FFrom Your Pastor . . .rom Your Pastor . . . Dear Church Family,

Every once in a while I am reminded by someone that sometimes the giving track on our offering envelopes can be a bit cryptic. While I really try not to bore the people around me by repeating things over and over, this is one subject that needs to be reviewed and re-explained from time to time. I’ll not review the complete history of how we came to have the three different boxes for you to check on your envelope; suffice it to say, we really are Baptist and as Baptist we believe there are some things that only you and God can work out together. The first box on your envelope is marked WM I. That stands for World Missions 1. It means that the portion of your offering that leaves Abingdon Baptist Church to support missions on the state level and beyond will be sent to the Baptist General Association for distribution at a ratio commonly known as ―The Old SBC Percentage.‖ That means that out of every dollar of regular offering you give to the General Fund of Abingdon Baptist Church $0.13 is sent to the Treasurer of the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). If you have check the WM 1 box the Treasurer of the BGAV will keep 66% of your $0.13 to use for Virginia Baptist Mission and He will send the remaining 34% to the Executive Committee of The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in Nashville to be distributed according to the budget approved at the annual convention. The second box on your offering envelope is marked WM II. You can probably guess that it stands for World Mission 2. This particular choice is the ―default.‖ If you choose not to mark your offering envelope, the formula prescribed under WM 2 will automatically be applied to your gift. If you check this box, 13% of your gift to the regular offering of Abingdon Baptist Church is sent to the Treasurer of Baptist General Association of Virginia. Fund marked WM 2 will be distributed by the treasurer using slightly different percentages. The Treasurer of the BGAV will keep 72% of your 13% to use for Virginia Baptist Missions Work. He will send the remaining 28% to the Executive Committee of The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in Nashville. The funds sent to the SBC have specific instructions about how they are to be used. Instruction for the disbursal of the funds sent to the treasurer of the SBC under WM 2, are very specific and very different from the budget approved by the SBC. For instance Virginia Baptists have weighted disbursal instructions more towards missions and less towards SBC Seminaries. For a more complete picture of the differences, please contact the church office for a brochure detailing the comparisons. Or consult the BGAV website at www.VBMB.org. There is one more box on your offering envelope. Unfortunately, I’m out of room this week. Stay tuned and I’ll try to finish up in future columns. I’ll see you Sunday. Your pastor,

Steven
