Remember when..... The biggest news from 1963 was the assassination of the US President Kennedy on November 22nd which thrust Lyndon Johnson into the role of president and the murder two days later of Lee Harvey Oswald by nightclub owner Jack Ruby. This was a difficult time to become president with the mounting troubles in Vietnam where the Viet Cong Guerrillas had now killed 80 American Advisers and the continued campaign for civil rights by the black community caused violent reactions from whites including Mississippi, Virginia and Alabama where the black civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr was arrested. Films included “The Birds” and “The Great Escape” and popular TV programmes “The Virginian” and “Lassie”. ladies fashion clothes and hairstyles included fur boots and towering hair do’s for evening wear. In music the beginning of Beatlemania after they release “I Want To Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There” and “Meet the Beatles”.

Once again, the Ontario Chapter received the Top-Flight Chapter award for 2017. I would like to extend a “Thank You” to all members that participated in the program in 2017. This isn’t a one-person task and requires the support of the membership

This award marks 10 consecutive years that the chapter has received this award. I hope the tradition will continue under the new Top Flight coordinator Rob Dardengo. If you are working on a project and willing to share your experiences, write a tech articles and send them in. Here are activities that are required to maintain Chapter Top Flight status:

Required Activities

1. Host one Chapter Judging Meet –

2. Conduct one technical seminar.

3. Conduct one judging school.

4. Conduct one membership meeting

5. Conduct one stand-alone chapter charitable event

6. Conduct one-chapter road tour.

7. Conduct one-chapter social event

8. Chapter website maintained and linked to www.ncrs.org (need chapter web address by January 1)

Items 1 through 7 must have supplementary documentation such as sign-in sheets documenting attendance.

Each required activity is to be a separate entity.

Variable Activities

1. Number of members to have their car(s) judged at a hosted Chapter/Regional judging meet.

2. Number of technical articles published in the chapter newsletter (send newsletter). Based on Chapter size. Ontario is considered a medium size so 6 are required p/y

3. Number of members that judged or tabulated at a hosted Chapter/Regional judging meet or staffed a hosted National Convention.

4. Number of members that drove their Corvette to a chapter meeting or event.

5. Number of members that drove their Corvette on a chapter road tour.

6. Number of members that attended at least one-chapter event.

7. Set up an NCRS display at a non-NCRS Car event to promote NCR 8. Amount your Chapter donated to a 501-3C charity. (see new guidelines)

I sincerely hope that the membership will assist the chapter and Rob in securing these goals. This report is due on a quarterly basis to the Chapter Top Flight coordinator, so please help out.

All chapter members can be proud of these accomplishments since only about half of the chapters worldwide achieve this award.

I'd like to take a few minutes to thank everyone who visited our Annual Swap Meet. I

realize the effort it takes to sort through your spare parts, pack them up and display

them for sale. This year we had 14 vendors selling and trading their spare parts. We

are all busy and I know that there are many things competing for our time on a Sunday

morning. It is with your participation and attendance, we were able to raise close to

$1000 which will be donated to The Hospital for Sick Children. We could not have done

this without the support of our event partner, and chapter sponsor Wilson Niblett. We

look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events this year. The Spring Tech Session

will be on Sunday April 8, 2018 in Brantford ON. Mark May 11/12, 2018 on your

calendar for this year's Judging Meet. Registration is now open for Spring Tech

Session and the Judging Meet. Don't delay...register early as limited spaces will be

So What is an L88 Corvette?

The L-88 option package for the Corvette was the result of years of developmental work which resulted in a factory racing option package that could be ordered from Chevrolet in a brand new Corvette. The L-88 option was only available for three brief model years from 1967 through 1969. The L-88 Corvette was so potent, that it could not only allow the new owner or driver to win a race in local competition, but it also could propel a properly prepared Corvette to stunning finishing positions in world class International races, such as the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Daytona. These racing victories with the L-88 option package, made the Corvette an overnight hit. The L-88 nomenclature became synonymous with Corvettes and with champions. Although

only 216 L-88 Corvettes rolled off the St. Louis

Corvette Plant assembly line during these three model years, the L-88 created an image of power and prestige that would live on with the Corvette for decades. Most of the race prepared L-88 Corvettes that competed on tracks in the United States and Europe are featured in my text book, and so are the predecessors that led up to the creation of the L-88 factory racing option. These are the Corvettes that started the legend. These are the Corvettes that shaped a generation of Corvettes and Corvette enthusiasts, and they

are the Corvettes that shaped the future generations of Corvettes.

So what exactly is an L88 Corvette? It’s a special order ultra high performance Corvette that was equipped with the 427 cubic inch L88 full competition engine and its trademark L88 hood, a heavy duty M22 four speed transmission, J56 heavy duty disc brake calipers, J50 power brakes, F41 heavy duty suspension, K66 transistor ignition, and C48 heater delete (1967). These were all mandatory options that the buyer had to select in order to receive the L88 engine. It was an option package.

Additional options were available such as power windows, leather seats, bolt on hardtop, tinted glass, speed minder, side pipes, engine block heater, rear window defogger, head rests, tilt-telescopic steering column, and for late 1969, a heavy duty dual disc clutch, and a heavy duty turbohydramatic 400 automatic transmission. Comfort options such as a radio, air conditioning, and power steering were not available with the L88 engine option package.

Zora Arkus-Duntov was incharge of the L-88 Corvette. It was intended for

racing purposes, but only a few of the 216 L-88s produced actually raced on road racing courses or drag strips. These cars required super high octane gasoline rated at 103 octane to feed the

12.5:1 compression ratio pistons inside the special high performance 427 engine block.

Only select gas stations had this type of fuel for their customers. Certain regions of some states never had gasoline with such a high octane. The L88 Corvette could only be fueled in certain

parts of the country.

Think about this for a moment, for this can never happen in today’s society:

The ability of a customer to walk into a Chevrolet dealership, select the correct options to purchase a full race L-88 Corvette, that can win victories not only in local competition, but can also win in International races against factory teams. That is exactly what Duntov intended for the Corvette. That is what the L88 was all about, and that is why the Corvette is the world class high performance sports car that it is today.
