistakes when for example theclaims made for training, services or systems don’tdeliver in practice.

• commercial acumen andunderstanding the business;

• developing strategy;

• recruitment and selection;

• performance measurement;

• OD and change management;

• training, learning and development;

• HR systems and technology;

• negotiating skills and employee relations.

The Symposium will endeavournot to become immersed in thedetails of tools and techniquesbut rather to describe what isavailable in a number of HRdisciplines and activity areasand share experiences as to whatworks and what doesn’t. Similarly,in terms of your personal skillset it is vital that you are ableto recognise what you don’tknow as well as what you do.

Our case study - The Emerging Organisation - is designed todraw out a number of learning points which you will be able tolink not only with your personal development but also with issuesyour organisations are wrestling with at the moment. We wantto make practical connections which will enable you to take awaycontributions, or even solutions, to problems you and yourcolleagues are currently dealing with.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Our keynote speaker, Amy Edmondson, willintroduce attendees to the notion of teaming -a verb as contrasted with team - a noun.

8

Amy will draw on examples of teaming from heracademic and consultancy work and will develop theconcept as an integral element of the HR Leader’stoolkit as organisations become much more fluid andproject oriented with teams forming and reformingon an almost continuous basis. Leadership in thisenvironment is not the same as managing a seriesof repetitive, discrete activities in a steady stateunchanging world.

As your leadership journey progresses, teamingbecomes evermore crucial to successful outcomes asfresh challenges arise and unintended consequenceshave to be managed on the fly. Understanding andbeing able to lead in the ambiguous and complexcircumstances of fast-moving organisations will bea vital tool for successful HR leaders.

Amy C. EdmondsonAmy Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Managementat Harvard Business School. The Novartis Chair was established to enable thestudy of human interactions that led to the creation of successful businessenterprises for the betterment of society. Professor Edmondson teachesMBA and Executive Education courses in leadership, team effectiveness, andorganisational learning, and a doctoral course in field research methods.
