Kick Off Speaker: Jim Hole:

Explaining what makes plants tick is Jim’s specialty, and he

does it without ever losing sight of the beauty and wonder that

make gardening enjoyable. Jim is Alberta’s most articulate horticulturist – and one of the most knowledgeable. He is ar-dent about plants, conserva-

tion, the environment and busi-ness. His passion inspires audi-

ence members to “get down and dirty” and to regenerate their lives through gardening. His humor and his engaging

spirit are legendary.

POTATOES

Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other, and finally they got married and had a little sweet potato, which they called 'Yam.' Of course, they wanted the best for Yam. When it was time, they told her about the facts of life. They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato,' and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots. Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into the sack and make a rotten potato out of her! But on the other hand she wouldn't stay home and become a Couch Potato either. She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring cousins. When she went off to Europe, Mr and Mrs. Potato told Yam to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland, and the greasy guys from France called the French Fries. Yam said she would stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn't associate with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all the trucks that say, 'Frito Lay.' Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that's Potato University) so that when she graduated she'd really be in the Chips. Yet, in spite of all they did for her, one-day Yam came home and announced she was going to marry Tom Brokaw. Tom Brokaw! Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset. They told Yam she couldn't possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he's just a commentator. FLOWERS

Two friars are having trouble paying off the belfry, so they open a florist shop. Everyone wants to buy flowers from the men of God so business is quickly booming. The florist across town sees a huge drop in sales and asks the two friars to close their shop, but they refused. A month later the florist begs the friars to close because he’s having trouble feeding his family. Again, they refuse, so the florist hires Hugh McTaggert. Hugh is the roughest, toughest thug in town and is hired to “persuade” the friars to close. Hugh asks the friars to close their florist shop. When they refuse, he threatens to beat them up and wreck their shop every day they remain open, so they close. This proves once again that Hugh and only Hugh can prevent florist friars.

The Rural Community Books are a great source of information and reminiscing for our residents.

Our Town is Celebrat-ing it’s 100th Birth-day this year and so there are many com-munity events to at-tend. In Reading I have taken to read-ing some interesting

stories form our Com-munity Book. Some Residents have even written in it a decade or two ago, giving new incite into their lives. Of course we find the most interest-ing stories gleaned from it’s pages are the ones where a community member will recall how they or

their parents farmed or lived and traveled – stories of pulling the cars through the mud field in-between home and the road with a horse team.

Get out your communities books, enjoy reading and the conversation that follows.

PHYSICAL—REDUCE THE RISK OF DIABETES

READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE AT: http://www.eldergym.com/elderly-diabetes.html Exercise by itself is not the way to treat diabetes. Your care plan should include working closely with your doctor to achieve a balance between medication, diet and exercise Diabetics should try to avoid exercising in weather that is too hot or too cold because they are especially susceptible to heat or cold injury Diabetics should also avoid exercises that may increase their blood pressure including overhead arm work, stressful isometric exercise and heavy weights. This is very important for those with retinal problems. Those with elderly diabetes should generally avoid aerobic classes that perform high impact movements. Certainly if you have retinal problems, foot ulcers, or peripheral neuropathy this jarring movement is not good. If you have obtained medical clearance for exercise you may follow any generally safe senior exercise class format with a slow progression. Make sure you space out your workout over the week to maintain the positive exercise benefit of increased insulin sensitivity. http://www.everydayhealth.com/diabetes/how-exercise-affects-glucose.aspx

Tips for Exercising When You Use Insulin

Vary your routine. To get the most out of your workouts, aim to do a combination of aerobic exercises, strength

training, and stretching. Talk with your doctor, who can help you devise an exercise routine that will be safe

and effective for you.

Time it right. Depending on your daily schedule and insulin plan, you may need to exercise at certain times dur-

ing the day, and avoid exercising at others. Your diabetes care team can help you determine when the best

times would be for you to exercise.

PHYSICAL

can be reduced by healthy lifestyle choices, such as con-trolling the diet, not smoking and losing excess weight and exercising. Weight loss of 5% to 10% -- or about 4.5 to 9 kg (10 to 20 lbs.) for a 90-kg

(200-lb.) person -- has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of diabetes.

Aggressive Behavior offends or isolates someone else’s rights Aggression can sometimes be an expression of fear, lack of self-esteem, or inability to control a situation in any other way.

Avoidance Behavior is sometimes used to evade any confrontation People can become very adept at avoiding uncomfortable situations, either through refusal to recognize the problem or by deliberately side stepping confrontational situations.

Accommodating Behavior or Submissive lets you reduce anxiety, guilt or fear by letting your views or thoughts be misconstrued, ignored or lets you be taken advantage of. Submissive behavior often leads to a build up of resentment which can show itself in loss of self-esteem or an eventual aggressive outburst.

Assertive Behavior True assertive behavior involves protecting your space and rights whilst not Isolating another person’s rights or space. It relies on honest, direct and appropriate expression of needs, wants or feelings as a first, not a last resort. The mutual acceptance of each other’s position leads to more open and fruitful communication. Assertive behavior is often thought of as a Win Win situation where both parties in the communication process benefit from increased effectiveness.

Great website complete with Activities and Group Discussion Questions... I am going to try and work some of this information into my Programming! Chris Reimer

Stigma and discrimina-tion are still very pervasive in our communities, in our families, in our workplaces, and in our schools. It takes a lot of courage for individuals to open up about mental illness. Everyone who attended heard some mental health facts that perhaps they weren't aware of. A small selection being: 80% of mental illnesses and mental health issues begin during childhood; however most parents don't want to over-react. This however, can lead to under recognizing. 1 in 5 children get the health care they need. That means that 4 of 5 children are suffering. It also means that 1 in 5 people suffer from a mental health issue or mental illness throughout their lives. So whether it is you personally, your significant other, child, family member, co-worker, friend, etc, everyone is affected by mental health problems The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will become the #2 cause worldwide of years lost to disability. The number of suicides in Canada is almost 4,000 people per year. For people aged 15-24 in Can-ada, suicide is the #2 cause of death. Mental illness costs the Canadian economy a staggering $51 billion a year, and each day 500,000 people will miss work due to mental health problems.

Mental illness is the number one cause of disability in Canada, accounting for nearly 30% of disability claims and 70% of total costs. Mental health disorders in the workplace cost Canadian companies nearly

14% of their net annual profits and up to $16 billion annually.

Good bye Grandma I Love You

I was 18, in-between College and finding work when I got the call- my Grandma was very sick. I had lived her as a child, she taught me to love tea and toast. She introduced me to the Bible and read me little Bible Stories each night. I quickly packed the fixings for soup

apartment to prepare for work. I have always regretted that decision. I didn’t have the courage to ask if I could start next week. I wasted the one opportunity for a last visit with my Grandmother. Regrets drive home lessons-learned. I would soon trust in her God, and learned to listen and follow God’s still small voice—so I can live with no regrets. Chris

SPIRITUAL– LIFE’S JOURNEYWITH NO REGRETS

I looked on the Web and what I found was a mount load of many belief system on saying good-bye... http://heavensrollcall.com/ is a website that combine magnificent photos and poetry on a number of topics, read carefully so it says what you are trying to express to someone… When I think of saying goodbye, especially to a Lodge Resident… I think… What were they like as a child, a teen, a young adult, middle aged, elderly? What happened in their life that shaped them into yesterdays resident? Were they loved as a child? Who was their favourite aunt or friend? Did they fall out of a tree, or get hurt along life's journey? What did they believe, spiritually, philosophically, what made them who they were? Did they marry? How is their spouse, their children, grans and great grans? Did they travel, throughout their life? Where did they live? Were they adventuresome, in activities, hobbies, or food? What made them laugh wholeheartedly? What did they treasure? What would they do on a warm sunny day that was care free? What were their dreams? Were they fulfilled? Did they have a bucket list? Was is filled with adventure? Did they achieve it? What did they leave unsaid? What task did they leave undone? Did they have any regrets? Were they afraid or at peace in their last moments? Was God their to Welcome them home? Was He a welcomed part of their life? As I look up photos I’ve taken of the resident I reflect on these questions, it helps me let go.

I give the DVD of photos to their family, and pray that as they look through the photos it will bring comfort to their family.

40-Year Difference When I was a 20-something college student, I became quite friendly with my study partner, a 64-year-old man, who had returned to school to finish his degree. He confessed, with a wink, that he had once thought more than friendship might be a pos-sibility between us. "So what changed your mind?" I asked him. "I went to my doctor and asked if he thought a 40-year age difference be-tween a man and woman was insurmountable. He looked at my chart and said, 'You're interested in someone who's 104?'"

Praying Boy Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents' house. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers. The youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs, "I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE. I PRAY FOR A NEW NINTENDO. I PRAY FOR A NEW DVD PLAYER..." The older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf." To which the little brother replied, "No, but Gramma is!"

Cute Baby When we brought our new-born son to the pe-diatrician for his first checkup, the doctor said, "You have a cute baby." Smiling, I said, "I'll bet you say that to all the new parents." "No," he replied, "just to those whose babies are really good-looking." "So what do you say to the others?" I asked. "He looks just like you."
