Wheel North January 2018

Hi everyone, We’re fully into the four-monthly editions of the magazine now. Hopefully, this edition will be delivered more expeditiously than the last. I can only apologise for the late delivery of the Autumn 2017 magazine. As a region, we are no longer in control of the printing, except to get the document to Head Office on time. Unfortunately, not all regions did that last time and there was a delay in delivering the documents to the printers so we missed our initial printing slot. We then had to wait at the printer’s pleasure until they could find a new slot to print them all. This time, if the newsletter does not reach HO on time, it will not be printed, which should mean you get your mag on time. In any case, you will have had the opportunity to see an electronic copy so you won’t miss any events. If you’re thinking of starting a new class, the region may be able to help with setup expenses. See page 17 for details. As always I am happy to receive articles and photos for the magazine. I can’t guarantee they’ll be used immediately but I’ll keep them for future issues. Hoping to hear from you,

Jacqueline Stevenson (Editor)

REGIONAL OFFICER’S REPORT

Hello everyone

I hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas and are all looking forward

to 2018 and all that it holds for you. At this time of year we look back and

reflect on the good and bad that has happened to us over the past 12

months.

The BWY nationally has had some successes – new website, national

occupational standards for yoga, stable financial position and a good congress

to name but a few.

Alongside these there have been a number of issues that need to be resolved

– poor communication from central office to members, niggles with the

website, confusion over the production of the regional newsletters and the

new staffing structure in central office.

Regionally, we look back on: a fantastic Festival; the development of

MailChimp to better communicate with our members; and the continued

success of IST days and other events that are very well attended.

The AGM, which was held on 19 November, gave members a chance to have

their say on how the region and the BWY performs and how it should move

forward. It's a shame that it wasn't better attended - 24 members came –

nevertheless we had a lively debate on a number of issues all of which I have

referred to the Chair of the Regional Officer’s Committee as we are

considering the BWY strategy going forward.

The lack of first aid courses – this is a perennial problem as the

Regional Training Officer does not have any means of identifying when

teachers’ certificates are ready for renewal, so we cannot effectively

plan such courses

The quality and variety of IST days

Wheel North – January 2018 5

Reports

Events to be better focused on non-teaching members

Refresher training on new trends in safety in asana and anatomy

Whether the BWY could build an online library of material for members

to access as part of self-study

The age profile of members and the need to attract a younger audience

The level of BWY reserves and how they could be used to further our

charitable aims.

The National Executive Committee has asked the regions to consider the

following and get feedback from their members. If you have any comments

at all I would love to hear them – good or bad, please email me.

“The key purpose of the Regions is to engage with the membership and

provide events and activities to ensure they consider their membership

delivers value for money”

How do we successfully deliver this: is there anything stopping us from

doing this better?

Is there anything we don’t currently do that we should?

What are the key things that we do well that we need to continue

doing?

Looking forward – nationally, the Yoga Fest (previously Congress) will take

place at Warwick University on the weekend of 23 March and our local

Festival, headlined by Jane Farrimond, in early July at St Hild and St Bede

College Durham. Keep checking the website for all the events both local and

national.

Yours in yoga

CLEVELAND REP REPORT

Hello yoga friends Looking back at 2017 I’d like to applaud the continued support of yoga lovers who come along to our Saturday sessions and the teachers who present their excellent lessons. Since moving to The Wilson Centre back in July 2015 we had had ‘money in the pot’ and the price of sessions remained the same even though the hire of the hall was more than treble what the community centre used to charge us. The Wilson Centre have once again increased their hire prices and so reluctantly our sessions in the new year will now be £6 for BWY members and £7.50 for non-members. Tea and coffee will still be included. Our free day for members was Saturday 2

nd December with Lynn and Roy Moor.

Lynn demonstrated the wonderful Dru Dance with a detailed explanation. After the warm up with Roy, Lynn broke the movements down until the full Dance was completed. The feedback was so good I have booked Lynn and Roy to repeat the session for December 2018. We had a wonderful shared lunch break and everyone had a great time meeting new friends and catching up with established ones. (Picture in Local Events, Ed.) Looking ahead to 2018 all the Saturday dates and teachers are now booked for The Wilson Centre (apart from an administration error for September as I completely missed it off the list). You can see the list in ‘Local Groups

1. Cleveland

IST day is booked with Sarah Lionheart with her Meditation, Mindfulness and Loving Kindness Part 1 (more information on page 23). Please make sure you understand that Cleveland (Sunday 13

th May) Part 1 and Durham (Saturday 13

th

October) Part 2 IST days are relevant to each other and should be booked together. Priority will be given to those booking both IST days. There will also be a self-compassion workshop on the day before the IST day. May the new year bring you health, wealth and happiness.

Make every day special, Carol

South Cumbria –

Hello All We have had a wet, grey winter, interspersed with some cold, sunny and snowy days. Now that we move into Spring and the days lengthen, may you all enjoy the feeling of new life as plants and flowers emerge. DURHAM REP REPORT

Hello my Yogic friends

One more magazine and as ever I’m writing my report at the last minute – there again there have to be some advantages to being the editor! It’s been a lovely bright day here today, just the kind of day to watch some birds and potter around in the garden before settling down for a cosy evening. A day of rest before the new term starts. Here we are again with a new year and no doubt many a New Year resolution has already bitten the dust. I’ve been looking at ways to establish true habits, things that you miss when you don’t do them. Depending on the change, they can take anything from 21 to 254 days to establish, but nil desperandum, one day at a time. We can use Yoga to help with this, Yoga Nidra especially, when we can set a positive intention (Sankalpa) to support our efforts. I’m looking forward to Yoga Nidra every day! Our IST day and workshop last October were both well attended and generally well received. The IST day was looking at why we do what we do in the way we do, and was largely done by way of discussion. A lot of feedback was ‘more movement would have been useful’ and I have passed this on to the Education Officer. The Workshop was more active, practicing different ways to think when doing Yoga to see the effects – e.g. just thinking about having a ‘central line’ from base to apex and through the spine created more space and length in the spine without effort it seemed. Next year we are having as our IST day the second part of Sarah Lionheart’s Mindfulness course. The first day will be in Cleveland in May. At the moment we are prioritising bookings for both days. There will also be a workshop next year on the theme of self-compassion and mindfulness. For details, see pages 25 and 26. I hope all those who came to the Durham Yoga Group free day and lunch in December enjoyed the day as much as I did. Thanks must go especially to Noel who stepped in at the last minute to take the session for us. We’re all ready for this year, as are the other two groups in the Country – Teesdale and Darlington.

I hope to see you soon at one of the many events available to you

Om Shanti, Jacqueline

Reports NORTHUMBERLAND REP REPORT

Hello again everyone,

Happy 2018 to everyone from Northumberland. “Is this now the right time to use our positive power? Make a Sankalpa: a positive intention.” (Yoga Journal.) Our Saturday morning sessions seem to be going really well with good steady attendance figures. We are attracting quite a few non-members to the sessions. August workshop: Margaret Davidson gave an amazing session on: ‘Using the Breath, Ground, the Body and the Attention’, looking at the diaphragm as a postural muscle, combined with the Psoas engaging as the primary leg muscle in order to allow a flow of movement into posture. September workshop: Vicky Batsioudi gave a fabulous session on: ‘New beginnings’. In this session we used the meditation, breathing practices, movement and relaxation as tools to help us identify where we are now and where we envision ourselves being in the future. Great preparation for 2018! October workshop: Linda Irving gave a wonderful session on: ‘Our Inner Light’ inspired by Diwali. This started with loosening postures to get in touch with our physical body and moved towards deeper stretches, followed by a candle meditation and relaxation. November workshop: Roy Moor gave us an engaging and invigorating Kosha Yoga

Practice. Pam has been very busy making sure we have an exciting calendar of interesting tutors for the coming year. Our first workshop of the New Year is (was Ed.!) with Steve Sanders

which we are really looking forward to. Our IST day is Sunday July 15

th with Wendy Teasdil. Further details will be loaded to the

BWY website and our yoga Northumberland facebook page. Wishing you peace, love and light.

Best Oms,

Dawn & Pam

TYNE AND WEAR REP REPORT

Hi Yogis,

As I’m writing it’s more than a little chilly outside. Christmas is coming and I’m looking both forward and back. The Tyne and Wear Yoga Group have two enthusiastic new helpers, both newly qualified teachers - Alex Kean and Sandra Corlett. We’re fully booked for the whole year – see later in the magazine for details. Since my last report, we have had some great sessions from Carol Watson, Alan Ross and Beverley Prevatt-Goldstein who did a session based on mudras. We had our free session on 9 December followed by a shared lunch/Christmas Party. Chris Evans led us in a Yoga 12 days of Christmas and Alex did a lovely meditation and relaxation. We asked for donations for St Oswald’s Hospice in honour of Emma Evans who was looked after by them. We raised £110. Festival arrangements are moving along nicely, with Jane Farrimond and most of the local teachers booked – see later in the magazine for more details The IST day with Marye Wyvill entitled ‘Bones for Life’ was booked up very quickly and we now have a waiting list. Many people booked in and paid on-line making things very much easier all round. You can book the Festival in the same way. Don’t worry however, if you’re a bit of a technophobe, there’ll also be the more traditional ways of booking available. I’ve had a few people asking me if there are any First Aid training sessions running. I am building up a list so if your First Aid certificate is due to be renewed let me know and once we have about 10 or 12 people I’ll get something organised. Here’s to a great 2018 Om Shanti,

Sue

I t is with deep sadness that I write this, informing all who knew

M argaret T aylor of her passing after a brave battle with lung

cancer. We met in 1995 when we became students at the late

Donald Butler's class, she being the oldest student at 62.

After we gained our diplomas we stayed fr iends along with

Christine Elliott (now Cowling). We met often to share our yoga

practice & experiences along with a homemade shared lunch. T hose were happy days.

She then specialised in pregnancy yoga (or as she called it "Yoga for preggy mums").

T hen in the last few years there was more lunching than yoga where we all had a ball. She

did enjoy trying out different restaurants.

M argaret was a true lady, very dignified right until the end & I never ever saw her

anything other than patient, positive & cheerful.

ST. OSWALD’S HOSPICE

One Friday in late October a group of ladies gathered to celebrate a life. Emma

Evans was well known in Northumberland. Some of us knew her mainly through

her role as yoga teacher and County Rep. She also worked for the County Council

and was instrumental in the creation of beautiful parks for residents to enjoy.

We mourned her passing but she would not have wanted sadness and the idea of

celebrating her life with a morning of fun seemed more appropriate.

Betty Websell, retired yoga teacher of long standing (you may well remember her

from the occasions when she would lead circle dances at the Festival weekends),

felt that a good way to celebrate Emma’s memory would be to have a morning of

circle dancing. The session was open to anyone who wished to come along and

included seasoned dancers from the group Betty attends as well as a good

number of stumblers and beginners from the yoga groups in the area.

Betty cleverly mingled the circle dancers among the rest of us so that not too

many mistakes were made. With a lot of laughter, we set about enjoying the

morning. If you have ever taken part in a circle dance you will realise that they

are a very meditative experience. You need to keep your focus because it is easy

to forget the next step just when you think you have got the sequence into your

head. At the same time, it is good to laugh at your mistakes.

The morning went with a swing Betty and her henchman Pat (Potts) kept the

momentum up. Others of Betty’s friends provided a lavish tea/coffee break with

beautiful cakes and scones which left us groaning through the second half.

It was a lovely way to celebrate Emma and the generosity of the dancers and

other friends who were not able to come on the day raised £370 for St Oswalds

Hospice, her chosen charity. Pat Rathbone

Money was also raised for St. Oswald’s at the AGM, where we had a raffle and at

the Durham Yoga Group December session, where people paid to wear their

Christmas Jumpers (or not to wear one in fact!). Between the two days, we raised

£160. Thanks to all who contributed in any way. Jacqueline Stevenson

“KEEPING IN TOUCH " Contr ibu tor : Jean Sul l i van

We now have a Northern region email newsletter (MailChimp) set up to send out regular information on events etc. around the region. Members should already have received a couple of mailings in the latter months of 2017. If you haven’t received anything at all into your Inbox it might have been directed to your junk mail automatically. It is a good idea to add the email address, [email protected], to your address book; that way future mailings should come straight into your Inbox. There is no-reply to these mailings but you can ‘Click to Book’ on events, where appropriate, directly from the content. Also, they may have links in them to take you to documents of interest, e.g. the Festival Newsletter. Anyone without an email address, or with an out of date or incorrect email address on their BWY member details will not receive the mailings - please login to the new national website - www.bwy.org.uk - to check and if necessary change this information on your Member page. If you are making any changes it would be useful if you could also drop me an email and I will ensure the change is applied to the newsletter database - please send to [email protected]. If any non-BWY members would like to be added to the Mailing List please contact your County Rep with your details - or email me as above. Many thanks and Happy 2018!!

DURHAM YOGA GROUP - "KUNDALINI YOGA"

“A SHARED MORNING WITH MICK BRENNAN " Contr ibu tor : Wil l i e Gi l es

Some serpents awaken a primeval fear in mankind: they are a dangerous unseen foe that can kill and in the Christian tradition are also deceivers and only fit to ‘eat of the dust of the earth’. In Mayan tradition however, the feathered serpent is seen as a dualistic god, part bird and part snake, and the creator of the Universe. The snake has another dualism, seen as either good or evil, and in the Hindu tradition is associated with desire. In Kundalini Yoga, the coiled serpent represents the spiritual energy located at the base of the spine, that, when aroused, escapes from the seventh chakra or crown, perhaps as the crowned aura representing sainthood. And so we tried to rouse the sleeping serpent with the combined use of the breath of fire (kapalabhati) and exercises designed to release the hips and the spine from the unwanted lassitude of a body area that deserves and needs constant attention. The practice was combined with meditation and as the energy climbed up the spine we recited the mantra:

Ad guray nameh, Juguad guray nameh

Sut gyray nameh, siree guroo clayv-ah nameh

To have achieved Kundalini would have been unlikely, but what a fantastic introduction to this form of Yoga that tries to experience, rather than worship, God, in recognition of wisdom that is primal, everlasting and true.

DIPLOMA DAYS

Every other month I find myself in the company of fabulous people in the beautiful surroundings of Ovingham. These are my Diploma Days. Diploma days filled with hard work, support and dedication from all involved. Diploma days filled with laughter and joy. Diploma days that have led to lasting and precious friendships. Lesson planning and teaching practice; Assignments and Quizzes; Living and breathing Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Patanjali! Getting our heads around Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology, A continuous challenge but ultimately enjoyable with every ‘light bulb’ moment! Shared experiences, shared knowledge, shared everlasting love of all things yoga and not to mention sumptuous shared lunches. We all have our tasks to ensure the smooth running of each weekend. We all have our favorite yoga mat spot in the lovely Ovingham Reading Rooms. We all are very fortunate to have the skills and experience of our Diploma Tutor, Alison Hogy to support us through each fun filled but industrious weekend, alongside the unrivaled yoga style of Wendy Teasdill as a guest tutor. Positive, freethinking and continued support for each other is embraced by Nikki Bruce, Dawn Goodwill-Evans, Jodie Freestone, Rachel Noble, Sarah Givens, Susan Davies and Zoe Wigham (and Pam Snowball! Ed). These are my cherished Diploma Yogis who with me, are at the moment, (December 2017) submerged in Patanjali, but I can safely assume that we all have our heads and our smiles very much bobbing above the surface! Booking

BOOKING PROCEDURES AND INFORMATION

How to find a BWY event

Go to the website www.bwy.org.uk and logon. This will take you to your home page,

where you can see events on which you are already booked listed on the right-hand

side of the page. You will also see a calendar, ‘Your BWY Diary’ containing all events

around the country as registered on the website.

NB. If you are a teacher, there is also a box labelled ‘Events’ at the top of the page.

This is a count of the events you are registered to teach, so for most of us this is zero.

There are several ways to view events:

1. If you know the date and title of the event in which you are interested, go to

that date in the calendar and click directly onto the event.

2. Click on the Events and Training tab on your Home page where you will see

‘What’s on for your region’.

3. Scroll down the page and click on ‘What’s on in your region’ to see all the

events listed for your home region and select from the list.

4. Search by your postcode – this brings up events in a random date order and

is not recommended.

5. Scroll right to the bottom of the page, select ‘Regions’ and then the region in

which you are interested which will show you all events in that region.

If there is a place available on the event you want to attend, carry on to booking. If

not, contact the organiser to be put onto the waiting list.

Booking and Payment

In order to book a place on an event online, it is necessary to pay at the time of

booking using the PayZone system. Once you have booked you will receive an email

confirming your place and another confirming your payment.

If you are unable to pay online, you will not be able to book directly. Contact the

organiser to request a place and to arrange payment by bank transfer or cheque.

NB. This option should only be used in exceptional circumstances as it makes

administration of the event much more complex.

Refund policy

If you cancel a confirmed place on any event 2 weeks or less before the event, no

refund will be possible unless there is someone else to take your place. Before that

time, a refund or transfer to another event may be possible depending on the

circumstances.
