While not as experienced as in years past, the goal for Iola High’s Mustangs re-mains as lofty as ever.

The Mustangs bid adieu to one of the most decorated senior classes in the baseball program’s eight-year history in 2012, a year in which Iola (17-6) made it to the Class 4A regional finals.

Despite the departure of the seniors, plenty of talent exists, head coach Mark Per-cy said.

“I think that’s what has us so excited,” Percy said. “The last couple of years, we pretty much knew where everybody was going to play. We have some pretty good players remaining who just haven’t had a lot of chances. We won’t be as deep, talent-wise, but we’re expecting good things.”

The key, Percy said, “is fig-uring out which nine guys are going to play and where. Once we get that sorted out, we’re going to be pretty good.”

The four most experienced players all will see time on the mound. They also have thrived elsewhere on the field.

Seniors Aaron Barclay, Levi Ashmore and Mason Coons and junior Trent Lat-ta offer a vast repertoire of pitches.

All are consistent in one area, Percy noted: “They all throw strikes, which is what we stress.”

Ashmore will handle shortstop duties when he’s not pitching, Percy said. As a junior, Ashmore batted a robust .529, leading the team, with a .641 on-base percent-age. He also was a perfect 22-of-22 in stolen bases and led the Mustangs with 36 runs scored.

On the mound, Ashmore pitched sparingly, giving up seven runs in 5 2/3 innings.

“Levi can really move the ball around, and his off-speed pitch is improving,” Percy said.

Coons is expected to see time at third base, first base and on the mound. Last year, Coons hit .452 with 24 RBIs, ranking third on the team in both categories.

He also pitched in eight games — two starts — while going 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA in

18 1/3 innings.“Mason does a good job of

spotting his pitches where he wants them to go.”

Barclay saw most of his action in relief last year, compiling a 0.94 ERA in 11 appearances over 22 1/3 in-nings. Barclay limited oppos-ing batters to a .173 average. He also allowed only a single extra base hit.

“The thing that’s so im-

pressive about Aaron is that he pitches to contact, but so few batters are able to square up the ball when they hit it,” Percy said. “We’re looking for him to step up as a starter this year.’

Latta also sparkled in spot duty for the Mustangs, win-ning both of his starts with a 1.11 ERA, covering 12 2/3 innings. He also pitched four shutout innings in Iola’s sea-

son-opening doubleheader against Chanute March 14.

“Trent is deceiving for the hitters,” Percy said. “He’s

Versatility is the name of the game for Iola High’s soft-ball team.

With just three returning starters from last year, the 2013 Fillies squad will rely upon a core of versatile ath-letes able to play multiple po-sitions.

Leading the way are four seniors and three juniors, each of whom brings a var-ied skill set to the team, ninth-year head coach Vince Coons said.

The seniors will be relied upon to provide leadership, Coons said.

Katie Thompson will man first base, where her defense is an asset. She struggled at the plate, connecting on 2 of 35 at bats with a double.

“We’re depending on her to come through for us on of-fense,” Coons said.

Caitlyn Callaway batted .267 for Iola as a junior with four doubles. She was second on the team with 14 RBIs.

“She can play just about anywhere we want her to,” Coon said. “She’ll see time at third base or at second if that spots open. Caitlyn also can play the outfield.”

Holly Schomaker will see time at catcher, third, sec-ond and in the outfield. She batted .290 for the Fillies as a junior. She ranked second on the team with five doubles among her 18 hits.

Senior Tessa Rowe also gained valuable experience last year at the junior var-sity level and is expected to contribute her senior year.

THE BULK OF the Fillies’ starting experience comes in its junior class.

Mackenzie Weseloh saw plenty of time in the pitch-er’s circle. She appeared in 10 games — four starts — and compiled a 5.83 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 24 innings.

She also batted .241 with four doubles while playing elsewhere in the field. She’s already split time with Han-nah Endicott at shortstop.

Endicott also will pitch for the Fillies. She pitched spar-ingly last year as a sopho-more, tossing 5 2/3 innings in relief work, a threshold she surpassed already in

Nobody said staying at the top of the mountain was easy.

Take Iola High junior Mi-chael Wilson, the reigning Southeast Kansas League pole vault champion. Wilson cleared 12 feet in the SEK meet in 2012. Teammate Jus-tin Baker took the bronze, “and the second-place fin-isher last year was a senior,” IHS track and field coach Marv Smith noted.

So hopes are high for an-other league championship, right?

It’s possible, Smith said, but the road got much tough-er.

In moving to the Pioneer League in 2013 in track — as well as all other sports — Iola enters perhaps the best collection of pole vaulters in the state.

Five returning Pioneer League athletes cleared 13’6” last year, Smith noted.

“It’s just unusual to have that many strong vaulters,” Smith said. “It’s going to be tough.”

The Mustangs have reason to hope for strong perfor-mances throughout the sea-son.

“We’ll have the capability to score in every event on the track,” Smith said.

Among the standouts, Smith forecasts strong seasons for juniors Adam Kauth, Tyler Powelson, Jer-emy Spears and Tyler McIn-tosh.

Kauth should excel at hur-dles, while Powelson would have been a strong favorite to win league in the 800-meter run had Iola stayed in SEK (he placed third at league in 2012), Smith said. Like Wilson, Powelson will see a strong contingent of return-ing Pioneer League athletes in the way.

Smith is considering hold-

ing Powelson — reigning Pioneer League cross coun-try champion — out of long-distance races in order to en-ter him in multiple events at shorter distances.

McIntosh and Spears both ran Iola’s 4x800-meter relay team last year. They’ll team with Powelson, “but we’re still looking for that fourth leg,” Smith said.

“Spears gives us a good, long-distance runner,” Smith said.

Jacob Harrison ran on the 4x800 last year, “but his strong suit is in the 400,” Smith said. “We’re looking to move him down in distance instead of keeping him in the 800.”

One intriguing newcomer to the track team is junior John Whitworth, Iola’s lead-ing rusher on the Mustang football team.

Smith anticipates Whit-worth will run the 100-meter dash and the long jump, as well as the 4x100-meter relay.

Sophomore Terrill Smith also has shown promise, both in the sprints and as a vaulter.

“We hope to keep Terrill in JV meets for the first half of the season for his vaulting, although it may not happen if he becomes a leg on our varsity relay teams.”

Jacob Cooper, Jason Tidd and Blaine Klubek all ran the 800 in JV meets last year. “We are looking at them, as well as Michael Wilson and Justin Baker for relay spots,” Smith said.

Jonathan Tidd will run shorter races — from the 400 on down. Two newcomers are Wyatt Jensen and Justice Boll, a transfer student from Minnesota.

NUMBERS are a bit more

New league offers challenges for Mustangs

Iola High senior Eli Grover will take his throwing talents to the Pioneer League in 2013, along with the rest of his Mustang track and field teammates. Iola left the Southeast Kansas League last year. For the Mustangs' roster and 2013 schedule, turn to page 8.

Numbers are down for the Iola High Fillies track team in 2013, but the proverbial cupboard is by no means bar-ren.

The Fillies sport a roster of only 15 — not enough to place multiple point scorers in each event — but Iola still has plenty of talent to lead the squad, head coach Marv Smith said.

Leading the way is senior Breanna Stout, Iola’s only senior and a state qualifier in the pole vault and as part of Iola’s 4x100-meter relay team. Stout is the defending Southeast Kansas League pole vault champion and bronze medalist in the high jump.

Sophomore Ashley Camp-bell also was a member of the 4x100 team last year as a freshman. She also fared well in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and was a member of Iola’s 4x400-meter relay team.

Two juniors, Darci Collins and Alexis Hobbs, scored points in the shot put and javelin, respectively.

Those four will welcome freshman Abigail Taylor — runner-up in the Pioneer League cross country meet in the fall — to the varsity squad. Taylor is expected to thrive in distance races for the Fillies.

“Alexis will score points for us in every meet,” Smith predicted.

A number of athletes ex-pected to return for this year’s team have declined to do so, for various reasons, Smith said.

Making up for those loss-es, in part, is a large class of incoming freshmen.

Three to follow as the sea-son progresses are Cassie Delich in the hurdles and long jump, Olivia Bannister in the pole vault and long

jump and Valerie Burtnett in the high jump and pole vault. They, along with ju-nior Shannon Vogel, will run relays as well.

“We expect big things from them,” Smith said.

Sophomore Brianne Jett and freshmen Jessica Oakley and Klair Vogel will focus on

throwing events. How the younger athletes

progress will determine how quickly Iola enters more re-lay events, Smith said.

Iola High's Justice Boll, left, and Ashley Campbell are integral members of their respec-tive track teams.

Led by a trio of talented freshmen, Iola High’s golf team qualified for the state tournament last year, the first such trip for IHS as a team in more than 30 years.

Now sophomores, Kaden Macha, Shane Walden and Drake Dieker highlight a team ready to challenge for a state championship.

In order to complete that quest, the trio will need to rely on a fourth golfer to step up, first-year coach Doug Kerr said.

“Our top three golfers match up well against any-body, but the most success-ful teams have consistent scores from one through four,” Kerr said.

Macha, Walden and Dieker each have the skills, and temperament, to avoid a sophomore slump, Kerr said.

“They all strike the ball well, and last year’s expe-rience was good for them, as well as our other young golfers,” Kerr said.

It should be noted Iola has no seniors on its ros-ter and only one junior in Weston Hines.

Also expected to see plenty of varsity action are sophomores Adam Peter-son and Matt Jacobs and freshman Gage Tomlinson.

The goal is to see steady improvement prior to the Class 4A regionals and state tournament in May.

The state tournament’s location bodes well for Io-la’s hopes.

Kerr noted the 2012 state golf tournament was at Dub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, Kan. This year’s will be at a public course in Cheney.

“The courses these kids normally play on are more

wide open than what they played on at state,” Kerr said. “That course wasn’t anything they were used to. Cheney’s course will be dif-ferent.”

The golfers are at Inde-pendence Country Club Wednesday.

“The neat thing about this team is we know they don’t have a one-year win-dow to be successful. With five sophomores and a junior, this team should be successful for quite a while.”

Conversely, Kerr under-stands the entire golf sea-son essentially boils down to regionals and state.

“You can be soaring along all season, have a bad round at regionals, and you’re done,” he said.

The key, Kerr said, is for the players to become men-tally tough so they can be physically successful on the course.

limited in throwing events.Senior Eli Grover finished

seventh in SEK in the discus, “although that mark was 10 feet short of his best mark of the season,” Smith said. “He should give us points in the discus and shot put all sea-son.”

Senior Stephen McDonald finished fourth in SEK in discus in 2012, although he is splitting time with the Mus-tang tennis team, which will limit the number of competi-tions he can enter.

Iola has no returning jav-elin throwers. Paul Specht and Jesse Zimmerman are both newcomers who will throw the javelin and dis-cus. “They are nice, strong-armed athletes, but it takes some time to master the me-chanics.”

Iola has only one under-classman, freshman Yohon Sinclair, throwing events.

“I’M NOT going to try to predict the outcome of our first Pioneer League meet,” Smith said. “Competing with six teams in a meet instead of the nine SEK teams places a priority on being able to score multiple places in sev-eral events, so depth will be critical.”

Iola also is down in num-bers. Four athletes switched to play tennis this season. Six who were on the track team in 2012 have given up spring sports altogether.

“The Pioneer League meet will be an exciting one for us because we do not compete against the schools through-out the season,” Smith said. “In past years, you almost knew who would get what place in the SEK events be-cause we saw them week after week. I am looking for-ward to May 9.”

Shane Walden hopes to return to the Class 4A State Golf Tournament with his Iola High teammates in 2013.

la’s season-opening double-header March 14 against Chanute.

At the plate, Endicott bat-ted .346 with 18 hits in 52 at bats.

Halie Cleaver will start at catcher for the Fillies. Cleav-er batted .244 as a sophomore last year.

“Halie is improving be-hind the plate,” Coons said. “She has a good arm and her instincts are getting better.”

Cleaver will be spelled by sophomore Katie Shields, who collected 3 hits in 14 at bats last year as a freshman.

“Katie started last year at catcher at the junior varsity level,” Coons noted, although she is expected to see time in the infield and outfield pre-dominantly.

Shelby Reno also saw plen-

ty of JV action and is expect-ed to step up at the varsity level this year.

“We like her in the out-field,” Coons said. “She’s a lefty, but she adapts well enough to whatever position we have her playing. She’s got a good arm on her.”

Baylea Thompson and Bayleigh Seeber also saw ac-tion last year at the JV level.

“Baylea Thompson has a good swing,” Coons said. “Bayleigh Seeber needs some experience. A lot will depend on how we can swing our JV season.”

With only 18 healthy play-ers — senior Libby Shay will miss the season because of a knee injury she suffered dur-ing basketball season — Iola must find a way to field JV squads simultaneously.

“The Pioneer League is

different in that the varsity and JV games are played at the same time, and we need 10 girls for our varsity team each game,” Coons said.

Sophomore Lauren Hunt has recently joined the team. She also runs track.

“We appreciate what she’s doing to help us out,” Coons said. “That’ll help us with our numbers.”

The Fillies resume regular season action today at An-derson County. The Fillies will host Burlington Friday in a junior varsity contest.

The Iola High boys tennis team offers a mix of youth and experience in 2013.

“We have some talent,” head coach Lyle Kern said. “I’m not sure if we’ll have state qualifiers this year, but with our younger players, we have a chance to be very suc-cessful.”

Leading the charge for the Mustangs will be freshman Tyler Heinrich, who mans the number one singles posi-tion.

He’ll vie for the top singles position throughout the year with senior Jordan Strickler.

The doubles teams feature

senior Stephen McDonald and freshman Mason Key and junior Bryan Mueller and freshman Colby Works.

Kern said he was counting on Strickler, McDonald and senior Drew Smith to pro-vide leadership for the un-derclassmen, “and the drive to do better.”

Meanwhile, the younger crop will help the Mustangs become “a well-rounded team,” Kern said.

The Mustangs already have competed at two events. They’ll return to the courts Thursday at Coffeyville and Saturday at Neodesha.

not that tall, but he pops it in there pretty well. He also throws strikes, which is huge at this level.”

All four must improve their stamina, particularly since Iola missed substantial prac-tice time early this month be-cause of bad weather.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the guys can locate their pitches,” Percy said.

SEVERAL OTHERS are expected to make significant contributions after seeing limited duty in years past.

Junior Derrick Weir bat-ted .392 in 51 at bats in 2012, with 16 RBIs and six extra base hits, including four doubles.

“Derrick has played some in left field,” Percy said. “He’s caught for us and he’s

been our designated hitter before that. In his limited experience he’s done a good job. He hits the ball hard.”

Tyler Clubine will see time at first base and in the outfield, depending on who is pitching, Percy said. Shae Beasley, senior, and Drew Faulhaber, sophomore, are vying for the second base-man’s job.

“Our third base job is up in the air,” Percy said. “Aaron may see time there, or (senior) Tyler Tomlinson or Mason. We might even put Trent or (junior) Jacob Rhoads in. It all depends on who’s getting the job done.”

Eric Heffern, senior, will start in center field, although he may shift to left field or elsewhere if the need arises, Percy said.

“That’s part of why this

season is so exciting,” Percy said. “The last two years, we pretty much just penciled in the lineups. And we may have a couple of guys from our sophomore and fresh-man classes step up. They’re just looking for an opportu-nity.”

PERCY ALSO is intrigued with what life in the Pioneer League will offer. This is

Iola’s first year after ending its affiliation with the South-east Kansas League.

“I imagine they’re in the same boat we are,” he said. “Not many teams have had a chance to get in a lot of practice time because of the weather. Off the top of my head, I’d say Osawatomie has a solid program with some decent kids coming back. Wellsville finished second

in state last year, but I’m not sure which kids are coming back. The coach from Cen-tral Heights has done a good job, and Prairie View is usu-ally competitive.

“Our number one goal ev-ery year is to win league,” Percy continued. “If you’re going to do anything at re-gionals or the state level, you usually have a much better chance if you win league.”

Iola High Jacob Rhoads may play a number of infield or outfield positions for the Mus-tangs this season, depending on need.

MORAN — Two-tenths of a second, barely longer than it takes to blink, was all that separated Carlos Gonzales from a trip to the state track meet last year.

Instead, he wound up just short in the 200-meter dash.

The Marmaton Valley High senior has plenty of motivation to earn a berth at state in Wichita in 2013, head coach Kent Houk said.

He also has plenty of company from a number of athletes looking to thrive on the track and in the field.

The Wildcats sport a 19-member track team this

year, including:— Lucas Hamlin, senior,

will throw the discus.— Daylen Houk, senior,

comes to the track team after playing the last two years on the Wildcat base-ball squad. He will run sprints and jumps.

— Marcus Miller, senior, is a distance runner, hav-ing starred for the Wildcat cross country team.

— Sophomore Trent John-son will throw the javelin.

— Sophomore Wyatt Bol-inger will run distance races and join the 4x800-meter re-lay squad. He will join Houk, Chance Stevenson and Ham-lin on the relay team.

— Junior Garrett Booth, another cross country stal-wart, will run distance rac-es and relays.

— Freshman Brady New-man earned plenty of gold in the long jump at the middle school level. Houk expects big things from him this year as well.

On the girls’ side, fresh-man Mackenzie Tynon will compete in the 200-meter dash and high jump. She may also dabble in other jumping events.

Junior Ashtynn Louk has thrived at distance rac-es, Houk said. She also will compete in the long jump.

Marmaton Valley’s sea-son opens today at Altoona.

MORAN — The senior tandem of Kacie Shadden and Kaitlin En-sminger will lead the Marmaton Valley High softball squad in 2013.

The duo earned Three Rivers League honors in 2012 and will be counted on to lead the short-hand-ed Wildcat squad this season.

With only 10 girls on the squad, the team has little margin for er-ror, head coach Brenda Mills said.

“We’re pretty young overall and inexperienced, especially at pitch-er,” Mills said. “A couple of the younger girls are willing to give it a try. All the girls want to be here to play, so we want this season to be a positive experience for them. Their sportsmanship, teamwork and a willingness to improve their own skills will be the key to our

positive outcome. They put the team ahead of themselves, playing positions they don’t necessarily like, but the team needs to come first.”

Shadden, a senior, is a three-year starter for the Wildcats. En-sminger is a junior. Both earned TRL honors.

They’ll be joined by returning players Tabitha Ford and MaRyiah Cavender.

“These girls can play anywhere on the field and have shown talent at the plate,” Mills said.

Cavender and Emily Boyd both pitched in 2012 and will get long looks this season.

MORAN — In order to suc-ceed in 2013, the Marmaton Valley High baseball team will rely on a mixture of tal-ented returning players and plenty of youth.

What the Wildcats won’t have is depth. Marmaton Valley will suit up only 11 players.

Head coach Derek Scharff sees that as an opportunity.

“Everyone will get an op-portunity to get in and con-tribute this year,” Scharff said.

Four starters return from Marmaton Valley’s 2012 squad, including seniors Jimmy Frye and Cole Beck-er, who split shortstop and starting pitching duties.

“We have a veteran pitch-ing staff, and that’s usually the hardest part,” Scharff said.

Senior Ryan Smith will handle third base duties, while junior Sage Hall will play second base and catch.

“We expect these guys to bring leadership to our

team,” Scharff said. “All of them have been starting since they were freshmen. They have a great work eth-ic. We hope that it carries over to our younger players.”

Marmaton Valley will start at least four freshmen this year, Scharff said.

Others who bring experi-ence to the team include ju-nior Levi Ramsey and Chris Bowman, who served pri-marily as a designated hitter

in some games and a pinch hitter in others.

“He didn’t play much in the field, but we expect him to step in and be a starting outfielder this year,” Scharff said.

The freshman contingent consists of Austin Deer, who will serve as backup catcher and outfielder on other days.

“He has a lot to learn, but he will have to be ready,” Scharff said.

Keagan Boyd will play ei-ther in the outfield or infield, depending on who is pitch-ing or catching. “He’s a good athlete and capable of play-ing any position we need him to,” Scharff said.

Jacob Kress also will play either in the infield or out-field. Gage Adams will be in-serted into the starting role at first base, while Mark Wag-goner will play the outfield.

“All these young guys work hard and listen well,” Scharff said. “I expect they will step right in and help us compete.”

HUMBOLDT — Hum-boldt High’s baseball team was one game away from the pinnacle in 2012, settling for third place in the Class 3A state base-ball tournament.

That remaining hurdle leaves the team plenty hun-gry for 2013, in which Hum-boldt returns its entire starting lineup to a squad that went 25-1 last year.

“We have very high expectations for this up-coming season,” Hum-boldt head coach Mike Miller said. “Last year was a great experience for our team, but I think our guys are hungry to improve on that finish. I expect us to be much im-

proved offensively to go with our solid pitching staff.”

The pitching staff will be anchored by the one-two punch of Nathan Whitcomb and Grayson Pearish, who combined to go 17-1 for the Cubs.

Whitcomb compiled a 10-1 record with a 1.17 ERA with 64 strikeouts. Pearish, meanwhile, went 8-0 with a 0.73 ERA with 50 strikeouts.

Both earned all Tri-Valley League honors, as did shortstop Hunter Murrow, who batted .438 with 25 RBIs and 19 sto-len bases, and outfielder Caleb Vanatta, who bat-ted .397 with 18 RBIs and

17 stolen bases.Whitcomb will play

third base when he’s not on the mound, while Pearish will play as-sorted positions in the infield.

Others returning for Humboldt include soph-omore outfielder Zach Vanatta, sophomore first baseman and outfielder Jacob Carpenter, pitcher and infielder Austin Bee-man, junior catcher and utility player Alex Mur-row, junior outfielder Caleb D’Armond, sopho-more infielder Kason Sie-mens and junior outfield-er Ryan Huse.

“Our strength will once again be our pitch-

ing staff,” Miller said. “It was the most consis-tent aspect of our team last year. At times, we struggled at the plate, but I look to be much im-proved on offense.”

In ringing up their sparkling record, Hum-boldt rolled through with a TVL and regional championship.

Miller expects Burling-ton to be much improved. “Neodesha will be tough as always. I think every-one will be much im-proved for league.”

Humboldt’s march back to a potential state tournament berth begins today at home against Neodesha.

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s softball team has unfinished business to take care of in 2013.

The Lady Cubs rolled through the sea-son with a 22-0 record before dropping a 5-3 heart-breaker to Pittsburg Colgan in the Class 3A regional final to end their season short of the state tournament.

The Lady Cubs will return a strong core of players to the 2013 squad with the hopes of making it one step further — to the state tournament.

Leading the charge are sophomore shortstop Breanna Kline, who earned all league and all state honors last year, and all-lead third baseman Kayle Rieb-el, a junior.

They’ll be joined by returning start-ers Haley Riebel, junior center fielder, junior catcher Morgan Morris and sophomore pitcher Jaci Ross. Senior Megan Herder will play first base. Kas-ey Beeman will catch.

Senior Julie Seibert returns to the squad after missing the 2012 season due to illness.

“I expect her to add to our offense,”

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s track team is primed to haul in plenty of hardware in 2013.

Led by four-time state med-alist Tanner McNutt, the Cubs offer a number of returning stalwarts in multiple events.

McNutt is the reigning Class 3A 800-meter champion, having run the fastest time of any class last May at the state track meet in Wichita.

He also earned a silver medal in the 400-meter dash, a third-place medal in the long jump and a fourth-place medal as part of Humboldt’s 4x400-meter relay team.

McNutt also is the Tri-Val-ley League and regional cham-pion in the triple jump.

He’s joined by relay team-mates Hayden Boring, Nick Keazer and Ethan Bartlett in 2013.

Humboldt’s strength goes beyond that, head coach Eric Carlson noted.

“We have a very good core

of returning athletes who will help the new additions to our team,” Carlson said. “We have some returnees who have state experience. They can show the younger kids the hard work it takes to make it to state.”

MORAN — Improved play up and down the ros-ter is the focus for Marma-ton Valley High’s youthful golf team.

The six-member team has no seniors, coach Mike McEwan noted.

Three juniors, Joey Jef-feris, Lane Hamm and Mike Swift Plaschka, and sophomore Mitch Covey will see the bulk of the varsity action.

“The juniors all im-proved over last year, and I am looking forward to

them doing well and hav-ing a good season,” McE-wan said.

Covey, meanwhile, earned the best score on the team at last season's Three Rivers League meet and advanced to the re-gional meet.

“He also has improved,” McEwan said.

Two newcomers, sopho-more Payton Wilson and freshman Sterling Lawson will see junior varsity action.

The golf season opens Monday at Erie.

clude Jocelyn Miller and Shauna Knight.

“We’re looking for them to step up to the plate, so to speak,” Mills said.

Newcomers include Makenzie Harrison, Molly Hamlin and Ashlynn Pinker-ton.

“These girls are showing great potential and working

hard,” Mills said. “All of the girls are coming to practice with enthusiasm and will-ingness to work hard. With these qualities, along with a strong focus on fundamen-tals, we are looking forward to our season.”

YATES CENTER — With eight returning starters from 2012, Yates Center High’s softball squad is looking for bigger and brighter results this season.

Just as importantly as the squad’s 9-9 record from a year ago, the Wildcats have meshed together well, head coach Joe Arell said.

“This is just a good group of girls,” Arell said. “The returning starters showed a lot of heart and a great work ethic.”

Aubrey Smith, sophomore pitcher, earned all Tri-Valley League honors in 2012, as did junior Courtney Arell, the team’s starting shortstop.

They’ll be joined by se-niors Allie Bruner, second base, Bailey Stuber, first base and outfield, and Shan-non Staats, outfield; juniors Becky Wendland, first base and outfield and Chessa Chrisman, third base, and sophomore catcher Shayna Karmann.

“This team has great pitch-ing, a rock behind the plate and a group of fielders who fly all over the field,” Coach Arell said.

In addition, five newcom-ers, four freshmen and one junior, also will look to make a mark.

Among the newcomers, Jessica Rossillon will be counted on to play both in-field and outfield, Arell said.

“She can even come in and

pitch a little when we need her to,” he said.

Arell, in his second year as head coach, is assisted by Rex McVey.

A NUMBER of upperclass-men also fill the Wildcats’ baseball roster.

Seniors are Anthony Keenan, Alex Waddell, Gar-rison Hall, James Gill and Kevin Morey.

Juniors on the roster are

Brett McGee, Robert Ar-nold, Trevor Chism, Jaden Knoblock, Dalton Sicka and Damien King.

Sophomores are Justin Rossillon, Dalton McQuis-ton, Blake Rutherford, Mi-cah Taylor, Eli Spencer and Michael Weber.

Incoming freshmen are Ty Spencer, Jacob Fulton, Brad-ley Spears and Drey Estes.

The baseball team is coached by Tim Jones.

Yates Center opens the 2013 campaign today at Uniontown.

THE YATES CENTER golf team is short on numbers, but long on success.

Junior Nick Schemper highlights the four-man squad, having qualified last year as a sophomore for the state sand greens golf tour-nament.

Joining Schemper are newcomers Eric Updegrove, Micah Cantrell and Derrick Heslop.

Head coach Kevin Barnes said Yates Center’s regular season, featuring tourna-ments at several regular courses, should serve the team well if and when the golfers make it to state.

THE WILDCATS have 20 athletes on the 2013 track squad, 10 boys and 10 girls.

The boys roster has Cea-ton Cooper, Kaleb DeNoon, Myles Dice, Bryce Leon, Drake Busteed, Austin Mc-Nett, Mason Hartwig, Brett Holloway, Tyler Keenan and Drew Pringle.

On the girls team are Paige Steinforth, Mindi Holloway, Rylie Albert, Katelyn Hatch, Nikki Acklin, Ashley Prin-gle, Darcen Collins, Makayla Bishop, Makayla Jones and Molly Dice.

LE ROY — A small but hearty contingent of athletes will head-line Southern Coffey County High’s 2013 track and field season.

The Titan squad will have 11 returning lettermen, five on the girls side; six on the boys.

“We have an excel-lent group of young ath-letes to work with this year,” SCC head coach Jeff True said. “The few upperclassmen that we have will be good leaders for the younger ones. They have a good work ethic.”

Among the key per-formers is senior Sar-ah Webb, who quali-

fied for the state track meet in 2012 in the high jump.

Martyna Hegwald ran the hurdles last year, while Myranda Hegwald threw the dis-cus.

On the boys side, Charlie Patterson will run sprints for the Titans. Aaron True will throw the javelin, while Walker Harred will throw the shot put and discus.

Freshman Hunter Pankey is expected to make noise for SCC in the long jump.

The Titan squad is in Altoona today for the Altoona-Midway Invi-tational.
