Breastfeeding: simply the best
WHAT IS A BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY CLINIC? The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Clinical Protocol #14 (see link in sidebar) defines a Breastfeeding Friendly Clinic as “a physician’s office that enthusiastically promotes and supports breastfeeding through the combination of a conducive office environment and education of healthcare professionals, office staff, and families.”
Healthcare providers play an important role in breastfeeding initiation and duration. Hospitals become Baby-Friendly by implementing the World Health Organization’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding www.babyfriendlyusa.org.
Breastfeeding Friendly Steps for Clinics (Breastfeeding Friendly Resource for Outpatient Settings – link in sidebar)
1. Establish a written infant feeding policy that promotes, supportsand protects breastfeeding.
2. Provide breastfeeding education for all staff.3. Provide evidence based breastfeeding information prenatally
to all families.4. Provide clinical services that promote and support
breastfeeding as the norm.5. Establish and maintain a breastfeeding friendly clinic
environment.6. Collaborate with local agencies and resources to ensure
continuity of care.7. Provide lactation accommodation for all employees.8. Develop a financial plan to sustain breastfeeding services.9. Establish systems of data tracking and quality evaluation.
