inNaturalResourcesandEcosystemConservation
Environmentalscienceisabroaddiscipline,andourexistingB.S.programattractsstudentswithawiderangeofacademicinterestsandprofessionalgoalswithintheenvironmentalsciences.Wecurrentlyhaveca.110environmentalsciencemajorsandthemajorityofthesestudentsaremostinterestedinaspectsofnaturalresourcesandecosystemconservation.Theproposedconcentrationsimplyaddsstructuretotheexistingprograminenvironmentalscience,whichisintentionallybroad,sothatstudentsspecificallyinterestedinnaturalresourcesandecosystemconservationcanfollowamoretailoredandspecificcurriculum.
Theproposedconcentrationisoptionalforstudentsthatwishtofocusmoreexclusivelyinnaturalresources.Theconcentrationretainsthesamecore,butrequiresstudentstoselectelectivesfromamorenarrowrangeofcoursesinnaturalresourcesinfivedifferentcategories.

inMedievalandEarlyModernEuropeanStudiesThisinterdisciplinaryminorwillencouragestudentengagementwithfacultyinmedievalandearlymodernfields(300-1800CE),withafocusonEuropeandacrossmultipledepartments.Theminorwillrequireaminimumof18credithours(outsideofthemajororotherminors*),andincludesanancillarylanguagerequirement.Studentswilltakeatotalof4coursesfromatleast3participatingdepartments,outsidetheirmajorrequirementsorotherminors.Relevantcourseswillbeselectedfrom:

“Everyday,theofficeoftheDepartmentofGeographyhandlesanavalancheoftelephonecalls,emails,andvisitsfromstudents,staff,vendors,andfaculty.MuchofthistrafficisdirectedtothedeskofLeighAnnFranklin,whospendsherdaysansweringquestions,directingtraffic,solvingproblems,processingdocuments,andmanagingtheoffice.Andshedoesthiswithacalmdemeanorandpleasantattitude.Thisiswhatcollegeismeanttobe.Whetherschedulingclasses,researchingprocurementissues,answeringthephones,oraddressingthemyriadofvisitorswhowalkintoouroffice,herinnerselfisrevealedthroughthesmileonherfaceandthehappinessinhervoice.Itisalmosttritetotalkaboutsomeonebeingthegluethatholdsanenterprisetogether,butinthiscasethemetaphorisspoton.LeighAnnFranklinisthegluethatholdstheDepartmentofGeographytogether.Shehasbeendoingsofor27years—andwehopethatshewillcontinuetodosoformanymore.”

Alabama-Greece Initiative
International InitiativesAlabama-Greece Initiative • Seven College faculty members visited visit Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
(AUTh) May 8-14, 2016. This is the third UA delegation to travel to AUTh after the first successful research collaboration initiative that took place in May 2014.
• College faculty presented at an Alabama-Greece Symposium held at UA on October 21, 2016 (discussing their May 2016 trip to Greece and their research/scholarship projects/partnerships).
