Cashell Elementary School/Varied Locations– Speech/Language Pathologist (17101 Cashell Rd, Rockville, MD 20853): My organization is under the umbrella of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), in the special education department. I am a speech-language pathologist; however, I no longer have a traditional position being school-based. I am on the assistive technology team for my district, which works with students who are nonverbal or highly unintelligible (difficult to understand). These students use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) which can consist of communication boards/books, picture symbols, and devices or tablets. Our team is collaborative, consisting of speech-language pathologists, special education teachers, occupational therapists, and a physical therapist. We are each assigned a particular group of schools across Montgomery County. I currently have 13 school teams that I work with, consulting and supporting them in creating effective communication and opportunities, training on equipment or systems, and identifying available supports in schools. In addition, I assess students to see if they require the support from our team. On a typical day, I would visit one or two schools to "check in" on my students. I let the teacher/speech-language pathologist in the school know that I am coming ahead of time. I go into the classroom and observe the student while also seeing how the communication strategies and AAC are being implemented. I typically will work with a child using their device or supports during whatever activity the class is engaged in. This is usually a morning circle, academic time, or speech group; however, I have "plugged in" to almost every class you could think of! I also chat with the teacher and/or therapists to see how things are going and about any next steps. The best part of my job is that I see students as young as 3 years old all the way up to age 22 in a variety of special education settings, so I can allow a student to see any population they are interested in, possibly more than one in a day. The location I wrote down as an address is an elementary school in Rockville because that is the school I was based in for 5 years so I am most familiar with it, but all of my other schools are in Silver Spring so that is a possibility as well (a couple are metro accessible). I am also open to a student returning more than once, as many have done that in the past (especially HESP students who need observation hours).

US Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Economist) Industry: Government 1301 Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC 20460 EPA uses economic analysis to meet statutory obligations and Congressional mandates. National decision-makers increasingly request economic information prior to making important regulatory decisions. EPA strives to improve the environment without imposing unreasonable costs on society by grounding its policy proposals in sound economic

48

analysis. Cost-effectiveness and market-based incentives are critical when developing regulations and policies. Underlying these efforts is the recognition that a thorough and careful economic analysis is an important component in informing sound environmental policies. Preparing high-quality economic analysis can greatly enhance the effectiveness of environmental policy decisions by providing policy makers with the ability to systematically assess the consequences of various actions. An economic analysis can describe the implications of policy alternatives not just in terms of economic efficiency, but also in terms of the magnitude and distribution of an array of impacts. Economic analysis also serves as a mechanism for organizing information carefully. Thus, even when data are insufficient to support particular types of economic analysis, the conceptual scoping exercise can provide useful insights. The National Center for Environmental Economics was established to help support the use of economics in decision making at the EPA, and to provide expertise on the variety of economic issues that arise in the course of proposing new regulations, as well as evaluating existing programs and policies. The office performs a wide array of regulatory analysis and research on methods used to value the economic costs, benefits and impacts of regulations. In addition to having career staff, the Center also supports some temporary fellowship and internship positions, which are filled by persons having a range of academic training - from current undergraduate students to post-doctoral candidates. We would hope to provide the student shadowing us for the day would to see more about the type of work we perform, to invite them to ask more about the application of economic principles and tools to environmental problems, and to have a chance to explore issues that might end up being useful to their academic (topics for papers) or career plans.

I supervise our data analytics group, which provides support to multiple audits of federal agencies. Our staff take large amounts of data on federal programs and analyze it to draw conclusions. Typically I would have the student meet with me and one or two other staff here for informational interviews about working here and the skills and background needed to be successful.
