Friends of Portland Adult Education’s (FPAE) mission is to �nd innovative ways to help adult learners reach their educational and employment goals. Welcome to Portland Adult Education

I am thrilled to be writing to you as Port-land Adult Education’s new Executive Director. I have been serving as PAE’s In-terim Director since November and I am so impressed with everything I have seen. �e commitment and dedication of teachers, students, o�ce sta� and volunteers is un-like any organization I have worked with. I am honored to be able to play a small part in keeping this ship sailing smoothly.

Over the next several months I will be reaching out to our students, sta�, vol-unteers and community members to see how we can continue the good work that is going on here at PAE. Please don’t hesitate to call or write if you have any suggestions.

I encourage you to check out our classes. Try something new this Spring – learn a new language, learn to play an instrument, improve your computer skills, take an exercise class. �ere are a few exciting new classes being o�ered this summer – Sea Kayaking the Maine Coast, Introduction to Paddleboarding and Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga.

Each student will learn the simple 4 step system of chalk painting kitchen cabinets or furniture in this single eve-ning course. ARGENTINE TANGO FOR BEGINNERSArgentine Tango is an improvised dance, a conversation without words with someone you may not know. �is class covers basic concepts to get beginners dancing: connection, musicality, turns, pivots, the cruzada, leading and following, footwork, codes. It also introduces three styles of Tango: tango, vals, and milonga. Please bring shoes with soles that slide. HATHA YOGA As a system of physical and mental self-awareness, hatha yoga helps students to reduce stress and increase �exibility in a noncompetitive way. Students will learn basic yoga stretches that help to correct body alignment, improve posture, increase awareness of breathing patterns, and help to integrate the mind with the body. EVIDENCE-BASED TAI CHI AND QIGONG: INTRODUCTION �is program is the product of Dr. Yang Yang’s extensive training of the Chen style and his research studying the mecha-nisms and bene�ts of Tai Chi and Qigong practice. �e program focus is “the most important aspects of traditional training that will yield the greatest measured ben-e�t in the shortest amount of time” and consists of essential static and dynamic qigong exercises and seven forms that are challenging yet adaptable to suit all levels. SEA KAYAKING THE MAINE COAST: INTRODUCTION �is course is for anyone who wants to try out sea kayaking and gain the skills and knowledge needed to paddle the Maine coast. Participants will learn the essen-tial techniques of the sport and become familiar with the necessary gear and safety considerations. After getting comfortable in the boat along the shores of Portland harbor during the �rst day, you’ll begin the second day with a paddle to an island, working on improving boat control along the way. STAND-UP PADDLE BOARD (SUP) YOGA SUP yoga provides a way to combine the sport of stand-up paddleboarding with the practice of yoga. Doing yoga on a board can be challenging, but it’s not as di�cult as you might expect and it’s super fun and exciting. �is course, which is open to people of all skill levels, starts with at least a half hour of yoga practice and ends with a brief paddle back to the beach just before sunset. OCCUPATIONAL TRAINING

CNA (CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT)�is State of Maine approved CNA course includes classroom, lab and clinical experiences. Tuition includes texts, materials, and fees. Admission process includes the completion of an application packet, completion of CASAS test (a reading assessment) with appropriate score, and an interview. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalency and a social security number. CNA, MAINE MEDICAL CENTERMaine Medical Center in Portland o�ers a Certi�ed Nursing Assistant class three times a year - in January, March and September. �ose interested in this free program are invited to attend an informa-tion session before the application process of each class. On the night of the information session, applicants will be given a reading compre-hension test (TABE test). SKILLED PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM�is program works with foreign-trained professionals whohave a bachelor’s degree or above from their home country.

SERVICES INCLUDE:• English courses related to speci�c professions• Employer and professional networking/support groups• Job search skills• Career guidance and case management• Online computer tutorials• Assistance with the credential review process and Maine licensing

requirements• Coordination with other service providers • Classes and workshops including: job skills training, pronunciation,

public speaking, English for Health Professionals, and business writing for speakers of other languages and more!

�e New Mainers Resource Center is designed tohelp new Mainers enter the US workforce.

JOB CLASS A �is intensive 130-hour course (8 weeks) is designed for immigrants with low to intermediate English language skills that are searching for their �rst job in the US. Students in ESOL levels 3 and 4 will learn how to search for a job, and expand their English skills through contextual-ized English for the workplace with a focus on U.S. workplace culture and learn �nancial literacy skills. Area employers are actively engaged in the program, visiting the classroom to share information about their companies, providing mock interview practice as well as hiring students. Gradu-ates of the program receive a certi�cate detailing their competency achieved for twelve employability skill standards and their attendance hours. �ey also receive one-on-one job search support from their teachers and job developers from partici-pating service agencies.Instructors: Bridget Kahn, Mora KatzPAE-Cathedral

JOB CLASS B�is 60-hour course is designed for im-migrants with a higher level of English pro-�ciency (ESOL 5 and above) who want to advance their careers. Students will learn to apply their professional, transferable skills to the US workforce. Emphasis is on writing etiquette for the workplace. Stu-dents will prepare a professional portfolio including a resume, cover letter, a sample application form, references and well-crafted introduction. Students will learn �nancial literacy skills and participate in 10 hours of computer lab time focused on job search skills. Instructor: Deborah BreitingPAE-Cathedral

INSUFFICIENT ENROLLMENTPlease be aware that courses which fail to attract su�cient enrollment may be canceled three working days prior to the �rst day of class.

REFUND/TRANSFER POLICIES Registration fees: Course and book fees will be refunded in full if a class is canceled. A $10 fee is withheld if you drop a course at least one business day before the �rst class. A 50% refund will be issued if you drop the course before the second class. No refunds after the second class, for one session classes or transfers once a class has started. Refunds take approximately 3-4 weeks to process. NO SCHOOL POLICYNo programs will be held if Portland Public Schools are canceled or on vacation. When PPS delays the opening of school, PAE classes that start before 11 a.m. will be canceled. Listen to your local radio or TV station for cancellations. When classes are canceled due to inclement weather or illness, it may not be possible to schedule makeups. �ere will be no classes April 17-21, May 29, and July 3-4. Portland Adult Education reserves the right to make changes in starting or ending dates.
