    Many ammunition identifiations sound similar. Make

    sure you use te rit alier/sie ammunition in your

    firearm.

    1. Thumb Safety - Some XD models are euippedwit a tum safety wi an e operated y ot

    rit and left anded sooters (amidextrous). Tistum safety sould e atiated weneer te pistol

    is loaded and deatiated only wen ready to fire.Te tum safety is atiated y pressin te leer

    upward to te "safe" or "on" position (See Fiure15-1). Wen te tum safety is atiated, te firin

    meanism is loked preentin te firearm from

    firin. Te tum safety, wen atiated, also lokste slide in its forward most position, preentin it

    from moin.

    To fire te pistol, te tum safety leer is depresseddownward to te "fire" position. After firin, alwaysre-atiate te tum safety.

    Wen te tum safety is deatiated(See Fiure 15-2) te firearm will fire as te rip

    safety is depressed and te trier is pulled.

    NOTE: ThE ThUMb SAFETY cAN bE AcTIvATED IF

    4. Striker Block Safety - As an added safety feaan internal striker lok will preent te firear

    trigger is pulled.

    3. Grip Safety - Te rip safety is loated at te top rearof te firearm rip. (See Fiure 17-1.) Te rip safety

    must e depressed to e deatiated (See Fiure17-2.) Unless te rip safety is properly depressed

    and deatiated, te firearm will not fire een if tetrier is pulled. grip safety must also e depressed

    to allow slide to e pulled to te rear. Te rip safety

    is desined to e deatiated wen te firearm isproperly ripped to fire. To fire te firearm you must

    properly old te firearm, and depress te rip safety,deatiate te tum safety (if euipped),

    ammunition for your firearm. Plae rim of firstartride on front of follower. (See Fiure 18) Ten

    pus down on te follower and slide te artrideunder te lips of te maaine ompletely to te

    rear. Load suessie rounds y pusin artridedown on preiously loaded artride. Use only lean,

    dry, oriinal, i-uality, ommerially manufatured

    ammunition.

    4. Re-insert maaine into maaine well, loated

    in ottom of firearm rip. Pus firmly enou onottom of maaine to make sure it is properly

    seated. Caution: Do not slam or forcefully jam

    magazine into magazine well.

    LOADING

    Never touch the trigger whenloading or unloading the firearm.

    5. POINT FIREARM IN A SAFE DIREcTION AND KFINgER OFF TRIggER. Depress te slide stop

    allow slide to moe forward and load a sell fmaaine into te amer.

    NOTE: IF YOUR XD IS EqUIPPED WITh A ThUMSAFETY, AcTIvATE NOW.

    6. Te loaded amer indiator will e in te uposition.

    7. Te striker status indiator will e protrudin of te rear of te slide (See Pae 14) in te o

    position.

    Caution: The firearm is now ready to fire.

    BE PREPARED FOR NOISE AND RECOIL WHENFIREARM FIRES.

    CHAMBER MUSTBE EMPTY

    If slide is already in loked ak position: (SeeFiure 20.)

    FIELD STRIP

    If you decide to disassemble your Springfield Armory firearm, do so properly.

    Improper disassembly and/or assembly will create unsafe conditions that couldin injury or death or a firearm that simply will not work. Dont take chances. Do

    attempt to disassemble this or any other firearm until you have received trainininstructions from a competent pistolsmith.
