How it works

Inside this brochure, you can see the full list, descriptions and dates for all of the events in our cultural programmes.

Each event has a credit value; you will have 100 credits total this semester to spend on events. After Orientation, we will send an email with an online form where you can apply to events you want to attend. After the sign-up period is over, we will allocate spaces randomly to students. You will then receive an email with the details of the events you have been allocated.

You will be automatically placed on a waitlist for any event you are not allocated, so you do not need to contact us again.

We will reallocate spaces on the events if and when they become available and let you know by email if you have been successful.

FISH AND CHIPS

Join us for bouldering at one of London’s largest indoor climbing centres, The Arch North. No experience necessary, as we’ll have an hour introductory lesson where the instructors will teach you the basics, before some free time to explore some of the walls- try the upside-down overhangs if you’re brave enough!

CLIMB THE O2

15th

Seen by more than 70 million people in 44 countries and in 22 languages around the globe, it is still breaking box-office records everywhere. The original London production celebrated its 30th anniversary back in October. The show starts at 19:30.

No trip to Britain is complete without a traditional fish and chip supper. Traditionally featuring cod, haddock or plaice, deep-fried in a crispy batter coating. Best served sprinkled with salt and vinegar, and a healthy dollop of mushy peas. We try this British speciality at Poppies, one of London’s top fish and chip restaurants.

Up at The O2 is an exhilarating experience that takes you on an expedition over the roof of The O2 via a fabric walkway. Suspended 2m above the surface of The O2 roof, the walkway is 52m above ground level and 380m long. Take a trip in the dark and see the capital’s magnificent cityscape lit up by thousands of bright lights. Feel the chill of the night air and watch the stars come out from one of the most iconic

rooftops in the city.

Travel back in time to the 1880’s, back into the dark world of fog, gas lamps, alehouses, prostitution.. and murder! Between August and November, 1888, the Whitechapel area of London was witness to a series of horrific killings, that remain unresolved to this day. On this tour, an autumn of gaslight and fog, of menacing shadows and stealthy footsteps is evoked.

Well known as it is, Oxford never fails to impress even its most regular visitors with something new. Think of Oxford and inevitably you think of its university, revered as one of the world’s great academic institutions, with its honey-coloured stone buildings set around ivy-clad quadrangles, but the City of Dreaming Spires is also a bustling cosmopolitan town. Oxford remains dominated by institutions related to its academic community, such as the Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre, but the city is also home to a lively multicultural community. It also has ample shopping opportunities, charming cafes and restaurants.

The trip includes transportation from London, a guided tour of Oxford and entrance to one of the University’s colleges.

DAY TRIP TO BATH

DAY TRIP TO STONEHENGE AND SALISBURY

Thirty-five years after the groundbreaking original Broadway production, this UK and West End premiere of the sensational and iconic Tony Award-winning musical Dreamgirls is now playing at the Savoy Theatre. Dreamgirls transports you to a revolutionary time in American music history and charts the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’. They learn the hard lesson that show business

is as tough as it is fabulous.Admission to London’s highest viewing platform and the only place to take in over 1,000 years of the capital’s history at once. Situated at the top of Western Europe’s tallest building, The View from The Shard is a premium visitor attraction with spectacular panoramic views of the city stretching for up

to 40 miles.Bath is one of England’s most beautiful cities. Easy to navigate, Bath boasts a diverse range of restaurants, independent shops, theatres and pubs. It is a great place to explore British culture, as it was a city built by the Romans on Celtic foundations, and each subsequent period of British history has touched the city in some way. No trip to Bath would be complete without visiting the Roman Baths, dating back 2000 years the baths are steeped in history. The rich history of Bath continues with Bath Abbey, one of the largest examples of gothic architecture in England, 80% of its walls are covered in stained glass windows.

The trip includes all transportation to Bath, a walking tour of the city and entry into the Roman Baths.

A swashbuckling farce of brilliant humour and razor-sharp wit, Gilbertand Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance makes for the perfect night out. Chock-full of memorable melodies, it includes the famous tongue-twisting patter song from the Major-General and the cowardly Police Sergeant’s ‘When a felon’s not engaged in his

employment’.

We can chart the history of modern day Salisbury back nearly 800 years, when they first laid the foundation stone of what was to become Salisbury Cathedral. Outside of the magnificence of the Cathedral itself most visitors come to see one of the few surviving copies of the Magna Carta. Salisbury, today, is a bustling market town that features many attractive pubs and res-taurants, perfect for lunch. On our way to Salisbury, we visit the great and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge. What visitors see today is the substan-tial remnants of the last in a sequence of such monuments erected between circa 3000 BC and 1600 BC.

The trip includes all transportation and entry into Stonehenge & Salisbury Cathedral

15th SCHOOL OF ROCK

Celebrate 70 years of The Royal Ballet’s landmark production of Petipa’s classic ballet and enter an enchanted world of princesses, fairy godmothers and magical spells, to glorious music by Tchaikovsky.

Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns his class of students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping rock band. Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, this high-octane smash delivers face-melting guitar riffs and touch-ing romance in equal doses!

One cannot get a full appreciation of England without having the chance to walk its country lanes and wooded byways, whilst stopping off for refreshment at an olde worlde country pub in a picturesque village. We will escort you on a walk of the North Downs region, an area of outstanding natural beauty, that lies to the south west of London in the county of Surrey. The walk is 5 miles long over open fields, through shaded forests to hill-top vistas, where there are superb and extensive views over southern England.

HIKING TRIP: ENGLISH

COUNTRY WALK

One of the largest castles in the country, vitally located at the shortest crossing point to continental Europe, Dover Castle has played a prominent part in the nation’s history.

We will visit the iron age fortification, and afterwards, the magnificent White Cliffs of Dover, which formed part of the colossal chalk land bridge between Britain and continental Europe until the rising sea separated the two at the end of the Ice Age.

The trip includes all transportation from London and entrance into Dover Castle.

CURRY NIGHT @

DISHOOM

Get up close and personal with the making of the Harry Potter novels that defined an entire generation.

All of the Harry Potter movies were produced at Levesden studios and we will see the actual sets that were used in these films. We will have the chance to step into the Great Hall of Hogwarts School, Dumbledore’s office and Gryffindor’s Common Room.

We will also learn how the magic was brought to life, with SFX displays and video pieces featuring interviews with the cast and crew created.

English cuisine has sometimes been cruelly berated over the decades, but things began to change for the better following the immigration into this country of people from other parts of the British Commonwealth, most especially from the Indian subcontinent. Indian cuisine has now become a firmly established favourite with the British, and it seems a little ironic that some of the world’s best Indian cuisine can be found in London.

So if you fancy trying something a little different and enjoying one of the best Indian restaurants in London, come along!

@ WEMBLEY STADIUM

Rugby, like soccer in Europe, is a British institution and an afternoon at a rugby match is a ‘must do’ when given the opportunity. Watching the strength, skill and sheer power of the U.K.’s most talented rugby players is nothing but thrilling, especially at an Aviva Premiership fixture such as this, between two of England’s top teams. Saracens will continue their relationship with Wembley Stadium when they face Harlequins at the national stadium on 8th April 2017.

Brighton has become a favoured destination for British tourists since the middle of the 18th century. It is a town that retains its Georgian charm that so captivated the future George IV and inspired him to build one of the country’s most intriguing buildings, the Royal Pavilion. Brighton today is a free-spirited place and home to Europe’s biggest annual Pride festival, and is frequently voted one of the Top 10 city beach break destinations in the world.

DAY TRIP TO STONEHENGE & SALISBURY OPTION 2

THE MUSIC OF BOND 11thThe Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to London’s Royal Albert Hall to perform The Music of Bond, following its sensational sell-out performance in October 2015. Presented by A View to a Kill’s ‘Bond girl’ Fiona Fullerton, we celebrate over fifty years of timeless James Bond theme songs with hits from Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, Diamonds Are Forever, Skyfall, Spectre and many more, all sung by outstanding vocalists Alison Jiear and Simon Bowman.

So popular in the UK that it earned its people the nickname ‘ros-bifs’ from the French, the roast dinner is a staple of the British diet, historically enjoyed every Sunday following a Church service and still a regular part of many people’s weekly routines.

We’ll sample the traditional meal of roast beef, vegetables, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding (and plenty of gravy) at one of London’s many great pubs.

13thENGLISH ROAST SUPPER

26thThe Royal Shakespeare Company’s world premiere production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical has captured the imagination of young and old alike and continues to play to packed houses at London’s Cambridge Theatre. Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, with original songs from comedian Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly, Matilda revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dares to change her destiny.

In Verona, violence rules. Two families bear an ancient grudge, and rage flares between them. In a world where greed, wealth and bitter feuds prevail, two disenchanted children dare to choose love.

The play will be performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre where the original productions were housed.

TRIP TO CALAIS, FRANCE

31st March - 1ST APRIL

This trip is run with staff and students from NYU Paris. Together, we will be volunteering in the distribution centre for Help Refugees UK, one of the charities distributing aid to displaced people all over Europe.

Although the main camp in Calais has been demolished, there are still around 1000 people in nearby Dunquerque, and the charity also reallocates aid to Greece and Syria based on current needs. We’ll be volunteering for two days at the centre,

staying nearby in the town of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The trip includes transportation and accommodation. Place are very limited.

Join us on a trip to the seaside town of Brighton (see page 10), where we’ll be cleaning the beach with the Marine Conservation Society, a charity dedicated to cleaning the UK’s coastline. We’ll help out for a couple of hours, have a talk on some interesting issues and then get some famous fish and chips before heading back to London.

The trip includes transportation and a meal in Brighton.

VOLUNTEERING TRIPS

We also run several trips as part of our volunteering programme, giving you the chance to volunteer with other NYU London students and see some more of the country at the same time.

You can sign up for the beach clean at the same time as the other events in this guide. The weekend trips are run differently - we’ll email around six weeks before each to give you more information on how the sign up process works. See the volunteering handout for more details.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY

If I’m on the waitlist for an event, will I get to go?Once an event is full, we will add the names of all additional interested students to a priority waitlist. If a student seeks to release their name from an event, we contact students on the waitlist to fill the released place. We usually communicate this information via a student’s NYU email account.

What if I sign-up for a trip and then cannot go?Let us know as soon as possible if you cannot make it, so that we can offer it out to somebody who is able to make it. We are unable to refund credits if a student is late for an event or misses the events for any other reason. If we notice that you are repeatedly failing to collect tickets, or attend your events, without letting us know beforehand, we reserve the right to remove you from future programming events without warning.

Email [email protected] if you need to cancel an event.

When are tickets reallocated? If someone drops out of an event, their place will be reallocated to someone on the waitlist. As soon as students let the Student Life team know that they can no longer attend an event, we will attempt to reallocate the ticket to a student on the waitlist, This could be a week before an event, or more commonly, in the days preceding. Therefore, it is important that you continue to check your emails, because this is how we notify students. If you would like to place yourself on a waitlist after sign-up, please email Julia at [email protected] or come into the Student Hub (G08, 10am - 6pm, Monday to Friday).

Uncollected tickets At 17:05 on the day of an event, we will release any uncollected tickets to the wider student body. Students can then use their credits to obtain an available ticket. By this point, you would have had ample time to collect your ticket or arrange for someone else to collect your ticket, and would have received multiple reminders.
