Benefits of Personal TrainingSerious athletes have long used personal trainers to enhance their performance in competition. Movie stars are known to hire personal trainers to keep them fitting into their Oscar gowns. But the people who benefit most from personal training are ordinary men and women seeking to be stronger and function more effectively in their everyday lives.

Working with a trainer, anyone can achieve their fitness goals—goals as modest as touching your toes again or as ambitious as preparing to run a marathon. Whether you want to lose weight, regain flexibility, develop speed or simply feel good again, personal training is an activity from which you will continue to reap benefits in years to come.

Our personal trainers’ main objectives are to assist, guide, and educate those who wish to experience a greater ease and physical ability in their lives.

Kids Science LabsJoin the hottest critical thinking and prob-lem-solving program in Chicago for an edu-cational adventure. Kids Science Labs has developed innovative hands-on classes for children age two through twelve using our unique inquiry-based LIFES Curriculum (“Learning Innovation, Fun Engineering, and Science”). By engaging children with the hands-on science they love early and with regular frequency year round we help enable a generation of amazing critical thinkers regardless of their future careers. These activity-based classes teach core sci-ence principles based on a question that children ask and then use science activities with the guidance of outstanding teachers to explore answers. Our instructors are certified teachers and scientists.

Examples of our science fundamentals se-ries include: how Spider-Man walks on walls (pressure and suction), how tape works (adhesives), why bowling pins fall down (momentum) and even projectile mo-tion in a class called Flying Chickens. Each week we address a new question and ex-plore how things work.

Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of weaponless self-defense. Our Karate program follows a systemized belt ranking for all participants. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). One must fulfill certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test environment to secure progressive promotions up to and including the black belt (dan) levels. When one has acquired a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Karate, he or she can be promoted to the rank of first degree black belt. Uniforms, belt tests and tournaments are optional and will incur additional costs.

Creative Paws Creative Paws uses positive reinforcement training methods to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing an effective means of communication and understanding as the

foundation for learning. We believe that training your dog should be enjoyable for both you and your dog!

Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. She has been recognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen evaluator by the American Kennel Club, as well as a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers, an affiliate organization of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the first organization to offer a national standard for trainer certification.

Ashlee’s competition dog Spirit is the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) number one ranked German Wirehaired Pointer in agility for 2008–2012. He is the second of his breed to earn an AKC Master Agility Championship title, as well as the only German Wirehaired Pointer to reach the finals of an AKC National Agility event, a feat Ashlee has handled him to accomplish twice. Aside from agility he is titled in traditional obedience, rally obedience, tracking, hunting and dock diving for a combined total of 26 titles and counting.

Creek is Ashlee’s future competition dog. He is also a German Wirehaired Pointer and is currently training for agility, traditional obedience and rally obedience. He has lofty goals to live up to the achievements of his predecessor, Spirit.

Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a wide variety of people as well as to each other. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Additional topics will be discussed such as addressing the common puppy issues of house training, mouthing, leadership and preventing behavior problems. Puppies will also learn to sit and begin recall training (coming when called). This class is appropriate for puppies ages two–four months old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations prior to attending. If your dog has not yet received the second round, please plan to attend class without your puppy until the second round of vaccination has been administered.

Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedience including sit, down, stand, recall (coming when called), stay and heel–everything your companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positive reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards or a small toy with you to class.

Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101. Additional levels of difficulty and distractions will be added. Dogs of any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basic obedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called), stay and heel.

Everyone called her Grandma Ruth. And even though she spent seventeen years de-signing costumes for the Children’s The-atre of Winnetka (CTW), she wasn’t con-cerned only with what the children wore. For all of those years, and over the course of 33 shows, Ruth lent her vision, talent, boundless energy, infinite care and love to CTW, first stepping in when her daughter, Cathy Hirschmann, produced and choreo-graphed Anything Goes in 1997.

Cathy recalls feeling over her head. As usual, she called her mother, who also hap-pened to be her best friend and trusted ad-visor, for help. Cathy knew that her mom, an artist by training and avid and gener-ous volunteer by nature, wouldn’t let her down. “I need a two-story ship,” she told her mom. “Do you think you can design it?” Like the show’s title, Ruth’s attitude was anything goes and, without hesitation, she designed that ship. Cathy joked that it was so extraordinary, so monumental, that they could have staged Titanic on it.

Ruth’s work didn’t stop there. She paint-ed sets, too, even going so far as creating “crowds” by populating the backdrops with each cast member’s face and then, when the show ended, gifting each child with his or her portrait.

Ruth’s true talents were revealed in the costumes she designed and sewed over the years. From lions to sea creatures, beau-ties to beasts, Ruth envisioned original creations, employing innovative materials like hula hoops or metal loops to make the costumes both functional and comfortable. What mattered most to Ruth was how a child felt, driving her to create costumes that delighted their wearers. She was con-cerned that a child felt like the ultimate Triton, Belle or Peter Pan, but, more than that, she wanted the kids to feel like their absolute best selves. It wasn’t enough that each button, seam, spangle, sequin or hem was in place (although this was indeed im-portant to Ruth). What really mattered was that each cast member felt as extraordinary as the clothes they wore. At this, Ruth ex-celled, fitting after fitting, show after show, and child after child.

Ruth managed to transform the ordinary into the magical. From garments she un-covered at second hand stores to bolts of fabrics and buckets of buttons, and with-out use of a pattern or template save her rich imagination, she created hundreds of memorable costumes. There were princes and princesses and kings and queens. There were cowgirls and cowboys, gangsters and showgirls. There was even dancing cutlery, tumbling starfish, and skittering crabs.

All the while, Ruth forged deep and mean-ingful relationships with the hundreds of children who wore her costumes. They inevitably came to see their fittings with Ruth, and the care she extended on their behalf, no matter how large or small their role, as a highlight of CTW cast member-ship.

As Aimee LeFevre, a former cast mem-ber of multiple shows, put it, “Ruth made each and every person involved with chil-dren’s theatre, whether stage crew, the star, or a rock in the background, feel so special. She treated you equally and made sure your costumes fit perfectly. She was happy to switch things to make you look and feel beautiful and special. I’ve been in many productions of Beauty and the Beast and CTW is the only one that handmade the costumes. You felt special because they were truly handcrafted and you just knew that Grandma Ruth made it just for you.

And she never forgot a face, either. She re-membered all the kids like they were her own.”

Charlie Oh, another CTW alum, adds, “Ruth Abelson brought an incredible love of theatre and community to the Children’s Theatre of Winnetka. Every tiny gangster or underwater crustacean would feel they had meaning on stage because Ruth treated every moment on stage as what it is-- a gift. Her generosity of spirit will be missed.”

“As talented as she was,” recalls Emily McLane, referring to a beautiful gold dress Grandma Ruth fashioned for her role in Beauty and the Beast, “what sticks with me more was the way she made me feel…The early teenage years are awkward for practically everybody, but she never failed to make me feel appreciated, talented, cared for, and, even as an angsty 13-year-old, pretty. (H)er constant support helped me develop into the young woman I am.”

Ruth was unselfish and fearless, supportive and joyful. She was respected, admired, and loved. Her ability to reunite missing costume parts with their rightful wearers and willingness to go the extra mile, gather-ing up socks from the dressing room floor to wash before returning them to their own-ers, is a testament to her generosity of spir-it and unflinching calm. Whether repairing a popped button or ripped seam between acts, or providing a human shield so that a young actor could change a costume in a crowded dressing room, her presence reas-sured the kids that they were being looked after and that they were loved.

The CTW community will miss Grandma Ruth deeply, even as new generations of children continue to give life to the cos-tumes she created.

Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. Winnetka Community House continually strives to reduce such risks, and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participants’ safety. Please recognize that Winnetka Community House does not carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. The cost of such would make program fees prohibitive. Therefore, each person registering himself\herself or a family member for a recreation program/activity should review his/her own health insurance policy for coverage. It must be noted that the absence of health insurance coverage does not make Winnetka Community House automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses.
