Weathering Oklahoma by Leslie Martin
To the Class of 2017
Congratulations!
We come together on this special day to celebrate the completion of your degree and to welcome you to the professional world. You are entering the Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences at an exciting time. More than ever, the world is in need of the skills that geographers, environmental scientists, geographic information specialists and meteorologists offer. Your degrees have prepared you to advise others on how to use Earth’s natural resources in ways that benefit humankind while minimizing negative impacts on the environment, and how to predict future weather events to assist in saving lives, protecting property and enhancing economic competitiveness. Your studies have provided you with a keen understanding of where humankind fits in the Earth system, preparing you to lead efforts to ensure a sustainable future. As a professional in your chosen discipline, you have a special responsibility to use your knowledge of the Earth wisely and carefully. The award of your degree is the culmination of years of hard work. During those years, it has been the pleasure of the College’s faculty and staff to watch you grow, both as individuals and as aspiring professionals, in our disciplines. In the years to come, remember us. We need your support as loyal alumni to maintain the quality of our programs and to assist the students who will follow you. Just as others have helped you reach this day, you now inherit the responsi-bility for helping students in future years receive a quality education. Again, on behalf of the faculty and staff of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, my heartiest congratulations!

“Weathering Oklahoma” is the work of native Oklahoman Leslie Martin. It is a tribute to the state and its extreme weather. “Weathering Oklahoma” was Martin’s MFA thesis project at the University of New Mexico. Martin cut Oklahoma’s 77 counties out of 20 gauge mild steel. She then traveled across the state, installing each county’s steel shape, fully exposing it to the elements from March – June, 2016. The trip to deliver all 77 pieces took two weeks and covered 3,500 miles. In June, the pieces were mailed back to Martin, who compiled them into an 11’ long, 300 pound map that reflects the impact the weather has on each county and the many variations across the state. “Weathering Oklahoma” will be on display in the National Weather Center Atrium through 2017.
OKLAHOMA
O——-klahoma,
Where the wind comes sweep-in’ down the plain
And the wav-in’ wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
O——-klahoma,
Ev-’ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk
Mak-in’ lazy circles in the sky.
We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say Yeeow!
A yip-I-o-ee-ay!
We’re only sayin’
You’re doing fine, Oklahoma!
Oklahoma, O.K.!

OU CHANT, Live on University
O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A
Our chant rolls on and on.
Thousands strong join heart and song
In Alma Mater’s praise
Of campus beautiful by day and night
Of colors proudly gleaming red and white
‘Neath the western sky
OU’s chant will never die.
Live on, Un-i-ver-si-ty.
