All projects in the $2.7 billion Phase I of our Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) have been launched; and the majority of this investment will be in the City’s Southeast Community.

Since last fall, the project teams have been evaluating how to improve the biosolids treatment process at the Southeast Plant as well as the aging pipelines and pump stations that bring flows to the Plant. Our goal is to make our sewer system as reliable as possible, and truly a community asset, as Bayview neighbors and businesses plan for the future.

Later this spring, you’ll hear about the treatment alternatives for the new Biosolids Digester Facilities project that will help improve performance and address odors and other neighborhood considerations.

This fall, we’ll be asking for your input on the “look and feel” of the new, modern digesters including: siting, access, traffic patterns, aesthetics, and the best way to integrate into the community.

This past winter was one of the driest winters on record. To help with the City’s water conservation efforts, the SFPUC is offering free faucet aerators, water-efficient showerheads, and Water-Wise Gardening Guidebooks to help you reduce your water consumption. These tools are available for pick-up at SFPUC Customer Service Department, 525 Golden Gate Avenue, Monday through Friday, from 8:00am - 5:00pm.

Please call us to participate in a free water conservation home evaluation, facilitated by a trained water conservation specialist. They will help detect costly plumbing leaks, and show you ways to conserve our Hetch Hetchy drinking water.

In upgrading the sewer pipelines connecting to the Plant, we are focusing on the Channel force main—a pressurized line that carries 60% of the Bayside flows and has failed several times. You’ll hear more this summer about how we plan to improve this conveyance line and the pump stations that work with it.

In early 2013, a group of Bayview residents and business leaders gathered to create a group called Resilient Bayview, to help make the Bayview an increasingly great place to live, work and visit following any possible emergency or disaster.

Since its inception, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has worked closely with the leaders of Resilient Bayview to help support this vision. Recently, the SFPUC began holding preliminary stakeholder conversations with leaders from groups such as Resilient Bayview to discuss the various SSIP projects in the area. Five Keys Named Best Charter School Community leaders from around the city came together to celebrate the Phelps Wing Opening and new anchor tenant Five Keys Charter School, a program of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
