Umyalezo ovela kuSekela-Ngqonyela
On behalf of the CPUT community I would like to congratulate each member of the graduating class of 2015.
Today we honour your success and acknowledge the hard work and sacrifices that you made to reach this milestone in your life. This year we have much to celebrate as your graduation coincides with the institution’s 10th anniversary celebrations. Over the past decade we have seen thousands of students graduate, made history by launching Africa’s first nanosatellite, rolled out new and exciting
qualifications, revamped our campuses and operations and filed a number of patents. We have so much to be proud of and are grateful that you have been part of this important journey. As you stand on the brink of entering the next journey of your life, I want to encourage each of you to make the most of your qualification and to continue to develop and apply in your working lives the integrity, curiosity and creativity with which you approached your studies. I also urge you to never forget where you came from and to give back to your community. Share the ideals, competencies and a
commitment to serving the common good, which have been integral to your education at the University.
I would like to thank the University staff, parents, family and friends, for assisting each one of you on your journey during these defining years. Their contribution is celebrated as well. Lastly, always remember that the University is your alma mater. Continue to do us proud. It is our wish to maintain a lifelong relationship with each one of you.
Congratulations. We are proud to welcome you to our alumni community.

Nnenna Eme Ukandu grew up in
Umuahia in Abia State of Nigeria.
She obtained her Bachelor degree in
Agricultural Science at the University
of Calabar, in Cross River State,
Nigeria in 1995, and graduated
with an Honours Degree in Animal
Science in 2000. She later obtained
a Postgraduate Diploma in Business
Management while working with Abia
State Electoral Commission as an
Administrative Officer, recruiting and
training ad hoc workers.
On arrival in South Africa in 2006,
she registered for MTech in Business
Management after which she enrolled
for her Doctoral studies in Human
Resource Management while she
provided lectures on a part-time basis
at the Certified Institute of Bookkeepers
and Accountants.
The subject of Ukandu’s DTech thesis
is a comparative assessment of the
utilisation of electronic human resource
management systems as a decision-
making tool by selected South African
and Nigerian Universities. Utilising
the mixed method, and examining
six universities – three in South Africa
and another three in Nigeria. Ukandu
found, among others, that two reasons
account for universities’ inability to
fully adopt the E-HRM. These include
insufficient IT workforce, and support
infrastructure. Electronic human
resource management system is a
system that is used by the human
resource practitioners to automate
their work functions and improve
work efficiency. A key result of her
doctoral work is a model for proper
implementation and utilisation of E-HRM
as a decision-making tool for human
resource management functions at
universities.
There is no doubt that practitioners and
scholars will benefit from the model.
Ukandu has shared some of the
findings in the doctoral study with
several audiences at international
conferences. She currently has six
publications in peer-reviewed journals.

TITLE: EDUCATING FOR EMPLOYABILITY IN OFFICE ENVIRONMENTS
Shairn Hollis-Turner was born in
Cape Town and spent ten years
in the business sector prior to
taking up the position of Head of
Department of Business Studies
at an FET college in Guguletu.
She currently holds the position
of head of research for the Office
Management and Technology
Department and is an academic
in the Faculty of Business and
Management Sciences at CPUT.
She is a researcher in the Work-
integrated Learning Unit at Cape
Peninsula University of Technology
and has collaborated on a number
of research projects around the
convergence of curriculum with
workplace needs, using a social
realist theoretical framework known as
‘Legitimation Code Theory’.
Her workplace and twenty-one years of
lecturing experience in higher education
has inspired her research focus into
curriculum development and the
challenges facing the higher education
system to meet the demands of the
dynamic workplace.
The purpose of this study was to
investigate the contribution of higher
education to the work readiness of
graduates within a diploma curriculum
at a University of Technology. This
thesis argues that employability is
enhanced by the programme and its
content.
Diversity and transformation demands
on higher education require that all
Universities of Technology revisit
and redesign their qualifications
and curricula in order to meet the
challenges facing the higher education
system in the 21st century. The study
focused on the knowledge bases
of the current and new Diplomas in
Office Management curricula, and how
these were aligned with the broader
aim of enhancing the employability of
graduates. The theoretical framework
draws on three dimensions of Maton’s
(2000) Legitimation Code Theory. These
dimensions are Autonomy, Semantics
and Specialisation, which allow for the
analysis of the Office Management
curriculum to enable the researcher
to develop an understanding of the
professional knowledge bases of the
curriculum.
The use of Legitimation Code Theory
determined the multi-method approach
used to include the views of graduates,
employers and academics, who were
able to bring their own experiences,
expectations, concerns and
perspectives into the research process.
The methods of data collection included
Delphi surveys, documentary data from
minutes of DACUM and curriculum
workshops, curricular documents and
course material, third-year student
and alumni surveys, and interview
documentation with academics from
international and local institutions.
The analysis of data utilising the
dimensions of the Legitimation Code
Theory established that the emphasis
is on the practical and contextual
components of the Office Management
curriculum, and that the knowledge
base of office management work
is that of professional service and
support. The findings of this research
have contributed to the recurriculation
process of the new Diploma in Office
Management. It has provided an
understanding of the knowledge base
of the Office Management curriculum
and guidelines for the curricular
arrangement for the training and
education of office administrators.
Universities of Technology will therefore
gain a better understanding of what
constitutes powerful professional
knowledge in the Office Management
curricula to support the employability
of graduates for the mutual benefit of
students and potential employers. The
thesis advances a corrective to the lack
of seriousness with which the work of
office administrators has been taken in
the past, and aims to raise the level of
debate and research into this field of
practice.

FACULTY OF EDUCATION
SUBETHRA PATHERMEd
DOCTORATE IN EDUCATION
SUPERVISORS:Prof Rajendra Chetty
TITLE: PRE-ENTRY ACADEMIC AND NON-ACADEMIC FACTORS INFLUENCING TEACHER EDUCATION STUDENTS’ FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Subethra Pather is an academic
development coordinator and lecturer
in the Faculty of Education at CPUT.
Her research focus includes teacher
education, student support and the
first-year experience. The uniqueness
of this study is the foregrounding of
the voices of students with regard to
their first-year university experience.
The purpose of the investigation was
to address the challenges of high
student dropout, low throughput,
and poor graduation rates in higher
education.
The focus of the study was influenced
by the candidate’s own experiences
in higher education. Pather was born
in Durban, she is a first-generation
university student and grew up within
an extended family environment.
Her habitus was parallel to those of
the participants in the study and it
provided a deeper reflective engagment
with how limited social and cultural
capital created challenges in the
transitioning from school to university. A
paradigmatic approach to the students’
life narratives was taken to capture
not only the specific, personal, and
highly contextualised elements of their
individual stories, but also to determine
associations, draw cause-and-effect
relationships, and test and validate the
research assumptions.
The study was designed within the
qualitative research paradigm and
employed a case study strategy to
collect both quantitative and qualitative
data. The quantitative approach included
a questionnaire and qualitative data was
obtained from one-on-one and focus-
group interviews with eight purposively
selected participants. The conceptual
framework developed for this enquiry
considered the significance of student
diversity in understanding first-year
experience and employed concepts from
two sociological models, Tinto’s (1975;
1993) integration model (social and
academic integration) and Bourdieu’s
(1984; 1990) theoretical tools of capital,
habitus and field. Six key themes
emerged from the data: determination,
self-reliance, fitting-in, out-of-habitus
experience, positioning oneself to
succeed, and challenges.
The unequal distribution of economic,
social and cultural capital created
disparities between students’ habitus
and schooling experiences which
influenced the way they integrated into
their first year at university. The study
revealed that more mature students
than school-leavers and gap-students
are entering higher education. Further,
the majority of first-year students are
unable to fund their studies and source
external funding or engage in part-time
employment. Students pursued financial
aid before focusing on academic
activities. Engagement in the social
domain remained marginal. Students’
determination to change their economic
circumstances was the primary factor
that influenced their attitudes and
actions at university.
Higher education needs to consider
student diversity, financial constraints
of disadvantaged students, first-year
curriculum planning and delivery, and
the high cost of university studies. A
paradigm shift from viewing students
within a deficit model is recommended.
More appropriately, universities should
capitalise on the students’ qualities of
determination, optimism, enthusiasm
and openness to learning, thereby
creating an inclusive first-year experience
that could enhance retention and
student success.

TITLE: BIODEGRADATION OF POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON CONTAMINANTS IN A MIXED CULTURE BIOREACTOR
DOCTOR TECHNOLOGIAE: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Olusola Solomon Amodu was born
and raised in Ikaram-Akoko, Ondo
State, South-West Nigeria, where
he completed his primary and
secondary education. He proceeded
to study Chemical Engineering
at the Ahmadu Bello University,
Nigeria, where he completed a BEng
degree in Chemical Engineering in
2003, and an MSc degree in 2007,
also in Chemical Engineering, from
the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
He immediately joined the service
of Lagos State Polytechnic as a
lecturer, where he worked for four
years before the commencement of
his Doctoral studies in 2012 at CPUT.
The subject of Olusola’s doctoral
research focused on the bioremediation
of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs) in silty soil, using biosurfactants
and recoverable magnetic
nanocomposite zeolites. Although,
the research problem was based
on a widely studied and persistent
problem of environmental pollution
by hydrophobic organic pollutants,
Olusola’s research focused on cost
effective measures which can be
applied in-situ.
The results from the research showed
that:
1) biosurfactants can be exclusively
produced using novel isolates and
Beta vulgaris agrowaste without
supplementation with refined nutrient
sources,
2) such biosurfactants can be used
to formulate stable emulsions of
various hydrophobic contaminants
under ambient conditions for more
than a year,
3) high molecular weight PAHs
can be biodegraded using novel
biocatalysts having biosurfactant
producing capabilities,
4) biosurfactant modified recoverable
magnetic nanocomposite zeolites,
are able to further accelerate PAH
degradation rates in-situ.
Overall, the research generated five
manuscripts, two of which have
been published with three under
consideration for publication, a book
chapter, and three international
conference proceedings. All three
examiners awarded the thesis a
mark averaging more than 80%, with
commendations on the undertaken
experimental programme.
Amodu was awarded a merit doctoral
scholarship for international students by
the Faculty of Engineering during 2014.
He is a professional engineer and a
registered member of many professional
bodies including the Council for the
Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria,
Institute of Chemical Engineers (UK) and
the South African Institution of Chemical
Engineers.

DOCTOR TECHNOLOGIAE: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
Ali Mustafa Almaktoof grew up in
Surman City in Libya. He received
his BSc from Al-Tahady University
in Libya in 2001 and MSc from the
University of Tripoli in Libya in 2008,
all in Electrical Engineering.
After he received his MSc he
worked as a lecturer in Az-Zawiya
University in Libya, where he taught
at undergraduate level in the
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
department. He lectured in Power
System Engineering, Electrical
Machines I & II, Electrical Machines
Laboratory, Power Electronics and
Power System Analysis. He also
supervised some BSc student
projects.
He registered for his Doctoral studies
in 2013 in electrical engineering at
CPUT, in the field of power electronics
technology. His research topic was
“Multilevel inverters using Finite-Set
Model Predictive Current Control
(FSMPCC) for Renewable Energy
Systems applications”, where he
developed new algorithms for
FSMPCC. This strategy allowed for
fast load current control while keeping
the balance of the DC-link capacitor
and flying capacitor voltages intact.
He has successfully reduced the
computational effort which gives rise
to multiple possibilities in multilevel
inverters. The delicate scenario of
balancing the capacitor voltage and
output current reference tracking for
multilevel converters with different
case conditions were achieved
with ease in the outcome of the
research. His research work resulted
in an impressive twenty national/
international conferences and journal
publications, including 2 best paper
awards.

Doreen Kainyu Mugendi (née Kaura)
grew up in Tharaka Nithi Kenya.
After completing the O levels at
Muthambi girl’s high school with a
B-average, Doreen joined the Kenya
Medical Training College, where she
attained a registered community
health and midwifery diploma.
She pursued a Bachelor’s degree in
nursing science (BNS) at the University
of Botswana where she excelled with
a suma cum laude in 2005. In 2011
she obtained her Masters degree in
Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal
Science from the University of the
Western Cape. She is the head of
midwifery and neonatal nursing at
Stellenbosch University. Doreen
pursued her doctorate with fulltime
employment and running a family in a
record time of three years, from 2012
to 2015.
The subject of her dissertation
is a framework for information
communication that contributes to
the improved management of the
intrapartum period. The development
of the framework was made possible
through the analysis of work activities
within the midwifery obstetric units
(MOU’s) and between the MOUs and
the referral hospitals, using the activity
driven approach as a theoretical
lens. The study revealed that what is
expected to be communicated by the
skilled birth attendants is not what is
actually being communicated.
The contribution of her research is a
multi-disciplinary study of informatics
in the domain of health sciences in a
developing context. Her knowledge
of health informatics contributes to
an area that is undeveloped in South
Africa and considers the use of
technology mediated work practices in
midwifery.
On a practical level her contributions
could assist in improving the
information and communication
practices during the intrapartum
period; her contribution on a
theoretical level is a proposed
information and communication
framework for effective management of
the intrapartum period that she derived
from her thematic analysis as well as
from using activity driven information
systems development model and
activity analysis development as
additional analysis lenses. Her
methodological contribution is the
incorporation of her data collection
from interviews and observations of
work practices in real-life sensitive
situations and analysing these with
different theoretical methods.
