#R700 – 1-1/4" Glaze Wash Brush (Glaze Wash, size 1" #20103)#4170 – 8 Majestic Filbert (Filbert, size 8 #20119)#2211 – 5/16" Funky Pouncer

Preparation:1. Apply Multi-Purpose Sealer to the frame and two inserts; using the glaze wash brush. Lightly sand, wipe off with a lint-free cloth.

Round Top Frame2. Apply the Brocade Motif Stencil or stencil of choice at the top surface area of the frame with Texture Crackle; using the Relief Stenciling tech-nique. Position stencil on surface, secure with Frog Tape. Place a dab of Texture Crackle on your palette, it is a bit stiff, but when you work it with the palette knife it becomes creamy and easy to work with. Be sure to close the jar until you need more and keep the edges of the jar clean to ensure that the jar will reseal properly.

With light pressure, apply a thin layer of Texture Crackle over the stencil; using the palette knife. To remove stencil, hold down one end with fi n-gers, while gently and slowly lifting the opposite end. Immediately clean palette knife and stencil with Deco Magic Brush Cleaner.

After Texture Crackle has dried, basecoat the entire frame with two coats of Raw Umber; using the 1-1/4” glaze wash brush. When dry, basecoat over the Raw Umber with Everlasting Chalky Finish Paint; using the 1-1/4” glaze wash brush. When this coat is thoroughly dry, sand over the entire frame; to achieve a worn look. Wipe off with a lint-free cloth; refer to photo.

Tissue Paper Background3. To apply texture to the background of the insert, adhere tissue paper to the surfaces. Cut a piece of white tissue paper a couple of inches larger than the surface. Crumble the tissue, then gently unfold. Give the surface of the insert, where the tissue will be applied, a good coat of Multi-Purpose Sealer, being sure not to skip any areas. Lay the tissue paper over the area, press gently down

with your fi ngers. Roll over the surface using the sealer bottle to press out any air bubbles. Give the top of the tissue surface another coat of sealer. If a piece should tear, simply patch with another small piece of tissue gluing in place with the sealer.

Allow to dry before trimming the edges. To trim the tissue edges even with the surface, use the emery board to sand along the edges.

Basecoat over the tissue surface of the inserts with Bleached Sand; using the ¾ glaze wash brush; achieve an opaque coverage.

Painting Instructions:Transferring Design4. With a traced pattern, gray graphite and a stylus, transfer the horizon lines and crop fi elds to the surfaces. Use the graph ruler to aid in the transfer of any straight lines, by dragging the stylus along the ruler’s edge.

Spring Insert Background5. Corner load the angle with Terra Coral, fl oat a wide tint along the horizon, fl oating into the sky area; refer to photo for placement. Then double load the angle with Baby Blue, fl oat a wide shade across the top of the sky area.

Basecoat the crop area with Camel. Corner load the angle with Raw Sienna, randomly chisel fl oat* over the area.

*chisel fl oat by cor-ner loading the angle, blend off on your pal-ette, lay the bristles of the brush fl at on the surface, chisel edge up. Push the paint on the bristles front left to right in a scratch-ing motion, allowing the bristles to pull a broken line that is slightly fl oated.

Corner load the angle with Evergreen, ran-domly chisel fl oat* over the land area. When dry, pre-damp-en the land area with water, randomly dab Marigold over the land area; using the Funky Pouncer.3

Transfer the remaining design to the surface (except the foreground tulips); using the stylus and graph ruler.

Summer Insert Background6. Corner load the angle with Marigold, fl oat a wide tint along the horizon, fl oating into the sky area; refer to photo for placement. Corner load the angle with thinned Uniform Blue, fl oat a wide shade across the top of the sky area. Then corner load the angle with Uniform Blue, re-fl oat across the top of the sky area; to deepen.

Corner load the angle with Snow White, random-ly chisel fl oat* clouds in the sky area. Basecoat the crop area with Camel. Corner load the angle with Raw Sienna, randomly chisel fl oat* over the area.

Corner load the angle with Celery Green, ran-domly chisel fl oat* over the land area. Repeat steps with Sable Brown.

Transfer the remaining design to the surface (ex-cept for the foreground watermelon slice); using the stylus and graph ruler.

Background Pines7. Follow these steps for the pines along the horizon and to the left of the lighthouses. With a pencil and the graph ruler, lightly transfer the center line for each pine. Now slightly dampen the surface with clean water where the pine will be pulled. The dampened surface will allow the pines to softly bleed; giving the illusion of the pines in the distance. Load the 8 Filbert with the appropriate color across the chisel edge. Up on the chisel edge, vertically pull the very top of the pine. Horizon-tally tap from left to right for the boughs, slowly and slightly widening as you work towards the base of the pine.Allow a bit of the background to show through; so the pine doesn’t look like a triangle.

Repeat step randomly tapping on the boughs; to deepen certain areas.

Spring Pines – Plantation Pine; repeat randomly on boughs with Plantation Pine, to deepen; for highlight randomly tap Wasabi Green.Summer Pines – Hauser Dark Green; repeat ran-domly on boughs with Black Green, to deepen; for highlight randomly tap Silver Sage Green. Horizon Shrubs8. With the appropriate size Texture brush and colors, dance in the horizon shrubs.

For proper use of the Texture brush, use the fol-lowing method. Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpen-dicular to your palette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off – keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note – this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in different direc-tions in between your fi ngers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Al-low some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don’t end up with a globby or muddy look.

Spring Shrubs – dance in the shrubs with Ev-ergreen. Then randomly dance across the tops with Wasabi Green; for highlight and separation.Summer Shrubs – dance shrubs in with Arbor Green. Then randomly dance across the tops with Silver Sage Green; for highlight and separa-tion.

Crops9. Slightly pre-dampen the area with clean wa-ter, then dance the crop rows in with the appro-priate color; using the sm Texture brush; refer to photo for placement.Spring – randomly changing colors with Ever-green, Peony Pink and Baby PinkSummer – randomly changing colors with Sap-phire, Snow White and Country Red

Basecoating Structures10. Use the appropriate size shaders to basecoat the structures –

Pre-dampen the pink area with water, then with the sm Texture brush and Peony Pink, lightly and randomly dance over the top two-thirds of the pink area, this time leaving a pink strip next to the white strip.

Base the seeds with Graphite; using the 5/0 liner. Corner load the angle with Peony Pink, fl oat a shade along the right outside of each seed; setting it into the watermelon fl esh. Finishing Touches:Finishing 20. Basecoat the edges and back sides of the inserts with the appropriate size brushes –Spring – Wasabi GreenSummer – Arbor Green

21. To protect fi nished painted pieces, varnish the entire inserts with the DuraClear matte varnish; us-ing the Oval Wash Combo brush. This brush doesn’t leave any visible brushstroke marks after the var-nish has dried. I did not varnish over the chalky fi nish of the frame.
