Helen R. Godfrey

For more than three decades, Helen Godfrey has been a leader on campus and in the community. During her tenure at UWSP, she has held a variety of administrative ro les, beginning as Associate Dean of Students, serving for 16 years as Assistant Chancellor for University Re lations and fo r the past seven years as Ass istant Chancellor for Student Affairs. She came to UWSP in 1965 from Ohio State University where she served as assistant dean of women. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees from UW- M adison and a Ph.D. in administration and higher education from Michigan State University.

At UWSP Helen's best-loved and chief constituents have always been the students. In addition to fulfilling her varied administrative duties, she taught freshman psycho logy for many years. She says her greatest pleasure has been to help young people grow to become successful world c itizens.

Among Helen's many accomplishments at UWSP are found ing and supporting the University Child Learning and Care Center (UCLCC), achieving nationa l affiliation fo r Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi (freshman and senior honor societies), charteri ng and hosting the Board of Visitors, and leading two semesters abroad to Great Britain . In addition, she formerly served as the first president of the Women's Athletic Fund for 11 years.

For her achievements in higher education, Helen has been recognized by the Academy of Letters and Science, Wisconsin Women's Interco llegiate Athletic Conference, Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel and the UCLCC. Sadly, after 34 stellar years on campus, Helen has announced her retirement this summer. Her departure from UWSP w ill leave a vo id that cannot be filled.

Chancel I or's Medal I ion and the UWSP Ceremonial Mace The Chancellor's Medallion and the UWSP Ceremonial Mace were both hand-crafted by former Art Professor Henry Runke. The medallion was cast in a I 4K yellow gold pendant in 1968 and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four sectioned areas terminating near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and terminate as prongs for the gem. The mace, carried by the grand marshal of academic processions, was completed in 1976 and has a square base on which important dates in the schools' history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the mace head which is a miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the school's symbol. The inside of the mace also includes a purple amethyst.

Special Designations: • Teal Tassels represent Alpha Kappa Delta, the national sociology honorary society.

• Colored Sashes are worn by students who have spent one or more semesters abroad and represent the host countries of UWSP's semester abroad program: Australia, England, France, Germany, Poland and Spain.

• Twisted Cords of white, black and blue are worn by students who are members of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society.
