PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome 2020! This is my first column as President and I am truly excited

about this new role. Having been involved in the pool club for a number of years, it is wonderful to become more involved in all aspects of Mooredale, an organization which has so much on offer. My own family has

incredibly fond memories of our fleeting days of Mooredale Preschool, Summer Fun camps x 3 children, Mooredale soccer x 3, (naturally), Mooredale hockey, Mooredale flag football and of course the pool! I feel like we have dabbled in just about everything Mooredale and it is no exaggeration to say that Mooredale plays a significant role in our family life. First, I wish to personally thank Alain Strati for his leadership over the past two years-big shoes to fill to be sure. We had our AGM in November of last year and elected the following Directors for 2019-2020:

President: Kedrin Case Past President: Alain Strati Treasurer: Lia Mathiesen Marketing and Sponsorship: Kirk Lynn Mayfair: Bill Deacon Mission and Strategic Plan: Julie Ritchie Membership and Database: Jason Rude Orchestras and Concerts: Christina Cavanagh Pool Club: Sylvia McGeer Preschool: Jessica Huck Program and Camp: Diane Osak Property: John Golding Soccer Club: Courtney Brown Sports: Charles Zimmerman At Large: Anh Minh Ngo

Next, Spring is an exceptionally busy time at Mooredale: our sports programming really kicks into gear with both flag football and the various soccer programs. Mayfair is just around the corner, the ultimate community event of the year. Fast on its heels, comes pool season where we are now offering our pool members new, flexible membership opportunities, (partial summer membership is now not a

problem). If you are not a Pool Club member, sign up today for the best kept secret in Toronto. Finally, all of these great events and activities would simply not exist without the support of the wonderful staff at Mooredale and the many Mooredale volunteers. So, when you register your child in a Mooredale sport, consider also stepping up as a volunteer coach or manager. One of my favorite seasons was helping coach my daughter’s soccer team, (see photo). And let us not forget Mayfair, a community event of this scale has many moving parts and only functions with the help of many volunteers. Teens need volunteer hours? Sign -up for a shift too. There are many roles to fill and an hour of your time helps enormously! If you would like to volunteer, don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or 416-922-3714 ext. 310. Mayfair 2020Bill DeaconMAYFAIR CHAIR

Mark your calendars, Mayfair 2020 is coming! We are in the planning stages for this community’s annual springtime event with friends and family at Rosedale

Park. The Mayfair Preview will be on Friday, May 8. The full all-day Mayfair will run on Saturday, May 9. Times to be confirmed. In case you haven’t been there the last few years, the Friday is a giant neighbourhood party. The carnival rides will all be running for everyone who just can’t wait until Saturday. World’s Finest Shows Carnival Food and Rides will again be operating the rides. Kids who purchased special Ride vouchers can exchange them for the Ride Bracelet to go on the WFS Rides. The Mayfair BBQ area will also be open, serving burgers, hot dogs, fries, and some special gourmet options. The Beer and Wine Garden will be operating – always a fun place to meet with friends, or bring the entire gang for dinner! Saturday morning starts with the Mayfair Parade. Kids who join in the parade will receive a special prize. Stay tuned for more details to come in the upcoming months. Saturday continues with rides for all ages from World’s Finest Shows, the Midway Games with awesome prizes, Mayfair Bingo, track and field events, the Mayfair Raffle, and the Kiddie Zone in the rink – with bouncy castles, face painting, and wacky hair – in addition to the food court, beer garden, and music on the main stage. All of this happens with the assistance of hundreds of volunteers, and we can always have more. If you can volunteer a few hours to Mayfair 2020, please call our Volunteer Hotline at (416) 922-3714 ext 310, or email us at [email protected]. We’ll be delighted to hear from you!

Friday May 8, 2020 – Times to be confirmedSaturday May 9, 2020 – Times to be confirmed

We are already excited and thinking about spring at Mooredale. Plans for Mayfair are well underway and we are looking for almost 1,000 volunteers to help make Mayfair

2020 a success. We have many opportunities for adults and students. Middle and secondary school students can receive community service hours for their time. We need students to supervise midway games, award prizes at the prize booth, create wacky hair, paint little faces, keep the BBQ stocked and sizzling and coordinate the track and field races. We need adults to help at the BBQ, sell tickets at the fairground, set up on Friday morning and take down on Saturday afternoon. If you are interested in becoming a Mayfair volunteer, we would love to hear from you. Please let us know how you can help. Please call our Volunteer Hotline at (416) 922-3714 ext 310 or email us at [email protected].

MooredaleNews Spring 2020

As we emerge from a cold lengthy winter, the promise of warmer temperatures and sunshine are on the horizon. It is time to put away all of your winter clothing and

break out your warm weather gear. I want to thank all of you for your continued support and interest in our wide variety of programs, sports, clubs, concerts, camps and events. A special thank you to the many volunteers who are ramping up to offer so many wonderful sports, Mayfair, and big events in the coming few months.

Welcome to Alyse Reichardt

I am pleased to announce that Alyse Reichardt is our new Camp Director & Program Manager, and she will be starting in the role effective Wednesday January 15, 2020. Alyse is a former competitive athlete who has worked for the City of Winnipeg’s Recreation Department for the last twelve years in various progressive capacities. She brings with her a wealth of experience in recreation, leisure, and sport programming, along with vast experience in delivering summer camps. Alyse is currently responsible for over seventy different programs that are running at nine different community centres. Please feel free to reach out to Alyse to welcome her to the Mooredale family, as she is eager to meet our Mooredale members.

Spring Sports and Soccer

Now is the time to register your child for Soccer, Softball, Lacrosse, or any of our wonderful sports programs. Just register online at www.mooredale.com>sports. If you find that you have some spare time, and would like to give back, please consider signing up as a coach or team assistant, as we are always looking for volunteers.

Swimming Pool Club

There were significant upgrades made to the pool and surrounding areas and these upgrades will continue in 2020. The 2019 Pool Club members were emailed their renewal forms in December 2019, and renewing members can save

money on the 2020 season fee, as long as you renew before January 31, 2020. New this year, we are offering a greater variety of memberships. You can now register for the entire season, for May and June only, or for July and August. We also have introduced a single parent family membership. Our pool is very popular every May to September. We are not accepting new members in the Pool Club as well. Please contact us if you want more information on how to join for the upcoming season.

March Break Fun

March Break at Mooredale (March 16 to 20) promises again to be a great week of activities, fun, new adventures, and a chance to make some new friends. Join our talented March Break camp staff while you discover more ways to have an outstanding March Break.

Spring Program Registration open now

Mayfair 2020

Planning and preparations are well under way for Mayfair 2020. We hope that you will join us for the annual fun and festivities, as this year is the 75th anniversary of Mayfair! As usual, there will be plenty of entertainment, rides, food, music, and fun for everyone. Mayfair will occur on Friday May 8 and Saturday May 9.

Day Camp News

As we roll into a new decade, we reflect on the traditions that make our camp experience so special, and the exciting programs we can continue to add, in order to bring our

camp families even more smiles each day. In this newsletter, we wanted to highlight just some of the opportunities for 2020 that you will NOT want to miss out on!

March Break Camp (March 16–20, 2020)Registration for our March Break Camp is now open! Throughout the week, we offer a variety of engaging and fun programming for campers ages 4–10. Sign up for one day, or sign up for the whole week! This year, we are excited to have some furry friends come visit, to explore the outdoors, to visit an amusement park, and even more.

Friend RequestsBringing a friend to camp this year? Requesting to be in the same group is easy. Simply list the name of your child’s friend on your registration form (they must be in the same age group), and we’ll take it from there!

Senior Camp SpotlightWe know that getting to choose your own adventure is important to our older campers. This year, we are excited to offer the following Program Streams for our Senior Campers, ages 9–12:

CampingEach year, our senior campers at Mooredale look forward to their two-night camping trip, and the unique fun they have with each other and their counsellors. Campfires, games of camouflage, guarded boat activities, and high ropes are just some of the highlights of the trip. Offered Weeks 2 and 8.

Day TrippingDay Tripping is the Traditional Camping Stream, but with a special flare for our Seniors! Each week, campers in this stream will go on two day trips around the city. Offered all summer (except for Weeks 2 and 8 when campers are on the Camping Trip)

SoccerCalling all soccer lovers! Campers in this program enjoy dynamic skills training, as well as fun scrimmages with their peers. The soccer program is run by our professional Mooredale Soccer coaches at Rosedale Park. Offered Session 1, 3.

TennisRun by the Rosedale Tennis Club, campers spend 3 days each week developing their tennis performance and technique, with fun games and activities mixed in! Offered Session 2, 4.

PhotographyCampers in this program get to explore different elements of photography, as they take photos around Mooredale and the community. At the end of the Session, campers get to take home their work. Offered Session 2, 3.

Winter Safety

in the Parking LotRemember to use the parking lot safely – even when there is snow and ice! Bottom line… your children’s safety depends on it.l Put your phone away before you slowly enter the

parking lot.

l Always BACK CAREFULLY INTO THE PARKING SPOT – between the lines.

l Be Polite – don’t yell at our staff who are trying to help direct traffic – your children are watching and learning from you.

l Do not leave your car running – it pollutes the air for everyone at Mooredale and for our neighbours too.

l Please escort your children and walk across the parking lot to use the sidewalk to travel to the Main House and the Coach House entrances.

l Remember to drop off or pick up and then leave the parking lot immediately, to free up the parking spot for the next parent

l The Mooredale Parking Lot is for members who are registered in a Mooredale activity or program at that time; it is not a commuter lot, a parking lot for parents driving their kids to Rosedale School, for guests who are visiting nearby or a parking lot while you are running to appointments or walking your dog.

l If you have a mechanical problem, car breakdown, come to the Main Office and we will assist you. (If it is after hours, please leave a note on your dashboard with a phone number to reach you.)

When the snow plow is forced to push the snow to the edge, we may lose access to a couple of parking spots along the edges of the lot. Please stay safe and it will help everyone arrive and leave in a friendly atmosphere.

Snow Clearing Advisory:

l Depending on how much snow falls, when the snow plow clears the lot, the snow is pushed to the edges and over the winter we may lose access to a couple of parking spots along the edges of the lot

l Please stay safe and it will help everyone arrive and depart in a friendly atmosphere.

Fall 2019 Wrap-up & 2020 Spring Registration! The 2019 Flag Football season was a great success once again with the popularity of the sport within Mooredale sky rocketing. A big congrats goes out to our division champions: U10 RedBlacks; U12 Stampeders; U14 Argonauts U16 Lions. Also, we want to thank all the great U8 players we had this season in our

‘learn to play program’. We’d like to extend a thank you to all the coaches, referees, players, and spectators for another great season. Following the continued growth and popularity of our Flag Football season, we are going to be running a Spring season once again this year! Silver medalist at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, Quebec’s Charles Richard-Hamelin stands out as an important pianist of his generation. He has appeared at prestigious festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron (France), Prague Spring, “Chopin and his Europe” (Warsaw), and the Lanaudière. As a soloist, he has performed with the main symphony orchestras of Canada as well as the Warsaw Philharmonic, Sinfonia Varsovia, Singapore and Korean Symphony Orchestras. His first solo recording of Chopin late works received critical acclaim from Diapason & BBC Music Magazine.

The Dalí String Quartet’s passionate energy is poured into everything they do, generating critical and audience acclaim for their Classical Roots, Latin Soul motive. Anchored in both Venezuela’s El Sistema and American classical conservatory traditions, this exciting young quartet combines the best of both worlds, embracing imagination and excellence as central to its art form. Dalí’s members are award-winning solo and chamber artists who have appeared at Carnegie Hall, toured widely in Europe and Asia, and recorded for Dorian, Centaur, and Naxos. As a quartet, they have been invited to perform with emphasis on the Latin-Classical connection for television, festivals and presenting organizations in North and South America. They trained at illustrious institutions: Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University Bloomington, Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, and the Simón Bolivar Conservatory Caracas. The ensemble will perform an equally eclectic programme. The first half will be Latin composers Piazzolla, Alvarez, Turina, Morales, followed by two Franz Schubert works – String Quartets No. 12 in C minor and No. 10 in E-flat Major.

Recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists, 27-year-old violinist Paul Huang is already recognized for his intensely expressive music making and effortless virtuosity. She has performed and toured with several major orchestras; Cleveland, U.S. National, Saint Louis, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Vienna Chamber, and the London Philharmonic. Helen has been a member of the Juilliard School faculty since 2008. These two virtuosos, returning by audience request, will perform another stunning program: Mendelssohn’s Violin

Pool Notes Sylvia McGeer CHAIR, SWIMMING POOL CLUBON BEHALF OF THE SWIMMING POOL CLUB EXECUTIVE

Let’s count down until Summer!

As we head into the dark days of winter, the warmth of summer and the delights of the Mooredale Pool feel like a distant memory. Thankfully, the snow and ice surely will not

last forever, and soon enough we will be readying ourselves for the first leap into the pool. For the Pool Club members, I would like to take this opportunity to announce some exciting changes and improvements to membership options. We have listened to your comments and suggestions, and we have implemented new membership options for the 2020 season. For those of you who are out of town for part of the summer, you may now renew your membership for May/June only, or July/August only, or of course, you are welcome to join us at the pool for the full summer. Additionally, it is now possible to register for a family membership with a single parent. Following on the success of the women’s changing room renovation last year, it is now the men’s turn for an upgrade! The renovations to the men’s changing room floor tiles are scheduled for March Break. So gentlemen, please come and check out your new changing room!

To our returning Pool Club members, I encourage you to renew your membership online as soon as possible, to enjoy the Early Bird discounted rates. For anyone interested in joining the Pool Club as a new member, please call 416-922-3714 x104, and speak with Catherine about registration. Many familiar and beloved faces will return to the Pool Staff next season, so please be sure to give them a friendly wave when you see them. Every summer, we are incredibly fortunate to be under their capable watch. Their professionalism and good cheer are what makes the Mooredale Pool extra-special. Opening Day for the Pool Club will be Saturday May 23, 2020 — so let’s all mark that down in our calendars as the official start of summertime. See you then!
